AI GeneratedMontreal secures a victory in the Heritage Classic, driven by a dominant performance from goaltender Jacob Fowler. Despite missing Nick Suzuki, the team relied on its defensive core and Fowler's elite shot-stopping to overcome Winnipeg in a challenging outdoor environment.
We are watching something unbelievably special unfold
in Montreal right now.
I haven't felt this way about a goalie since, well, you know who.
As Montreal wins the Heritage Classic on the back of Jacob Fowler
and the D-Corp chipping
in Lane Hudson with his third of the season,
the first half to 10 points, Caden Guilory
scoring in his second straight game.
But the overall feel was the coaching in this game felt pretty good.
They're 2-0 without Nick Suzuki
and Jacob Fowler continues his dominance as straight
up one of the best goalies in the entire NHL.
and that is not an exaggeration look
at the numbers tonight another full game played it felt
like he should have had the shutout that Rosine goal hey it
was a good shot you know Fowler was
in position even the goals that he does give up
are in position on a one-timer across the ice 2.93
goals saved above expected Winnipeg generated
a ton of chances in this game and it just didn't
matter Jacob Fowler first start of the night moves
to 5-1-0 on the season and he was just saying go
have his go at the end the team put him in a good position
to win he said the conditions were great
it was fun watching this game it was around zero in Winnipeg
so nice and cool out there the ice
wasn't too too bad you can see
the snow building up it felt like it had all the good aspects of
an outdoor game without too many of the drawbacks like
the puck getting stuck this and that you
could tell the players were getting used to it
but it was so fun to watch and there was so much
to dive into but before we even get going i want
to remind you guys we're pushing to 30,000
subscribers we have a big goal to do this by the end
of the year that one free click of subscribe
does a world of wonder for us
and I will get some more into Fowler as the game goes on but I wanted
to show the box score and highlight some
of the players that really did well in tonight's game
Mike Matheson actually leading the Habs in time on ice
and what I find interesting is Caden Guilory
actually came in second Caden Guilory has been on a tear lately
and I don't think we've I'm not sure
if we fix the headshot i think it still might
be Nikita Kucherov however uh Ghouli is in that
picture just on the side this is getting fixed
very soon i promise but another goal back-to-back
games the second most used Montreal Canadian tonight was Cade
and Ghouli 27 shifts and shifts
now you can quote me on that one that if you're doing
that that many times in the game you got
a problem you might have eaten something uh
something bad too much fiber in the diet 23
the three minutes I'm on ice 27 shifts now
the two goals on the season uh he's just been
unbelievable we take a look
at the deep pairings uh you can see Caden Gooley actually was not
statistically the best tonight
but I thought Caden Gooley himself played very well mainly because the
penalty kill was relied upon
so much in this game has power play guess what uh I didn't get to see
it it sucked the penalties were all called against Montreal to be fair
though Winnipeg did play a
clean game they weren't out there being too too
rough could there have been one or two calls
maybe a couple questionable ones on Montreal
also maybe but ended up not costing them taking a look
at the scorecards here you know i talk a lot about Jacob Fowler
who did have the highest game score
i believe uh no actually second
or third highest behind Dobson and Hudson uh higher than any
forward though Caulfield Evans again penalty
killing Merchant maybe uh Kirby Dach Slapkowski
some good stuff from the forwards
that new Hook Anderson Krider line got to figure something out
We'll dive into those numbers later.
But Caden Gooley, very solid game from him.
You know, you can actually see on the ice for goal again.
Anyway, it's a bit weird,
but I thought he was a very important piece tonight.
Not to mention what doesn't get captured
in the stats was saving a wraparound goal
late when Jacob Fowler couldn't control the rebound.
That was Caden Gooley.
So shout out to him.
But we got to talk about the deep pairing of Hudson and Dobson.
It is something that we have seen a whole lot.
Lane Hudson and Noah Dobson,
when they have played together, the numbers have been
absolutely in their favor we've talked about it
in the past the money puck numbers and again
tonight uh you can see they
were our two best players according to game score even higher
than Jacob Ballard and you look at the amount
of shots controlled 74 of the shots 77 of the
unblocked shots that's corsi
and fenwick 83.6 of the expected goals when they were on the ice
together this is a deep pairing
that i think absolutely needs to be used even more we know
already did some weird stuff last game putting Noah Dobson
with Arbor Jack guy tonight it was
Jack guy with Carrier which actually did kind of work
but Lane Hudson 21 minutes one goal plus one
solid like what else do you need from him he's out there
so the first half to 10 points this
year and I'm not sure if his uh player stack
card will have updated let's see actually we can
check this live now still showing nine points
but now up to three goals 10 points in 11 games
he's tracking for a point per game season
and that's just like I I don't I can't believe what
we're seeing from Lane Hudson still you know maybe needs
to get the hits up but the blocks are very
solid he was good and Noah Dobson I mean
as we saw actually we'll replay some of this
replay some Fowler saves but Noah Dobson
with that incredible pass across to Lane Hudson on that goal
it was really really really nice there it is boom look
at that actually on the broadcast they showed
Marty San Luis was saying on the bench in a back post
and then Dobson hit him and it worked and
Dobson himself having three block shots one hit
continuing what's looking to be a career high
year in hits for Noah Dobson kind of transforming
his game we said the points would start coming and
look if he can play with Lane Hudson
on Lane Hudson's natural side the left side Dobson's
natural side the right side two offensive guys
though Dobson does have a bit of that defensive
upside recently I think it could really work well
but obviously the story of this game was Jacob
Fowler but before I talk about him I gotta mention Cole Caulfield
because I thought he had such a
good game easy to slip this under
the radar only 16 minutes time on ice tonight not getting power
play time like he usually would because there was none
but one hit but two assists picking up an
assist on both goals for the Montreal Canadiens
tonight very important but now we got to talk
about our boy Jacob Fowler I mean what
an insane performance how special is this like I gotta show
you something again I feel I'm gonna
do this every time he wins I'm gonna keep sending this out I
said the exact same thing about last game word
for word same thing you guys love it Jacob Fowler
just wins hockey games is it not true is it
not the most true thing you've ever heard not only
does he just win hockey games he's making history
while he's at it he made history as the youngest
goalie in the history of the NHL to start
in an outdoor game 22 years old right is it 23 i always
forget but he was so unbelievable i mean i could pick
a number of tweets and just thoughts all
this kind of stuff but i like this one from Michael Levier Beaudoin
it really is it's very impressive he's very
solid very confident convincing in front of
the zone now you can think of any a lot of great words for Jacob Fowler
and again at his age it is
very impressive to see what he's been doing he controls
the game and that big save on Mark
Scheifele that I'm going to play one more time
this was the turning point I don't care that
Rosins scored shortly after that this right here
and Scheifele just staring like in disbelief
after the game you could see Mark Scheifele go up to Jacob Fowler
and say man that was incredible
Fowler after the game just cool calm collected I have
not seen a goalie this calm in that like I
mean i know it gets said all the time
but like bro like what are we to do this dude's stats are
ridiculous this dude is but like well above
a 900 save percentage well below a two goals against
average like and and i talked we talked yesterday myself
and Jesse about Montembeault probably needing
to be traded a short went out this morning on the same subject
and is it not more obvious than ever
like Jacob Fowler is the future i don't know how much more we need
to see from him to prove that a
.971 save percentage tonight with 34 saves, 25 of 26 saves even straying
but maybe the most
impressive thing nine shots against
when Winnipeg was on a power play and Jacob Fowler saved them
all, not all of them were easy
and like I said earlier, even the shot that did get past him
it was a one-timer across the ice after a defensive scramble
and even then it had to be a pretty good
shot to beat Fowler because I thought he was in pretty good position
so the question really is
what is next for Fowler? Like, well, Fowler
and like this save is insane and just the goaltending
situation in general because Dobesh, to be honest, I wanted
to see Dobesh's mask if you guys saw that
I think anyway it was a beautiful, I think it
was a Dryden tribute anyway it was unreal, uh the
mask that he had, Fowler's was fantastic too, you can take
a look at his, uh, because I love goalie
masks, really really clean, I love these jerseys too
are you guys getting one of these jerseys?
I'm kind of waiting to see what that new kind
of maroon jersey is looking like, if it's a like
Montreal Maroons kind of thing, I want one
of those, I have lots of, I need anyway it doesn't
matter, I'm getting off topic, what is next for Fowler
because as great and as confident as he is
at what point are we saying that this is the number one goalie
in Montreal, has it happened?
and I've been asking
this question after every single Fowler game recently and it feels like
after every game we're getting more
and more people saying you know what yeah yeah he is now
he is now so we gotta ask you guys
is Jacob Fowler officially the number one in your mind
yeah i mean like i think for me it it really comes down to one thing
and one very simple thing
who got the start in this game
when both goalies were fairly well rested it was Fowler that's it
he has been the best goalie he gives this team the best chance to win
and he went out there and not
only proved himself but put on the best performance
by a Habs goalie this year probably I mean 35 or
36 saves is like or 34 35 whatever it was like just
the amount of shots that he had to face in
a tough environment in an outdoor game where
the puck is bouncing like crazy you can't always
control what's going on I think you know even like shutouts he has
a shutout this year but I still
think this game was more impressive
is that a hot take I don't think it is I think Winnipeg had a
lot of good chances so like he was the one that was chosen to start
and he won us the game not
single-handedly but the offense didn't help
do too much zero goals from our forwards mind you
only our defenseman scored and like
and still we managed to come out of this one so i think he
absolutely is leave your thoughts down below
that'll do it we're watching something special
in Montreal and on your way out if you enjoyed even
