Scrambling Up A Cliff And Hoping For The Best
So I've never actually done this part of the gully before. I've always climbed out
and up along those spiky rocks. What I love about Brighton's Gully is it's so varied,
especially when it's brand new to me like this bit. So let's get up there. Wowzers!
Now the question is, do I go around that easy or do I go straight up it? I'll give it a shot.
Okay, this has got my heart beating quite hard I think. It's the sort of route where everything's
really straightforward until it just suddenly isn't and you find yourself halfway up this
pretty nasty cliff with nowhere to go. Fuckin' hell. Because I've never done this before,
I've never even seen this bit before, I need that extra bit of nerves because I don't know
for sure I'm doing the right thing. Oh my god, look at that. Surely this is grade three, this
part. I don't like that, I don't like that. Come on, okay. I've always got to plan two moves ahead
when it's like this, especially when you're kind of at an angle, a more awkward angle,
your weight pulling you outwards. ------- hell. Yeah, I'm pretty high up here.
Oh god, I'm not doing right. Decision time. Keep going. Yeah, see that's all right there.
Oh come on, nearly there. Definitely can't climb all the way back down from here.
Oh jeez, right. Oh come on, come on, come on, come on. Think steady.
It's just an overhang here, that's what's got me.
That is definitely solid, okay. Oh for ****'s sake, what am I doing?
So close, but I can't see. I had to pull myself up there, my feet are right down there,
this is all overhang. So what I'm going to do, I'm going to try and work my way along
and go round, because I'm about six meters up at the moment. Six meters onto sharp rocks
in a completely desolate gully. I don't need that. Right, how the hell do I even cross this?
Oh dear, I guess this is what I come out for. This is that adrenaline I wanted, but ******* hell.
There's nothing reliable for my foot. Come on Dave, think man, think.
My only chance is to go back on myself. It's just so much overhang.
Hi, I'm Brave Dave and I'm on the side of a cliff. Well, I don't think it's part of any route.
I don't think I should be here. I don't know if the camera can really bring out just how sheer this is.
It's one of these cliffs where it looks like there's loads of handholds, loads of footholds,
which there are, but you suddenly get to a bit and there's nothing reliable that you want to
commit to 100%. And this is the sort of place where you need to be able to commit 100% because
if I slip off here, oh, what a place to die, bleeding out down there. That'd be pretty ----.
I'm so close to the top here, but there's nothing,
there's nothing I'm prepared to risk along these bits. Look how smooth and overhanging parts
there are. So I'm going back down and even that's a bloody challenge.
So I think I've put this camera back on my head. Come on, nearly down.
All right, at least I tried that. Now I'm going to go around it.
Can't say I didn't try. Almost wish I hadn't.
Thanks for watching. Goodbye.
