It happened in the overnight hours.
In the course of about 20 minutes, these hackers essentially
emptied these digital or so-called hot wallets
of $6.3 billion U.S. in cryptocurrency. Analysts
pinning this heist on North Korean hackers.
We heard from co-CEO Richard Tang on social media
saying they thought this was just one compromised laptop,
but now they say they've uncovered
covered additional points of breach.
This was a complex attack, he says.
and we are doing all we can in coordination
with law enforcement to resolve it.
We are still gathering the facts
and will share more directly as we have them.
But they say they've managed to freeze about $3 billion of this money,
but the other $3.3 billion U.S.
No word on where that is.
And no word on where it may have gone, I assume?
Yeah, so they're trying to track this money
because they believe that the hackers
are potentially trying to move these funds
across multiple blockchains
in an attempt to launder some of this money.
All of these analysts attributing the heist
to this North Korean elite hacking unit,
the same one they say was involved in the FBI
named $1.5 billion US Bybit hack in 2024.
The FBI and the UN say they've connected Pyongyang-linked hackers
to billions of dollars in crypto hacks over the last several years,
alleging cyber units being used for espionage and revenue.
What is the company saying to people whose faith might
be shaken right now when it comes to digital assets?
Yeah, so they're saying they're doing everything that they can to...
Basically, find as much of this money.
They've stopped withdrawals at this point,
assuring investors their money is safe.
They say that they have a reserve fund of at least $1 billion
and company revenue will cover the rest of it.
But cryptocurrency prices fell on the news.
Bitcoin down nearly 2%.
This breach is going to make people
a little wary about maybe using crypto.
