We're just one day away from the start of the 2026 Red Rock Rally, but that doesn't mean we can't squeeze in one more adventure before the festivities begin!
We meet up with a few fellow Chevy Colorado ZR2 owners who have already made it into Moab to tackle Little Canyon, a lesser-known and rarely documented trail that branches off the iconic Gold Bar Rim.
With plenty of technical obstacles, challenging terrain, and incredible scenery, Little Canyon seemed like the perfect way to kick off an epic weekend of wheeling. However, things quickly took a turn for the worse when we reached the trail's first major obstacle.
After severely damaging the driveshaft on my Colorado ZR2, what started as a fun day of exploring quickly turned into a recovery mission. Now, the challenge wasn't just getting through the trail, it was figuring out how to get my damaged truck back off the trail, with the Red Rock Rally set to begin the very next day!
Armando and a convoy of Colorado ZR2s tackle the challenging Little Canyon trail in Moab. While navigating steep ledges and wet terrain, Armando suffers a catastrophic driveshaft failure at \"The Gatekeeper\" obstacle. The subsequent attempt to operate the vehicle without the driveshaft triggers a systemic electronic failure, leaving the truck stranded and requiring a tow.
Is the driveshaft hitting?
It's just your slider.
Oh, okay, it's just the slider?
That driveshaft is completely messed up.
What's
going
on, guys?
We are back with another video.
My name's Armando, and in today's video, we are back in Moab.
And you can see I am joined by a ton of Colorado ZR2s.
And that's because we are here the day before
the third annual ZR2 Red Rock Rally here in Moab.
And we're going to be checking out a trail today
that I could not find a single YouTube video on.
And this trail is called Little Canyon, which branches off of Gold Bar.
So we're here at the start of Gemini Bridges
because we have to take Gemini Bridges up to Gold Bar,
do a small section of Gold Bar, and then jump onto Little Canyon.
It's supposedly rated a 6 out of 10 on trails off-road,
so we're going to see what this little trail has to offer.
Well, after that water run, there's a...
Lost fit rock light, so, is it Moe's?
Yeah.
Uh, well, yep.
Yeah, he, uh...
He?
Uh, fender liner delete with rock light delete.
So, let's go return that to him.
Here's your fender liner delete.
Fender liner delete.
Oh, that light, man.
Oopsies.
Been on the trail for five minutes.
Yeah, five minutes and we're already doing a trail repair.
That fender liner's pretty twisted.
Trail repairs are you just zip tying everything all
the cables up yeah yep so we have now just
made it to the turn off the fork where
if you go left here it is gold bar rim the entrance of gold
bar rim so we got
the whole convoy behind us this trip i
am solo nicole unfortunately is not with me
my lovely camera woman she's the one that's always behind
the camera getting all the great shots
She's at home with her newborn son.
So she is missed on this trip,
so if this video doesn't look as good as it normally does,
that's why, because I am running around,
trying to drive and film at the same time.
But hopefully everything goes well.
We'll see how the start of Gold Bar Rim is.
I know there's a few obstacles we have to do that are mandatory,
that are part of Gold Bar,
before branching off into Little Canyon.
Alrighty, we got kind of to the first little obstacle here, which...
It's a big ledge. It has multiple little lines on it,
kind of like a moderate line here.
I don't know what I'm doing.
Slick.
A
little
bit, a
little
bit
of a
bump.
Nothing
crazy.
Slow.
Yeah,
your
tires are
gonna
lift
here
and your
bumper will
go up. Really
slick out
here, guys.
It rained
a lot the
last four
or five days.
Got it.
There you go.
Nice. You're,
you'll get it,
but you're,
you're
digging
into that
rock
a little
bit. Let's see if I'm gonna buy
this bumper or not. Uh, you might.
It's like just touching.
Nice, as a reference he's on 37s, and he's also got a super high
clearance rear bumper too, which helps a ton is the skid plate and
There she goes
as a big
ledge
There you go. Nice.
Very clean bump.
Nice, dude.
Here she goes. Just
the hitch taking
some optional
lines here
There he goes up
and over if you
guys can see how
close that super
high clearance
rear bumper is.
That's how much
That's how much departure angle he has now.
There
he
goes.
You gotta go
passenger again.
His rear
bumper's
getting...
Matt.
He did?
He did.
Mike's nerves are through the roof
Haha.
right now.
Like creep up to that and then
My heel descent is on and it's stepping me up.
There he goes! Yeah!
Don't worry captain we'll buff that out.
So as you saw there that was the kind of first
obstacles just on Gold Bar Rim.
You had that first ledge and then you had that series of
kind of steep hill that you had a few line choices to choose from.
So we're still chugging along here in uh Gold Bar.
I think there's one more mandatory obstacle
that we come up on on Gold Bar
and then after that we finally transfer on to Little Canyon.
So we have arrived to the next obstacle
which is basically just a bunch of series of big steps
going upwards which is nothing we haven't done before.
So I just hit the first tap on the next
step which is a little bit bigger.
Here we go, second step.
And keep in mind, like I mentioned earlier,
everything is still wet because the day we're doing this is the
Day after all the heavy rains that we got
from the remnants of Hurricane Rachel.
If you're liking the video so far,
make sure to leave a like and subscribe to the channel if you aren't.
It helps me out a ton, and that way, if you're subscribed,
you don't miss out on any future videos.
So you guys are able to see what I was seeing,
what you didn't see before with me driving,
because I was set up on a tripod,
but this was the first ledge I was talking about.
And then you guys saw me come up.
The second ledge here,
three-wheeled
action here.
Let me go help out Jose real quick.
He seems to be stuck.
See how I can help him out here.
I think you gotta
come passenger first.
You're fine there.
I think you can just come passenger.
Yep, keep it like that.
Keep it straight and then turn.
Once you climb up the back,
then turn driver.
There
you go.
Get some more of this last
little ledge here, some action.
Look like Mo is trying to go for the little bit harder line.
Nice.
Very nice. I've been a little more.
You're hung up on your diff.
You're hung up on your diff.
Yeah, you're on top of a rock. So you got to back up.
Keep going. Keep going. Keep going.
All right. From there,
go like hard passenger.
Yeah. I'm not sure
if you're going to clear that
with
your
front
bumper.
There
it is.
Almost
at it.
Section
here,
still
on
Gold
Bar,
where
there's
a
series of large steps on the way down.
There's been a few skid plate smacks. Yeah, Mike should
We should have a bumper sale after this trail.
I hit a few bumpers from that comment,
a few rear bumper strikes, so it is definitely not
departure angle friendly.
For me, I'm better off as far as departure
because I do have that high clearance rear
bumper.
Not as high clearance as Kim's,
but it is significantly better than the factory ZR2 bumper.
We just made it down that last ledge there,
now the rest of the convoy's gotta slowly
make their way down.
So this is the second lower portion of the steps.
The ones before were up there,
where Zach is now about to go down.
And then these were the second portions of steps.
Again, this is kind of still on Gold Bar on our way down.
I think we only have about a quarter mile that way
before we actually get to the turnoff to Little Canyon.
We're just slowly making our way down,
but this is definitely a,
A bumper scraper, or at least a hitch scraper, a minimum.
How's the hitch? Just
keep it slow there.
Very slow.
He's dead.
Yeah, the lights just flickered weirdly.
Nice and slow, and you'll just touch down on your hitch.
There you go.
All right, nice.
So after finishing those last steps,
we are finally getting to the intersection
where if you hang a left gold bar...
Continues, if you hang a right,
we go to Little Canyon and that is the trail we're doing today.
Also, if you're wondering why there's a Bronco, an imposter amongst us,
that's because that is my dad's Bronco.
So he's technically joining for the ZR2 Red
Rally, Red Rock Rally, but obviously he gets a pass.
He came out to kill two birds with one
stone to see his grandson, his new grandson,
his first grandson, and come wheeling.
So that's why if you're ever wondering why there's
a Bronco in the videos for the Red Rock Rally
and upcoming Red Rock Rally, that is the reason.
So here is the gatekeeper, the first obstacle along.
Again, it's supposedly the hardest and I mean,
I can definitely see why.
It is a pretty big ledge you have to climb up here
and there really isn't a lot of options here that we have.
So I'm probably going to get a spot for this just
because I want to make sure I clear it properly.
And we'll see how it goes.
Okay, you're locked?
Not yet.
I'm gonna go double locked here.
Oh, okay.
You're on the rock.
You have to climb it though.
All right.
You're up.
This
good?
Yeah.
Yeah, you're over it.
But you're gonna
have some sliders.
I
think
I'm...
I feel it floating.
This wheel's floating.
Yeah.
Do you
think...
There's some sliders there, right?
You need one of the wheels on each of them.
Right.
You got, yeah, you got the right wheels on.
This one's out.
Back up a little bit.
I can put some more rocks over here.
How do you think, Kim?
Yeah.
Well, here we go.
Right,
no more?
Throw in some rocks so that way I can get up
and not be on my sliders here.
If you climb on those,
we go slowly.
All right.
It's all frame
and sliders.
How's the drive shaft?
The drive shaft is far away.
Far away?
Yeah, it's far away.
You're right here on the...
I'm on the shaft?
Not way.
Yeah, hold on.
I'm on the yacht.
OK.
Okay, I can't do more than that.
Okay, let me see if I can stack something over here.
Turn a little bit driver and go slow, see what happens.
I put rocks underneath, so...
They're stacking on that side.
Okay.
The heavy
ones.
It should work, yeah.
Because you're sitting right
on the frame right here in the corner of the cabin.
That's all.
You're going to climb now.
Is the drive shaft hitting?
Is the drive shaft hitting?
It's just a slider.
Okay, it's just a slider.
On the driver's side.
On the drive shaft.
Well,
I got bad news.
I completely mangled my drive shaft here.
Not sure if you can see there,
but that drive shaft is completely messed up.
We just got it off down that obstacle,
went down the bypass, and we are currently backing
out the same way we came on Gold Bar.
The good news is
We were calling around and we were able to find
a shop in Grand Junction that would be able to
retube it for us. So that way we're able to get back.
Hopefully, he said if we dropped it off
today, which is Thursday,
we'd be able to pick it up tomorrow on Friday. So hopefully that's the
case. That way we're able to pick it up
and then we can be good to go. It's a shame that there's
There's not a single...
I mean, from my research and calling around
and stuff like that, there's not a single
shop in Moab that retubes driveshafts, which is kind of crazy.
You'd think that would be
really hot commodity and really good for business
to have retubing driveshafts, but it is what it
is. I mean, it happened. It stinks that it happened before even
the Red Rock Rally officially started.
It's part of off-roading. It's part of the game.
So the plan is to keep as little stress on the
driveshaft itself. We're going to be winching
our way up the steps we came down.
So that way, because it is twisted pretty bad,
I don't want to twist it even more or
potentially twisting it so much that it snaps in two pieces.
So we're going to play it safe there.
The other obstacles we're all from this point now would
be downhill instead of uphill.
So that's just brakes.
So we'll be able to get that off.
And then once we get back on Gemini Bridges,
we'll take off the rear drive shaft.
So then it'll be a front-wheel drive truck.
I'm just
going
to stay
attached
here.
We got a static strap.
That way it's just easier to pull up big ledges.
This way there's not a whole lot
of stress on the drivetrain.
So far so good.
I think
if you
go left
it's
probably
going
to eat
you.
You just go forward so that way you can tense it up.
I'm not
even
using
throttle,
he's
pulling
me up.
The last
little ledge
is here,
he's pulling
out the Chevy.
I'm not broken, it's not the Chevy's fault necessarily,
it's just the line.
I apologize in advance for the lack of filming
the other vehicles on the way back out, but
I just wanted to give a little bit of context of what's happening,
but we're pressed for
time because a shop that said that they can get us
in today is in Grand Junction, so...
From Moab to Grand Junction is about an hour
and a half to two depending on how you're driving and
we still got to get off the trail
and get to a shop before he closes at five and it is currently
noon so we still probably have I would say close
to an hour before we get off this trail and then
on top of that then another you know 30 minutes
or whatever finagling with getting the drive shaft off
And then driving the driveshaft over there.
So I want to make sure.
We get that we don't waste too much time filming
and miss that window to drop off that driveshaft.
So far so good though.
So you can see the damage from the driveshaft.
It is completely mangled and bent,
so we're gonna have to take it off now.
That's the plan.
And then you can see just beyond here,
you see the fuel tank completely dented in
and that bracket there bent up to cut that rock.
And pulled back, so I'll have to fix that strap there.
I'm not sure if I can fix the fuel tank, but at least
plan is now to get this driveshaft out so
we can go and get it delivered to that shop so we can fix it.
So got the driveshaft out of the truck, so it is currently a
front-wheel drive truck. My dad's going to be driving to Grand
Junction now with the driveshaft. You can see here,
Fully out.
all its mangled glory so that shop can fix it
because I got to stay behind and
get ready for the meet-and-greet
that was supposed to be happening in a couple
hours. So hopefully you guys enjoyed the video.
If you did, be sure to leave a little like and subscribe.
We'll see you guys in the next video.
Well, you thought the video was over. Just kidding. It was a joke.
Turns out, Colorado, or Chevys in general,
when you take out the driveshaft, the
The electronics in this freaking thing freak out.
The traction control gives a traction control error,
gives a bunch of errors, it thinks you're driving on a spare tire,
whatever, and then disables four-wheel drive,
and you cannot use four-wheel drive.
So I drove maybe a quarter of a mile to half a mile down the trail
in four high before everything freaked out and kicked me out
of four-wheel drive, so then I could no longer move under my own power
because I couldn't use my front wheels.
So we are currently being towed off of Gemini Bridges by Jose
because we don't get the drive
shaft back until supposedly tomorrow afternoon,
which hopefully that is indeed the case that we
get it tomorrow afternoon.
So that way we can reinstall it and then actually be on our own
power. Isn't it great electronics, right?
With that being said, hopefully you guys did enjoy
I'm thankful for having some great people to help me out in this
Unfortunately, troubling time.
Make sure to leave a like on the video,
and we'll see you guys in the next video.
