6 people dead, 9 others injured in Sunset Park fire

Certainly a frightening scene for many neighbors here waking up to that fire. But now it's turned also into a tragedy for this community. As we now know, six people are dead. Two of them died in the hospital. Four were found inside this Sunset Park home. Now, I want to step to the side to give you a look. This is what remains of that home here on 58th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue. As you can see, they're now completely charred. FDNY says when they arrived here just after 1.30 this morning, every floor inside that home was covered in fire. Now, take a look. This is citizen video showing you just how intense those flames were. As you can see, they're shooting out of that second floor window. Now, FDNY says the fire caused a stairwell inside that home. to collapse. Crews were also forced to bring out hazmat resources after they found lithium ion batteries. Now one man can even be seen with debris and burns covering his body as crews rushed to help him. FDNY says the fire grew so much that it extended to a nearby home, displacing two people. Now one neighbor that lives just two homes down tells us what he witnessed. we just see the fire start from the door and up and up and up yeah what did you do when you saw the fire did you run inside tell people or what yeah yeah so people run run run i really think it's together everyone's scared yeah And back to you live, you can just see here again what remains as crews still work and try to determine what exactly caused that fire. This is all despite them using safety gear, again, because of the presence of lithium-ion batteries. Now, we are expected to hear from the FDNY any moment now this morning to bring you more information about what exactly happened here. But I can share that in addition to those people that are dead now, those six people, we also know seven others were injured. Two of them are in critical, while three others are firefighters. That's the latest here in Sunset Park, Jonathan Calixto, News 12.
