Crowds of trick-or-treaters headed
to the Elmwood East Kildonan Senior Centre for a safe Halloween.
The event was put on by the Chalmers Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation,
and organizers say part of the reason they
do it is to connect with community.
This is the fourth year it's happened.
Typically, hundreds of kids come.
They moved it inside this time around to make sure all the ghosts
and goblins stay warm.
And because the senior centre is beside Lord Selkirk School,
it's easy for students to swing by for some sugar after class.
Executive Director Lalani Valarba says it's only grown
in popularity with parents over the years.
They absolutely love that we have a safe Halloween
and we get a lot of donations
and a lot of neighbours, they come down and they bring their candy.
So that we could give the candy out here.
They absolutely love the things
that bring people together in this community.
Valarba says the safety of kids
on Halloween has been an increasing concern.
And the group wanted families to know they
are a safe option for people to come get treats.
She says Elmwood is a comfortable neighbourhood,
but parents in recent years are being more cautious.
And with Halloween typically a big night for kids, she doesn't want
the communal experience of trick-or-treating to be lost.
But beyond the candy, Valarba says the night is about showing parents
the different resources and services her group offers.
She says the Chalmers organization is here to help however it can.
