Western Massachusetts experienced sunny weather and temperatures around 70 degrees Thursday, marking a sharp contrast to a historic weather event from 15 years ago.
It was another bright and mild fall day today,
but 22 News Storm Team Meteorologist Adam Strzempko is working
for you with how the weather was very different 15 years ago today.
Well, Claire, today it was sunny and temperatures up around 70 degrees,
but back in 2011 on this date, we were dealing with a snowstorm.
We've been enjoying some bright and mild weather this fall.
And while temperatures have been running above average and it has
been pretty dry, that was not the case 15 years ago on October 29th.
We continue to have this very heavy wet snow coming down
and we continue to see numerous power
outages all across western Massachusetts.
If you're watching us and you have power, you're one of the lucky ones.
It was one of the most memorable snowstorms
to ever hit western Massachusetts. Many cities
and towns picked up more than a foot of very heavy wet snow.
The storm was forecast to start as rain and change over to snow,
but most places saw it start right as snow.
This is pretty incredible. This is pretty unprecedented
to dealing with an October snowstorm, Brian.
Yeah, here we are, 327 p.m. on October 29th,
and you can see snow-covered roads there in Greenfield.
It was late October, but most of the trees
in the lower Pioneer Valley still had leaves.
Trees were down everywhere,
and many cities and towns were left without power
for several days to as long as a week.
And 2011 was the year that saw a number of very memorable weather
events here in western Massachusetts, including the June 1st tornado,
Tropical Storm Irene, and the October snowstorm.
Working for you, I'm 22 News Storm Team Meteorologist Adam Stremko.
