Yeah, that's the story Kelly Rule's working on for us today.
Good afternoon to you.
You're right in front of a truck.
Makes perfect sense.
But did you think when you were coming
to work today that this is the story you'd be on?
I did not.
And if it sounds like it's weird
that they happen kind of back-to-back like this,
police are obviously thinking the same thing.
In fact, they think they could be connected.
So, yeah, you can see there are some tractor-trailers parked back here.
This is the 5200 block of Devereux Avenue.
It's common for them to park back here.
And unfortunately, it's where another one
of these situations happened early this morning.
So police say a driver who was asleep inside
the truck's cab woke up to movement in the truck.
Police say the thieves cut the padlock of the back trailer
and removed five pallets of beef valued at approximately $10,000,
then drove off in several vehicles.
Police say the driver actually captured cell phone video of the cars,
and they're described as a dark gray Nissan sedan
and two dark colored SUVs.
SUVs. And again, this comes after a similar heist
in the city back on Tuesday in the southwest part
of the city. According to police in that case,
again, around 3:30 in the morning on the 3400
block of Island Avenue, which is also a remote area,
police say the driver pulled over to sleep
before the scheduled drop off and woke up to six men wearing masks,
stealing the cases of snow crab
out of the back of his trailer.
One of the men actually chased him down the street. They then
drove off in multiple vehicles
and police say they were a gray Ford 150 pickup truck and a
gray Dodge Caravan. Here's what the captain
and Northeast detectives had to say about this latest
case. It's likely the same crew.
We haven't made the connection yet definitively, but it's likely
the same crew just based on the M.O. and we've had
these crime problems and made arrests before.
Drivers have been assaulted at previous cargo thefts,
nothing recently. I'm talking two or
three years ago where they got too close to the suspects
and they were physically assaulted.
But thankfully, no one was injured,
and this didn't happen in this instance.
And again, fortunately, in this case
this morning and earlier this week,
the drivers were not hurt, but obviously
the concern is that this could escalate.
So police, they are amping up patrols in the area.
They're in touch with patrols,
and they're working with Southwest detectives as well
to see if these cases are linked at all.
We did actually speak with the driver of the tractor trailer behind me.
He was not aware of this, and he was
asking if he should move his truck.
So it sounds like this is something
that drivers are going to be talking about,
maybe questioning where they're parking overnight.
$10,000 of meat. Who are they selling it to?
That's what I want. Where's it going? Yeah.
So we asked that today and that's going to be a big
part of this investigation as well.
It's not only about, you know, getting the crews that are
involved in and actually taking these items,
but then where is it going to? And the captain said
today that, you know, those could be conspiracy charges coming
for whoever is buying it or whoever
is, you know, receiving these stolen items. Yeah.
I mean, it's like when they steal copper and then
they sell it to these, but that's scrapyards buying it.
In this case, who is it? This is
not a rare crime. This is not a medium rare crime.
This is a, the stakes are high. Just
so you know, Kelly, it isn't even his original material.
They've been feeding it to him in
his ear. Prime suspects. I heard it all morning.
I'm tired. That's enough. Yeah. The meat of
the story here. All right. She's busy.
We'll see you later on. Thank you, Kelly.
