The Chinese Communist Party's fifth plenum is underway in Beijing,
but there are many
things happening inside the meeting hall
that the official media will never tell you about.
1. Turnout The number of people attending the meeting
is the lowest ever. By a rough headcount by someone
who is in the meeting, only about 120
Central Committee members were present,
and the 21 Politburo members facing them,
and the combined figure is about 150.
But right now, after deducting those who were expelled or
under investigation,
there should be about 180 members who should attend the meeting.
So where are the other 40 members?
The drop in military uniforms was said to be stand out.
Alternative members also looked thinner, around 140.
If true, that would be the smallest
central committee showing ever reported for a plenum like this.
2. Hu Chunhua Hu Chunhua
is a former Politburo member once
seen as a rising star tied to former CCP leader Hu Jintao.
It is said that Hu Chunhua was chosen
to be Xi Jinping's successor according
to the CCP's tradition of designating successors
one generation in advance.
He already missed a major state event on October 22nd.
According to
someone in the meeting, Hu Chunhua was still not seen at the plenum.
This exclusive information
was obtained by Du Wen,
a former Chinese government legal advisor now overseas.
But one of my own
sources told me that the reason Hu Chunhua missed
that major state event on October 22
was that he was sick
and that he will attend the plenum on the last day. So we can wait
and see what happens three days later.
Number three, strictest security ever.
Reporters and staff had their phones taken. Mobile signal
inside the hall was jammed.
Guards inside the doors were said to be unarmed. Staff could
move only in fixed zones.
Unauthorized movement risked arrest.
Music played, but the mood,
the tip says, was heavy and tense.
Outside the meeting venue, the level of security is also
crazy. According to social media videos from Beijing,
people have to line up for more than
20 minutes just to get onto the subway
because of added security screening.
I think the reasons why this plenum draws
so much attention are the following. First,
Xi Jinping's health is clearly deteriorating rapidly,
yet he has still not designated
a successor. This poses a serious threat
to a smooth transition of China's top leadership
in the future. Second,
Xi Jinping's sweeping purges of the military and government officials
have severely damaged the interests of other powerful CCP elites
and prisoning families.
How much longer will military leaders and other senior CCP
officials tolerate this before they rise up in resistance?
Third, China's economy is also deteriorating rapidly.
Ordinary people at the bottom of society, especially young people
who cannot find jobs, are facing a severe struggle for survival.
The wealthy are facing massive retroactive tax demands
from the CCP, with even assets
already transferred out of China being targeted for taxation.
Meanwhile, the middle class is seeing
its wealth shrink dramatically following the collapse
of the real estate bubble,
with some even facing the risk of falling into poverty.
In other words, life is becoming increasingly difficult for everyone,
from the richest to
the poorest.
How much longer can ordinary Chinese people endure this?
The fact that attendance at the 5th plenum has fallen
to a historic low is itself a reflection
of the unprecedented crisis facing the CCP.
will this crumbling edifice finally collapse?
let's keep watching
