Tomorrow marks one year since a confrontation between ICE agents
and residents in Evanston.
This is video from last Halloween.
Agents were seen beating a US citizen after a crash.
Joining us now, we have Jacqueline Mendoza,
a member of Sanctuary Evanston.
Thank you so much for joining us tonight.
You're welcome.
So what do you want people to understand
about what happened here one year ago?
What I want people to know is that what happened was not okay.
And it should have never been allowed to happen,
not by this administration and not by anybody.
The trauma that has been caused here is gonna take
a long time to get out of our children.
But at the same time, our community stays together,
and our community continues to protect each other.
So we just showed some of that video of the violence.
What questions do you think should
be answered here about the use of force?
And what accountability are you looking for from federal agencies?
We are looking for these federal agents to be prosecuted.
The way that they are acting is not okay. It's not legal.
You should not be able to just see somebody
and discriminate against the way they look,
the way they love, or where they come from.
These people need to be prosecuted. They are not agents.
They are just rogue people with a badge
who are cowards and who are afraid to show their faces
because they know that what they are doing is not good.
And it is against the law.
DHS says that agents were being followed,
that their vehicle was hit, and that people
then surrounded, verbally confronted, and spit on agents.
What is your response to that account?
They cause those accidents.
They do it all the time.
They want to provoke an accident so they have an excuse to hurt people,
to detain people.
We see it all the time.
They take US citizens to jail,
they take US citizens and charge them.
They wanna charge people for something that never happened.
And they are proven wrong
in the American courts of law every single day.
They have no case against anybody
because you see anybody in jail from Evanston you don't.
Cuz nobody did anything wrong here.
They are the criminals.
We gotta leave it right there.
But thank you so much for joining us tonight.
We really appreciate your time.
All right, take care.
