Africa is about to host its first ever Olympic sporting event.
Dakar Senegal will host the fourth edition
of the Summer Youth Olympic Games running from
October 31st to November 13th.
The games feature 25 different sports, many of which are Olympic
core sports like swimming, athletics,
gymnastics, beach volleyball and rugby.
But some new additions include futsal, Baseball5,
Wushu, commonly known as Kung Fu, integrates concepts from traditional
wushu, beach wrestling and beach handball.
and modern Chinese martial arts.
Canada's flag bearer Miranda Wei is one of the world's best
in the sport. I would describe Wushu because it's very complex.
It's split into something called
Sanda, which is more hands-on and fighting,
and then there's also Taolu, which is choreographed
routines. It's similar to gymnastics and acrobatics,
as well as something similar to dance as well.
The Games feature about 2,700 athletes competing in 153 medal events,
and some notable competitors have gone
on to do big things on the Olympic stage.
South African swimmer Chad Le Clos featured
at the inaugural edition in Singapore
and became an Olympic champ two years later at London 2012.
American sprinter Noah Lyles won 200-meter gold in Nanjing
and went on to become the Olympic
100-meter champ at Paris 2024.
And Canadian short track speed skater Florence Brunel was a bronze
medalist at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games
and just this year won silver and bronze at the
Milano Cortina Olympics. Since this is the first time
the Olympic rings will be raised in Africa,
the Games are seen as a celebration of Senegalese and African culture.
The mascot, Ayo, is a young lion who is said to roar for joy.
Even the medals feature the roar of youth,
with a lion on one side and a baobab tree on the other,
representing Africa's heritage, resilience, and longevity.
