A local animal rescue is still stuck in standing water tonight.
Some roads in Grant Valkaria are underwater,
still impassable because of the flooding.
The water did not just ruin a local family's home,
it also destroyed their sanctuary for abandoned animals.
Esther Bauer shows us what they're dealing with.
All across Brevard County, massive devastation like this road washout
are things some people have never seen before. An animal sanctuary
is still underwater after they flooded for the first time in a decade.
Floodwaters rising two feet
at Jill Helsel's property on Valkaria Road.
She had several inches smother the first floor of her home,
but is more worried about her rescue animals outside.
One of them was underwater, so he was freezing to death.
She saved a goat that was drowning during the storm
and brought him into her shower
while her husband moved the others to higher ground.
And had to rescue the goats from their area
and bring them around to the shop.
Three massive tortoises also almost dying during the storm.
If we wouldn't have taken them out
and put them in the back of my truck, they would have drowned.
Her horses have been stuck in standing water for days now.
And today is the first day things have drained
enough where she can survey some of the damage.
The horses were in water for three days. Their hooves have been...
just wet for three days.
All her animals survived the storm, but all their food is gone. Hay and
feed all destroyed and lost when trailers flooded.
The barn, the pastures, everything, the trailers.
Her driveway is still flooded bad,
which makes getting in and out of the property a challenge.
She is surrounded by canals and has no idea
when the rest of her property will start to drain.
We all around here have never
been through something like this ever. It's awful.
It's very awful.
She's trying to restock food for all the animals
and says community donations of hay or feed
would really help her rescue rebuild.
Just a nightmare, crazy nightmare.
What we keep hearing from several people, including Jill,
is they do not live in a documented flood zone
or even have any kind of insurance for flooding.
So at this point, they have no idea if all of their flooded out cars
or water damage inside their homes will even be covered.
