Welcome
to the
show
everybody,
Hope
y'all
have
tricked
and
treated
and all
that
stuff.
Welcome, that's right.
And because we wanna make it into the Jimmy Kimmel montage,
can you believe it's November?
No, no.
Thanks audience. I appreciate that. First up today,
you may have heard me say that it's my dream to be the official voice
of our airport here where our show is based MSP.
I want to be the voice that goes,
you're now approaching concourse C. That's a dream.
I know it's a dumb dream, but I want to do it anyway.
Well, for one person in Boston,
that dream will become a reality this week.
Listen to this.
Boston Logan Airport held a contest.
Look at this.
to find the voice of Logan.
And someone from Boston, yeah,
someone from Boston with that familiar accent we all know.
That's what they want.
They want a Bostonian accent.
Like, hardcore, yeah.
Yeah, voting just ended. Check out audience.
Check out some of the finalists.
Welcome to Boston Logan International Airport.
Front door to the capital of heart, hustle, and hometown pride.
This city runs on iced coffee, raw ambition,
and unbeatable team spirit. So let's go.
Whether you're grabbing a lobster roll by the harbor.
Waiting in line for cannoli in the north end.
Great idea.
That's a great idea, actually.
That is totally.
We could never do it at MSP
because it would be everyone would sound like Fargo.
Oh, boy, we're here.
That's right.
Get off here for some bars.
Yeah.
Get a stop for some bags over there.
The winner.
That's right.
Get a bag.
Get a bag.
Get a bag.
You can shop for a bag over here.
The winner, by the way, will be announced on Thursday,
and they will be the one welcoming travelers to the airport.
She is a welcome sight every day here.
Give it up for Falun.
Leo was a little late on that.
I think he's still drinking the slushies.
That's right.
Director Leo was drinking the slushies over there.
You actually had, Leo and I were texting this weekend
because you had these pickles that everyone was obsessed with.
And I made Leo do the QR code on the side of them
and then text me the link to buy them.
Yeah, there are...
Is the set falling apart? The set is actually falling apart.
Let's take a shot of this.
There's Carter. The set is literally falling apart as we do the show.
Look at that.
Yeah.
Carter, get the glue.
Get the Elmer's over there.
Lord have mercy.
Anyway.
No, yeah.
I threw, as I said in the cold open,
I threw a, I don't want to call it a party.
Colin and I literally planned this.
14 hours ago, it was a last, it was a last, it was a lot of ooze today.
It was a last minute thing, a last minute kind of shindig.
We just was like, I started with Jeff, I go,
Jeff, what are you doing on Halloween?
He goes, nothing.
I go, you want to come over?
And then it just snowballed and then you're like, I'll stop by.
Listen, no, if you have
a slushy machine making boozy cocktails, it's a party.
It's like, it just is by default.
Yeah, because I had, yeah.
I had my friend Morgan, our friend Morgan had this,
the Ninja Slushy, not to be confused with the creamy that you hate,
but I have the Ninja Slushy and I have
a double barrel one where you can make a twisty, twisty drinks.
Yeah.
So I bring that up because the three stars of my get-together,
and we'll get to the third one in a minute, audience.
The first one is the slushie we made.
Thank you very much.
Erin, you would have loved this.
Erin couldn't come.
We had frozen cosmopolitans and a frozen espresso martini.
So those were the stars.
And then pickles.
We had pickles.
Stephanie Hansen brought pickles.
Yeah.
And then Colin got some from a server
at a restaurant around here called Pittsburgh Blue.
And then the pickles that won everybody's heart.
The blue ribbon pickles.
The blue ribbon pickles, audience.
Now here, I'm going to mention this.
And every time I do, she gets inundated with orders.
There's a woman named Michelle.
Who lives here in Minnesota,
and she makes these pickles called fire and ice pickles.
And I think if you Google them, Leo found the link.
If you Google fire and ice pickles, she ships,
I don't know if she ships all around the country,
but no joke, we've had her on the show.
They start one flavor, and then they change flavors in your mouth,
and they end with like a spicy finish.
Am I right?
No, they were so good, and they weren't.
Too spicy?
I think they might have killed Bjorn a little bit,
but Bjorn hates spice, but I loved them.
There was a QR code on the side,
so I made Leo QR code it and then text me the link so
I can buy them because they were that good.
They're really good.
Again, she developed this recipe, and yeah, fire and ice.
I mean, sweet, sweet woman, Michelle.
We had her on the show like six years ago.
She ended up starting a business because she got
so many calls after she appeared on our
show, which is great.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay, so you heard my list of things.
The star of the show, forget us, we didn't care.
It was the pickles, the slushy machine,
and then finally, you may have heard me say
that photographer Eric, now bless his little heart,
photographer Eric, how do I say this, is special.
Uh, uh...
Eric is one of my best friends, and he's so loving,
but he's just...
He's special, and he bought all of this equipment to make thunder
and lightning and fog.
He bought a machine that does fog effects for Broadway.
Now, yeah, and then he made,
then he created this thunder and lightning machine, and he
went to his wife, and this is how it went,
he went to his wife, Tanya, and he goes, honey,
can I set this up at our house?
And Tanya said, and insert your favorite cuss word,
she said, blank, blank, blank, no, go
do it at Jason's house.
So, so yeah, so I asked permission from Colin,
I said, Colin, Eric wants to come over and
set this up.
This is no joke.
It took Eric.
Two days at my house,
an audience, we rolled video,
look at this,
this is my house, so
voice changer, that's my radio executive producer Holly
on the mic as we were recording
this, Holly, who by the way is in the audience today,
Holly, so as kids were coming up,
As kids were coming up my sidewalk,
Holly was freaking them out and judging their costumes.
It was hysterical. It was fantastic. Yeah.
I was going to ask what was Holly's demonic
inspiration with that sound. That was so scary.
I love it. Well on the show, Holly does a great,
she has this, she does a Satan's voice sometimes and it's fantastic.
So it was, yeah, it was perfect. It was perfect.
But oh my gosh. So that was going on all night.
Well, it spread around our neighborhood that this was going on.
So people were starting to drive around just to look at it.
You pulled in. You came to the part of the shindig a little late. Yeah.
What did you say?
Did you see it coming down the road?
Yeah, I saw the lightning before I saw your house down the street.
And I was like, oh, yeah, Eric had been here.
And then he waited until I was, like,
close to the door and then started doing, like, murder screams.
And I was like, what?
But, wait, share what that kid said to you that came to the door.
Oh, audience.
So, my last trick-or-treater, which, by the way,
I had realized I'd never done trick-or-treating, really.
We didn't do it last year.
We've been in this house now two years.
This kid audience, if he, if his friends are,
if his family's watching, you have like
the coolest, cutest kid.
He was about maybe 10 or 11.
Thank you.
He was a brunette and he came to the door by himself.
I forgot.
Oh, he was an ant.
Cause he had a big butt.
He had a big like ant butt,
but he knocks the door and I opened the door.
And before he said anything, he didn't say trick or treat.
He goes, this is literally how we talked.
He was like a little 30 year old and a 10 year old body.
You have scared me.
You have scared me, but it is the good scare.
And he goes, I enjoy your setup.
And I was like, what is this, little man?
And then I said, I go, and then he goes, trick or treat.
And I went, okay, would you like chocolate or nerds?
And he goes, I would like a selection of both.
And I said, I go, you can actually have my house.
Just because I love you and you're the best kid ever.
Yeah, so anyway.
It was a hoot and a holler.
The neighbors came over.
Really quick, Jeff.
So this is the end of the story.
Keep in mind, audience, our party ended around midnight.
My neighbor, all my neighbors came over,
especially my neighbor, Amy, who lives across the street.
Amy lives directly across.
Keep in mind, audience, my party ended.
We went to bed around 11:30.
Colin and I woke up the next day,
and we started decorating for Christmas.
So, Amy, around 6 o'clock,
when we ignited our Christmas trees, we have two,
Amy's in her front yard, and I look at my phone,
and I get a text from Amy,
and she goes, Merry Christmas?
And I walk out, and she goes, it's just at your house 14 hours ago,
and it was Halloween, and she goes,
and I go, the gays worked very fast.
We transitioned very fast.
I'll show you my Christmas later.
We're going to take a break.
The hot dish will be returned back in a moment, everybody.
Hot topics and entertainment in the Hot Dish.
Coming up next, Martha, what are you doing?
Find out why Martha Stewart's Halloween costume has led
to a disastrous apology.
Then, the Jason Show Watch Club,
I'm checking out the season premiere of The Gilded Age.
And, is daylight saving time already wreaking havoc on your sleep?
Don't worry, our sleep expert is here with great tips to help you.
The Jason Show, we'll be right back.
It is time
for the hottest
hot topics
in the world.
It's time for the hot dish.
Roll it, Leo.
Here we go.
Okay, first up, it seems to happen almost every Halloween.
A celebrity costume leads to big old controversy.
This year, people are asking the question,
Martha Stewart, what were you thinking?
Martha shared this picture on Saturday.
Showing her dressed like a homeless woman in tattered clothing
and a dirty face.
And she's holding a sign that says, I am hungry, help me.
The backlash was immediate.
I mean, yeah, unhoused people, not a costume, Martha.
Anyway, many are calling her out for making fun of people
who are actually struggling,
which Martha is not one of those people.
Martha deleted the picture and said she was,
and this is another example of a celebrity,
Making it worse with their apology,
Martha did two other posts and she said in one of
them, she was trying to bring more awareness
to the serious subject of homelessness.
No, she wasn't.
No, she wasn't.
But people didn't buy it.
We're not buying it.
And I love Martha.
I'm a fan of Martha.
But Martha, you made it.
You made it worse with that because that's not what you were doing.
And you know that you've done a lot of good in this arena.
You don't need to wear a costume to do more good.
You've done it.
You don't need to lie about it.
Yesterday, yesterday,
Martha shared a more direct apology because the first one sucked,
saying it's hard to admit when you've really screwed up.
My earlier statement didn't go far enough.
I know many people are suffering economically.
Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny.
And I'm very sorry.
I mean.
That should have been her first post.
That should have been the first post.
Yeah, I mean, it's always just so surprising to me in 2026
when you have so many people around you,
how a single person did not point out how bad
of an idea it was for her to have that as her call.
Even if it was like a secret party where
no cameras and phones were allowed,
why wouldn't someone say don't do this on her team
or a friend and then to post it
and then to double down and say you're raising awareness?
Where?
Where was it in the caption, a link to help a charity?
Where was the QR code, Martha?
It's just like, so, but funny enough,
I went to the comments and a lot of the comments
actually were like, dude, she's like 80 something, give her a break.
Like I, you know what?
Like Martha made a mistake, move on.
A lot of the comments were really defensive of Martha.
I know a lot of 80 year olds who would never do that.
Yeah.
I don't know a lot of 80 year olds, I'm just saying, yeah.
I could, yeah, yeah.
Now on to some less offensive celebrity costumes.
Heidi Klum always goes over the top.
Yeah.
This year she dressed as her severed hand.
Heidi was celebrating the 25th anniversary of her Halloween party.
Okay.
How did she go to the bathroom in that?
I know.
Where's the zipper?
Anyway, she arrived in the back of a U-Haul,
as one does when you're a severed hand.
Yeah.
Okay.
Next, you've got to see Lisa Rinna.
She dressed as Kylie Jenner.
It's crazy.
She does.
Audience.
Audience, come to the TV.
That is not Kylie Jenner.
That is Lisa Rinna.
Oh, my God.
It's so good.
Rinna Falun.
It's so good.
It looks just like her.
Whoever did her makeup, it's, like, perfect.
Yeah, Rinna, I got to tell you,
you drove me crazy in the last years of Beverly Hills,
but I think it was a very smart move to leave
because she is bigger than ever.
Bravo to Rinna.
Yeah, speaking of Rinna, our friend.
Now watch this.
Speaking of Rinna, our friend and former Traders alum,
Carolyn, dressed as Lisa Rinna from
the Traders.
Look at this.
That's so good.
Lisa, yeah, again, Carolyn is to the left, Rinna is to the right.
Yeah, she is spot on.
Lisa herself commented saying her husband,
Harry Hamlin, thought it was the real Lisa.
Harry Hamlin thought it was his wife.
Also, Carolyn, that hair looks really good on you.
That looks really good on her.
Yeah, Carolyn, if you're watching, I know you watch.
Keep that hair, girl.
That looks really good.
Okay.
We haven't even showed you the best because Jeff
and I think we have nominated Kiki Palmer.
Forget Heidi Klum, whatever in your hand.
Kiki Palmer may have won Halloween with her costume
and she teamed up with her son to
recreate an iconic music video.
That is Kiki and Leo recreating the Janet
and Michael Jackson video for Scream.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha!
Oh, my gosh.
If you watch, if you're a youngin and you've never seen that video,
go watch it right now
and then you'll pass out because that's an exact replica.
I'm also just going to go listen to that song
when I leave in general because it's just
such a good song, too.
It's such a good song.
Oh, I love it.
It's such a good song.
Next up, with Halloween over, Mariah Carey is prepared.
Of course.
Just like the Mathesons, Mariah shared her latest video
getting ready for the holidays, showing a new side.
Yes, it's time for Mariah to make another $12.5 million.
That's right.
It's become an annual tradition for Mariah to remind everyone
it's time to start listening to her song,
All I Want for Christmas is You.
This year, goth Mariah started by performing a song cut
from an earlier album and then, of course,
And of course, transitioning into her
Very unpopular song.
Yeah, last year the song became the single
with the most weeks at number one
in the history of Billboard.
In the history of Billboard.
Unfortunately now Ella Langley has dethroned her, right?
Consecutive weeks?
Oh, consecutive, yeah.
But still, come on, man.
I know.
She's, I mean, as we're talking about it,
she made a million dollars off that song, yeah.
Also, who's still listening to Christmas music, like, after?
Because that's like, what, it had to be like 24 weeks or something.
What's going on, guys?
I know people that listen after.
In the minute Christmas is over,
I get rid of, like, I want everything done.
Yes, absolutely.
Next in the dish, it was a great weekend for TV,
thanks to two of my favorite shows returning for a new season.
But let's start with season four of The Gilded Age,
which premiered on HBO last night.
Now, if you watched, now, before I get into my review, this popped too.
If you watched the premiere last night on HBO,
you may have noticed some familiar extras in the background of a scene.
Check this out. Look.
It's David Letterman and Matt Damon.
They were spotted in a scene about eight minutes into the episode,
and all they did was glide from stage to screen, left to screen, right.
And I told Jeff this morning, Falun, I watched it last night.
I was a little sleepy.
I was very tired decorating.
But I was watching it, and I went like this.
I went, I didn't say it to Colin.
I went.
Was that Matt Damon?
But I thought I was drunk.
You know what I mean?
I thought I was sleepy.
I watched it last night and didn't even remotely spot those two.
It didn't even remotely.
Like, I had no idea.
Yeah, they just walk across the street and it was like that.
If you wouldn't have been looking or if you're
on your phone, you would have missed it.
Also, David Letterman's taller than I realized.
In that photo, he looks taller than Matt Damon.
Yeah, Letterman's pretty tall.
I had no idea.
Yeah, Letterman's pretty tall.
Okay, so back to the actual review of the Gilded Age.
After last year's incredible Season 3,
where the ratings jumped, the quality jumped,
they just got their mojo for the show.
I was really looking forward to Season 4.
And look, I don't ever judge a premiere by, you know,
I don't judge a whole season by the premiere.
But if the premiere is any indication,
they have laid the groundwork for some...
A lot of juiciness in season four.
Well, yeah, I was going to say, I actually was impressed.
They came out of the gate with like a lot
of big moments in the very first episode.
There was a screaming woman giving birth.
You know, I mean, yeah, she was like.
As you do.
As you do, yeah.
When the doctor won't let her have a little bit of nature's medicine
or whatever she was trying to be given.
Like, don't give her morphine.
It's bad for the baby.
I'm like, but the mom needs a little bit.
I'm just kidding.
Too far.
I'm just kidding.
Yeah.
No, but yeah, it was like that happened.
And then it went to a couple getting married.
And I'm like, holy crap.
I mean, I'm so glad you pointed that out.
They wasted no time getting into it.
Yeah.
There was a wedding and then a birth
and then a hookup that you didn't expect.
And then something.
Someone was mad about the hookup,
and then there was like a wardrobe change, and yeah,
it was, it was, and then Felicia Rashad was getting bitchy,
I mean, it was fantastic.
This is Bravo, you guys have found your groove,
I'm so happy for you, yeah.
Jake's one review, he's like, you need more butt fluff stuff.
Because all the women wear the big fluffy butt dresses.
He's like, you've got to bring that back.
And I was like, I'm good.
We could do Gilded Age next year for Halloween.
That would be good, yeah.
Sounds expensive.
It does sound expensive, yeah.
We don't have Heidi Klum money around here.
Next, season two of Dexter Resurrection started streaming on Friday.
You guys know I love Dexter.
Dexter's son, Harrison, is now a police officer,
while Dexter has to deal with a pair
Of new serial killers terrorizing New York City.
Okay, similar to what my bestie Falun said about Gilded Age.
I will not ruin this for you, audience.
I'm just going to give you brush strokes of how I feel.
You all know that I think one through four seasons
of the original Dexter
are some of the best television in the last 25 years.
I really wondered, did we need Resurrection?
Did we need this show?
Is it necessary?
I am happy to tell you yes, because the show,
the creator, Clyde Phillips, is back.
One of the best producers of the show is back.
An audience, Michael C. Hall, looks like he is having
the time of his life, which us, as an audience...
It makes us enjoy this.
And if you watch the original Dexter,
you know that the setting of Miami was another character.
Miami was a character on the show.
And I always thought to myself,
wow, putting Dexter Morgan in New York,
how is that going to be?
Let me tell you, it's a lot of fun.
It is a lot of fun.
And the last thing I'll leave you,
and this is where they add comedy,
but it also adds some realism to it.
Dexter's older. Dexter's older and he's still killing people.
So what happens when you're in your 50s and you're killing people?
You got the carpal tunnel. You know what I mean?
You got the plantar fasciitis. He needs new glasses.
Tennis elbow. You know what I mean? So relatable.
It's so good.
And real quick, Brian Cox from Succession plays a serial killer.
Okay.
And Dan Stevens from Downton Abbey plays a serial killer.
So good.
It is so good.
Watch Dexter, all of them, on Paramount Plus,
plus Showtime, minus Cinemax, whatever.
Anyway, we'll be right back.
Back in a moment, everybody.
Oh, it's so good.
Only one episode out.
I love this audience today.
For a rainy day, they're kicking butt.
Anyway, yeah.
More this now.
Saturday Night Live returned this weekend
and welcomed back a fan favorite.
Tompkins, the character he first played 10 years ago,
which no one expected to be a hit, but people love him.
I have to admit, I don't get it.
Yeah, I guess I'd have to go back and watch the original.
Yeah, I mean, even when it first came, I'm like, okay.
Anyway, you know what's on fire, though?
SNL UK.
Do not sleep on SNL UK.
They've been knocking it out of the park.
They also got in the Halloween spirit,
You're, uh-huh.
Putting a new spin.
On a scary movie classic.
There's something out there.
No matter how well you hide.
You better
share
in the woods.
She's a triple threat.
That's
right.
That's right. It's the Share Witch Project.
Not to be confused with the Blair Witch Project.
Yeah. Oh, and last week they did a takeoff of Wicked.
You've got to see it go anyway. It's UK, you guys, and season two.
Well, back on the U.S. version, they did
a great pre-taped bit about a new class coming to Delta Airlines.
Introducing Delta Disruptive, a new section of the plane,
exclusively for crazy people.
You see, Delta didn't want to deal
with the constant problems these passengers create,
but we still wanted their money.
So whether you're a basic inconsiderate
or a paranoid lunatic who tries to open the door mid-flight.
This plane is made out of Israel. Delta Disruptive is for you.
So good.
Okay, now I'm going to glide into this next story
because we will talk about it all.
Because speaking of bad plane behavior, you have got to see this.
And you know stuff like, I got this, so many people,
so many of you sent this to me because you know this drives me crazy.
Singer and social media star, Jessie James Decker,
shared something that happened to her on a recent flight.
Watch this.
Yeah.
That is someone's nasty,
barefoot foot on her armrest.
In the caption, she asked, what would you have done?
That is what I would have done.
And can I tell you?
Who raised you?
Who would ever think that first of all,
taking off your shoe, then taking off your sock and
then sticking your foot into the armrest of the person in front of you.
And our buddy Colleen on the radio show looked at the comments
and somebody in the comments
had the audacity to say, well, I mean,
what if whatever she sprayed on the foot, what
if that person was allergic to that?
Let me tell you.
I don't care.
I don't care if that person's foot had
the reaction of holy water on a demon.
You know what I mean?
Thank you, Dean.
I don't care.
You deserve the rash that you would get
if you are allergic to whatever.
However, that...
That animal should be on a no-fly list.
It was a very, that's an interesting choice to be that confident,
to stick your foot through like that.
Confident?
Well, yeah, but you, like, I don't, it's just so.
unique to me. I just can't imagine.
I just, because you were raised right. I was raised
right. Dar would slap the crap out of me.
My mother, I'm 52 and my mother would slap
me still if I did that. But you know what?
I just, I'm using this as a reason. We have
just, we have lost our mind.
We have just, we do not know how to behave in public anymore.
We do not. I will say I bet that's fake, but you think it's fake?
Yeah, that's like all of her videos are like that,
like the couple-y kind of fakey bit.
Really?
Frank video.
So that foot looked like her husband's.
I don't know.
Was he sitting behind her and did it for the bit?
Probably.
I don't think it's real.
I just feel like, yeah.
Okay, but still, if that had happened,
I hope your foot falls off,
just falls off right there.
If it's real, yeah.
If it's real.
For sure.
Also, to the woman at the HomeGoods
that brought her Lhasa Apso into the HomeGoods yesterday,
keep that dog at home.
What?
Yeah.
I am so sick of people bringing in pets.
In places where those pets do not need to be.
The dogs don't want to be at HomeGoods.
They want to be at home.
I almost stepped on a Lhasa Apso.
So keep it at home because you're ruining it
for people that really need the therapy dogs.
It's not a status symbol.
A dog is not a status symbol.
Keep your dogs at home.
Don't bring them to Chick-fil-A.
Don't bring them to HomeGoods.
I don't want to see your Shih Tzu in aisle five.
I'm sick of it.
Woo!
I almost tripped over the dog.
All I wanted was some plaid from my Ralph Lauren Christmas bin.
I was grabbing some plaid, and I almost tripped over the Lhasa Apso.
Maybe the Lhasa Apso wanted a scented candle.
He loves balsam fir.
I don't know.
I'm just throwing it out there, you know?
Keep your dogs at home.
All right.
We'll be right back.
Welcome
back,
everyone.
Many of us were thrilled this weekend to get
an extra hour of sleep on Sunday morning.
That's right.
That's right.
Especially the attendees of our Halloween slushy party.
That's right.
I'm like, dang.
Truth.
Daylight saving time came to an end.
But even an hour's change
on the clock can throw off your sleep schedule.
Here with ways that we can all improve our sleep,
give it up for our sleep expert, Sarah Moe, everybody.
Hi, Sarah.
Okay.
Okay.
So let's just start there.
It is just an hour and fundamentally you would think, oh,
we're getting an extra hour so this won't cause any problems.
But that's not necessarily true. It's not.
So what we see is that people get very excited about
the extra hour that they're going to have and take.
Too much advantage of it,
meaning we actually lose sleep in this daylight savings.
We do.
Think about, okay, oh, I'll watch a movie.
We have a free hour.
Great.
Let's watch a movie.
And that movie turns into two and a half hours,
and we're finding people going to bed past
midnight, having to wake up at the same time.
We actually lose sleep instead of gaining this hour
because of our excitement for it.
So it is really unfortunate that we're seeing
no matter what daylight savings it is, if
it's falling back or springing forward, people are losing sleep.
So a good strategy, well, I should ask you,
how should we handle that extra hour?
We should handle it by ignoring it.
Next year, when you go into this fallback
and you're going to gain this hour, just pretend
it's not really a thing, because
the best case scenario is that you're going to be able
to sleep a little bit later.
You wake up and say, oh, great, I've got,
oh, it's only seven instead of eight.
Wonderful.
But don't change anything,
because we do try to take advantage of it, and we do end up
losing our sleep.
Okay, is it, now, because we're getting less sunlight,
is it best, should we take advantage of the morning sunlight?
Like, how can, what are some ways to upend it a little bit for us?
Yeah, that's a great question.
So, seasonal affective disorder is real.
When you hear about SAD,
it is actually a very significant hormonal change
that happens to us in the Midwest because of the lack of sunlight.
Sunlight creates serotonin in our guts, which is a happy hormone.
It makes us feel good. It makes us feel calm.
And serotonin is converted to melatonin through darkness.
So, if we're not getting a lot of serotonin
because we're not getting a lot of sunlight exposure,
we're not feeling that happiness and that calm,
we're also not having very strong sleep signals
to help us sleep very well.
Well, so we have a bad night of sleep.
We wake up.
We're not getting cranky. We're not getting sunlight.
We're kind of moody and it's a very vicious cycle.
So any sunlight that we can get,
especially right now as we're heading into winter, absolutely grab it.
Get outside in those early morning hours.
If you can get a little extra 15 minute walk
or even look into those sad lamps that they have on sale.
Those can be really helpful as well. Just getting outdoors.
I was watching one of, I forgot what episode it was,
but it was an Oprah podcast episode with an expert like yourself
that was talking about just the importance even in
fall and winter of getting out
Side, just being in nature does actually,
even if it's 20 minutes, helps you rest.
Yes, the 15 to 20 minutes of outdoor exposure is huge.
It's not just sunlight, it's even just trees.
They're finding that the trees are emitting things
that chemically change you on a cellular level
that not only change your mood, but improve the quality of your sleep.
So before it snows, just get outside while we can.
I'm not joking, it changed Colin.
When I heard that, it didn't make a lot of sense.
And it wasn't, it didn't sound
I'm like, and I know it didn't and I and I've noticed I
will rest better if we do go for like an evening walk.
Absolutely. And it's it's hard because.
It's more comfortable not to, especially when we think about,
oh, what time the sun is setting,
and oh my gosh, it's 4 p.m. and it's completely dark outside.
All of those things do make it a
lot harder to get that outdoor activity,
but if you can force yourself outside for any extra time,
do it. You brought up melatonin.
Let me ask you, your opinion as an expert, what do you think of,
you know, there's quick remedies for everything,
but sleep aids in general, like melatonin, or
I've heard the new thing, it's being fed to me on TikTok.
That tart cherry juice, what's your opinion on that?
So melatonin is just like any other supplement.
If you are deficient in it and you take it,
it's going to help you.
So if you're deficient in melatonin
and then you supplement with melatonin,
it will help your sleep signals be stronger.
The hard part is that
People will take it without being deficient
and then see some weird side effects, like
the crazy dreams, the fever dreams,
or pushing back their bedtime, that kind of thing.
So I guess if you find out by taking it that it helps you,
that's really, you know, that's
the best we can ask for.
Keep with that.
Yeah.
The tart cherry, the cherry juice.
That is real because there is natural melatonin in tart cherry juice.
It's like one of the only natural sources of it, too.
So I've seen it on TikTok, too.
These teenagers are drinking a bunch
and having the greatest sleep of their lives, which I'm
sure they are, but.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You're having the greatest sleep of your life because you're 20.
Yes, exactly.
Like, settle down, Samantha.
We'll be right back.
Back in a moment.
More with Sarah.
There you go.
That is so funny.
I know.
Because they're young.
Just wait, right?
That's helpful sometimes.
Okay, in this break, Sarah Falun has joined us now,
but Sarah, before we move on, we brought
some, executive producer Jeff brought
something up that he's seeing on TikTok.
What's this crap spray, this magnesium spray on your feet?
Does that do anything?
It does.
This is real.
It does?
It does.
So again, most of us are deficient in a lot of things,
and we are not getting a lot of
magnesium in our diets anymore.
So magnesium is a very,
very helpful thing for regulating our timing system, meaning
the time that we might be hungry.
Some people wake up and they're immediately
needing breakfast, but some people can wait
until lunch.
The timing of our circadian rhythms
is somehow generated through the admission of magnesium.
So if you are deficient and you spray
this magnesium spray, we say on the bottom of the
feet because they're actually the larger pores
in your body that can absorb more and really
be helpful.
But yes, this is a very helpful thing.
There are a lot of things that I do not put my name behind,
I would not approve of as
a sleep hack, but magnesium spray is pretty helpful.
I'd like to know.
Okay, on the opposite side, what is like a myth you see all the time?
Good question.
That you were like, oh my gosh, let me just clear this up.
This is not accurate.
I think it's pre-sleeping.
People thinking, okay, I've got this big event coming.
I've got to go.
You can't pre-sleep.
You can only basically sleep in the time
that your cellular structure wants you to.
So it's kind of sad.
Also, the thought of making up sleep, that's difficult as well.
We can do it a little bit with, you know,
taking naps or going to bed a little bit earlier
one night if you have a bad night of sleep.
But really, we do want to focus on just trying
to get eight hours every night.
Okay, let me piggyback off my dear friend's question here.
And it's also, for anybody that works
an early morning shift like the two of us,
so let me represent all of us good early morning risers.
I have heard that there is a point where your nap can be too long,
and then it actually works against you.
Your thoughts on that?
This is true.
So we do say a power nap for a 20 to 30 minute period for a reason.
Within about 10 minutes, our brains go
into what's called deep sleep or stage three sleep.
And this is the very restful stage of sleep.
This is the stage that makes you feel really good.
So within 10 minutes, if we can get about 10,
15 minutes of deep sleep in a nap, that's
going to make you feel really good.
However, if you sleep longer,
you run the risk of going into stage REM, where your muscles
actually become paralyzed so that you can't act out
your dreams and harm yourself or your
bed partner.
So in this stage of REM, you are
You are paralyzed and you can't move.
If you go into stage REM in a nap,
those are those naps where you wake up and you're like,
I'm more tired than I was before I took a nap.
I shouldn't have done that.
That's because you experience sleep paralysis,
and it's a very, very groggy thing.
So keep them short.
Keep them sweet.
Keep them around 20 to 30 minutes, but take that power nap.
And good luck with that,
because if I try to time out a power nap, and I set an alarm
or something, then I'm just waiting
for the alarm, and then I can't go to sleep.
It's a nightmare.
I agree, but I do consider naps to be like any other supplement.
It is supplementation.
We're not getting those eight hours
of sleep every night, so we need to take what we can
get when we can get it.
So take a nap.
When should you stop?
Drinking caffeine.
Oh, good question.
So the tough part with caffeine is that we are so reliant on it.
We really are. I mean,
we wake up, it's the first thing that we think about.
But the hard rule is 2 p.m., no more
caffeinated beverages
because caffeine is a very similarly structured chemical to adenosine,
which is what actually puts us to sleep.
When our adenosine gets released, it goes onto its
adenosine receptor and then you fall asleep.
But caffeine also goes to your adenosine receptor
And it tricks you into feeling a little...
alert and awake which is awesome at two o'clock in the afternoon
but then at bedtime when adenosine
is trying to go to its home it can't.
So you have to have enough time to let that caffeinated
structure process out of your body.
2 p.m. is the hard stop. I know it's hard because we hit
our afternoon slump at you know two three four
but do not drink caffeine then do it a little
bit earlier so you can process it out.
What if I know someone on our staff that drinks anywhere
from 7 to 10 cups of coffee in the morning?
Thank you for coming.
And in the morning, does that affect their sleep later in the day?
It depends on the amount of milligrams of caffeine
and the metabolic rate of this person that probably starts with a J.
Okay.
It's not the name on the floor, though, I was going to say.
Yeah, yeah.
But it can affect later.
Absolutely.
And the tough part is, you know, we get used to these habits,
but all of our habits can be unlearned as well.
So if you do drink a lot of caffeinated beverages, you know,
slowly kind of reducing the rate of how much you consume
is going to be very good for your sleep.
Hear that, Jeff?
Anyway, give it up for sleep expert Sarah Miller.
I'm so glad you're here.
Thank you.
