Wow. That is interesting.
So this is how the Turkish have their breakfast. It is an absolute feast.
And they just cook it all over there and hand it across the water.
Oh yes. Oh, it's still nice and warm. Good morning everybody.
Welcome to Istanbul.
Today before we kind of venture off on our big adventures through Turkey,
we thought we'd go and find some traditional food.
Starting off with some street food. Perfect breakfast snack.
We've seen this everywhere.
It's called simit and you'll notice these little stands literally scattered all
through Istanbul. And it's like, I guess it's like a round ring bread,
kind of like a bagel. And it's the go-to quick meal. You grab this,
you grab a coffee and then you head to work. But, um,
this is our first time trying it. So simit cheers.
Cleo decided to go all out and got a chocolate one.
Straight into it. Okay. What's, what's the chocolate one like? It's good.
It's so good. It's like not too hard, not too soft.
It kind of looks like a pretzel. Is it different to the pretzel?
Maybe similar to a pretzel. I don't really know how to describe it,
but they're really, really yummy.
Especially if you're having it for breakfast. I mean,
we got the street food version, but if you had a breakfast place,
dipping this into jam would be so good. Or Nutella.
It's really yummy.
So we've only been in Turkey for a few days now. And so far,
what we have tasted has been amazing. So we thought today,
we're going to dedicate this day to food and try as many Turkish street foods as
we can, but we need to have breakfast.
It's the only way to start a food tour here in Istanbul.
It's my favorite word. I'm dedicating today to food.
Breakfast is a banquet.
I know you're just like sitting here watching them and you know what?
There's still more to come. I also ordered the men and men stuff that we love.
So this is how the Turkish have their breakfast. It is an absolute feast.
They always have a plate of sort of cheeses. They've got a bunch of dips,
always Nutella, always. They love their Nutella. We've also got honey.
We've got jam. We've got eggs. We've got olives.
They always have cucumber and tomato and a big pile of bread.
It's free flowing tea. So it's all you can drink tea.
And it costs 25 Lira per person. That's like $5.
This we have ordered separately. This is minimum.
It's my favorite breakfast dish here in Turkey.
It's like eggs and tomatoes and beans and cheese. And it is so delicious.
And it comes in like a big hot pot.
Where do you even start? Like seriously.
Have you ever seen a breakfast plate like this before? Oh my goodness.
It's like your own personal buffet.
There's one dish you guys need to order. It's the minimum. It is so good. Wow.
And honestly, the Turks have a healthy breakfast.
Like most of it consists of salads and eggs.
And there is a big pile of Nutella over there. Ignore that. It's pretty healthy.
Cheers everyone. May the best eater win.
Let's see how much we can get through. We're getting through it.
Breathe up. We need a breather for my breakfast.
Now the actual Turkish coffee machine has broken, unfortunately.
So we can't show you that guys, but we've ordered the next best thing.
This is primarily a winter based drink.
So we're actually super lucky that they're still serving this in the middle of
summer at the moment. It's called Selef.
And this is made from orchids and cinnamon. Now smelling it,
it smells like a chai latte if I'm going to like describe it and the really cool
and unique thing about this is because the orchids are in such low supply,
it is illegal to export this.
So you're going to have to try this drink in Turkey.
So I'm pretty happy we get to try this. That's Christmas.
Tastes like a Christmas drink. It's thick.
There's a cinnamon on there and it warms you up. I can see why they,
like they sell this on the street during winter.
It's like a warm Christmas soup.
I'm so full and it's just the start of the food tour.
If you guys want to check it out, it's called Van Cavalti.
We'll leave all the names of the places that we visit and the food we try in the
description below. But wow,
I don't know how we're going to get through the next stop.
That was the first time we've gone to a place where they didn't have any coffee
available. And we were thinking, do we go to a place that has Turkish coffee?
But you can find Turkish coffee pretty much everywhere you go here in Istanbul.
So we thought we would go find a place that does amazing Turkish coffee.
And also amazing flat whites and lattes.
Here's your flat white.
The fanciest Turkish coffee you've ever seen. Are you ready?
It's a tray just made for it. Turkish coffee, water and then the Turkish delight.
You need to have a bite of the Turkish delight first.
And then take a sip of your coffee.
That's the one you do it.
Okay, please.
Thank you.
Thank you. Bye.
So that's what happens when you order ice cream here in Turkey.
When did you even order the ice cream?
I don't know if I even ordered it, but I've got it.
So I just asked for everything. I don't even know what flavors they are,
but the ice cream here in Turkey, it's super sticky. So, um,
like how many layers is that? I don't know. Pistachio, berry and vanilla,
I think. And chocolate. I'm like shook. That was crazy.
It's super stringy. Oh yum. The berry is so yummy.
You've got so many flavors there.
Try it. That's so good.
Now you guys know how much we love our pizza. So for lunch,
we're going to try Turkey version of pizza.
Oh, that looks great.
I think I actually ordered like a pizza shaped one cause I've seen them before
and they're more like that shape. I know it's just out of the oven.
It's cheese and mushroom we got. Okay. We've seen this everywhere.
It's the perfect drink to have with lunch.
Apparently all the Turkish people keep saying to us it's called Ayran and it's
a yogurt drink. I think that's the best description of it.
Yeah. It smells like yogurt. Um, wow.
That is interesting.
So it's like a salty yogurt drink. So it's really, really salty.
Is it sweet at all? Um, okay. I'll have to try it.
You have to try this. Let me see if I can explain it. Hang on.
It has no smell.
So salty. Wow.
It tastes like natural yogurt with a bunch of salt in it. All right,
let's try out Pide. It just looks like pizza. I really,
I feel like everyone's going to comment saying we ordered the wrong thing.
I'm so sorry. We literally came to a place with Pide in the name, but um,
it just tastes like good cheese mushroom pizza.
It's all about that base. Like seriously.
That is such good. If you like thick crust pizza.
Alrighty guys,
we've now come down to the Bosphorus and we were at Galata bridge.
Now this place has a very, very famous dish.
Years and years ago when the fishermen used to come and fish off the bridge,
just like they are today,
they used to catch the fish and then set up little grill stations and they'll
grill their fish, put it into bread and sell it as a fish sandwich.
Now restaurants have decided to pick this dish up because it got so popular.
And now underneath the bridge,
there are a bunch of restaurants all selling this dish.
It's called Black Ekmek, which literally translates to fish bread or fish sandwich.
So we're going to go and try and find one today.
I'm sure it's going to be quite easy to find one.
So it's literally a ship and they just cook it all over there and hand it across
the water.
Come in. Thank you. Oh wow. So this is all your fish.
Australia. Australia.
So they make it all here,
prepare it here on this boat and then they hand it across to the salesman over
there and you order it over there.
Very cool. Very cool.
Guys, we just found a boat and they were grilling up so much fish.
They let Stephen go on the boat, which is so cool. But here it is.
The famous Balik Ekmek. It costs us 12 Liras, around $3.
And then for less than a dollar,
we got, they recommended that we tried pickle juice.
So um, we have a fish sandwich with pickle juice.
Literally there's pickles in there.
So we've got fish, lettuce and onion. That's it.
Fish, lettuce and onion. Let's do it.
It's good. The fish is really, really fishy.
It's just the fish. And this place is just so busy.
We're lucky to get a seat.
Good snack food. Good takeaway food.
Just grab one of these and continue on with your day.
I don't even know what to expect.
It's pickle juice, literally from the jar. Pickle juice. Oh my gosh, Cleo.
You know how some pregnant ladies, they crave pickle juice? This is the spot.
This is the spot pregnant ladies. Yeah.
They have a lot of different pastries here.
Yes. Peanuts, cheese, potato, meat.
This is foret? Yes, foret.
So if you're looking for the perfect afternoon snack and you've had too many
gozlemis, this is another style you can go for.
So it's called borek and it's a whole different range of pastries.
So we decided to get spinach and this was 10 lira,
which is the equivalent of $2.20 Australian for all this.
Like he kept piling it on there. I'm like, no, you can stop. This is too much.
So it's like thin pastry stuffed with spinach or you can get cheese or you can
get potato or you can get beef. It's kind of what it looks like inside.
This really reminds me of gozlemi and they're both amazing to have.
Perfect for an afternoon snack.
If you just wanted to walk down the street and just eat something warm and
something yum, I'd recommend this.
Alrighty. So we did have our hipster Turkish coffee earlier today.
Now we have the traditional way, cooking it on the coals.
Rookie mistake. Rookie mistake.
It's come to the spice bazaar, pretty much like the grand bazaar,
but it's all spices, sweets. We're on our way to the final kind of stop,
which is dessert. So this is a good place to get it.
So much baklava.
We can sit up here and watch the spice markets and then eat a lot of dessert.
So we've come to this little dessert house in the spice markets and they
specialize in baklava and they had so many different flavors.
So I tried to choose the ones that I thought looked the best.
I've got a pistachio, a walnut, and then a different looking one with a walnut.
I don't know exactly what it's called, but I'm guessing it's still baklava.
But Cleo has never tried baklava before. We've tried it a few times,
but never here in Turkey. So pistachio first. Okay.
Warning. Very sweet. Okay.
Oh my gosh. That is the best baklava I've ever had. Really? That's yummy.
Yeah. What do you think of it? Cause we've had it a few times.
It's like, it's like savory and sweet. Yeah. And the nuts.
So what was this one? It's so different to anything I've tried that.
It's like crispy and sweet. Oh, I'm excited. Okay.
Okay. That one's the best.
It's like walnuts just wrapped in one layer of pastry instead.
That one's very good. That's very different.
Like the other two are quite similar, but still different in their own right.
But this one, cause the walnuts are so big, not too sweet.
And it overpowers it, which is nice. And I love walnuts. Yum. Alrighty.
I hope you guys enjoyed that video. There were just so many Turkish food to try.
I think my favorite was the Christmas tree.
Yeah. It was really good. Yours, Cleo?
So we actually exploring Turkey for a total of like three weeks.
I think we're heading to the small towns, the coastal villages.
So there's any food we missed.
Make sure you leave a comment below cause we really want to try as much as
possible. But if you are new around here,
make sure you hit that subscribe button because the Turkey videos are just
beginning. So many adventures coming your way. Thanks so much for watching guys.
Hey guys,
we were quickly back at our hotel room and I really wanted to show you a proper
PDA. So this is it here kind of chopped up.
Can you see how it goes into the corner bits at the end there?
This is how you meant to have a proper PDA also at the grocery store,
getting some water. And I realized that Turkey,
they don't like kids and their cats. So I got myself a cat cat.
And while we had a little sneak peek,
it's going to be a really good state for the next few days.
Then Hinga beach is like a five minute drive and they pick you up in Teslas.
I have a secret. What's your secret? I don't really like red wine.
I feel like it's like it's in the moment. We have to have a sip.
Plus we're literally in the most romantic place. We need to, I mean,
just look at your background.
