James Kaufman, World News Report Today.
Can you tell me what's wrong with this sunspot?
It has a twisted magnetic field.
Active sunspot 4274 is emitting almost daily
coronal mass ejections and strong solar flares.
The reason why may be found in this magnetic map
from NASA's Solar Dynamic Observatory.
Note the distribution of pluses and minuses.
These are the sunspot's magnetic poles,
and they are arranged in a very unusual way.
According to Hale's Law,
the sunspot's magnetic poles should be oriented negative-positive,
that is, negative on the left and positive on the right of the sunspot.
Instead, they are twisted 90 degrees, with positive on the top
of the sunspot and negative on the bottom of the sunspot.
Sunspot 4274 is breaking Hale's Law.
The twisted magnetic roots of this sunspot are torqued
and full of tension.
Strong flares are how it tries to relax.
NOAA has forecasted that there is an 80% chance
of having an M-class solar flare today
and a 35% chance of having a powerful X-class solar flare.
Yes, today, November 7th, we'll have to see what happens,
folks, but this was one of my watch days
for the month. This is not the first time we've seen Hale's Law broken,
but we haven't seen it
very often. Please give us a thumbs up,
share, subscribe, and always remember,
anything's possible, Bizarro World.
