Hey, so today we're talking about mistakes you're making that are laying your hair flat
and I decided to bring you here to do that. Why? Because there's a large volume of water and we're
talking about volume. It's a stretch. Actually, no, because there's something over there that
is really important to me and yeah, we'll see how long you stick around this video and
you'll find out exactly what that is. But right now, let's talk about some volume.
Oh, oh, oh, oh. And by the way, if you're new to my channel, Justin Hickox,
done hair for a while. I share tips on here to make your hair life a little easier. So if hair
is important to you, you're going to want to join the rest of us. Hit that button over there,

Okay, so the first mistake you could be making is not using product. Now, I know there's some
out there that just don't want to use product. I totally get it. But here's the deal. Let me put
this in perspective. Have you ever gone into the salon for maybe a big engagement, right? Maybe you
were going to a wedding and you had to get your hair done or you're going to prom or something
and they asked you to come in with dirty hair. They said, don't wash your hair before you come
in. Or maybe some of them told you to use products before you came in. The reason they did that is
because they want it to feel dirty because at the end of the day, squeaky clean hair,
super soft, silky hair. Well, it seems amazing and it's kind of what most people want. It's the
worst in terms of trying to create volume. So if you're not using something in effect to actually
make it dirty, I know it doesn't sound awesome, but to make it feel dirty, then you're going to
have a really hard time having any foundation for creating volume. It's like building a house without
a foundation. Yeah, exactly. Okay, to show you what I mean, I took a mannequin and I dried its hair
two different times. One time I added product, the other time it was completely clean, no product
whatsoever. I dried the hair upside down because this is a good way to create volume. And this is
what it looks like with no product in it. Yes, the style is horrible, but you can see how much
volume it gets. Now this is with product in it. You can see it gets a lot more volume. Of course,
it's not smoothed out, but you can tell the difference in volume that product will achieve.
So here's the thing. Most products are created to make hair feel kind of dirty. Typically,
they make hair feel dirty without the oil, and that's how you get volume from them. So
not using products, it's going to be your first mistake. Let's talk about your second mistake.
Okay, then the next mistake is creating too much curl, really. Curl at the end. Many times what
will happen is people will think, hey, if I can just get some curl or some wave in my hair,
then at least I'll get some volume. But then what happens is they create this wave at the
ends and not all the way up starting at the roots again. So there's no way through the mid-shaft.
It's just wave at the very ends. And ultimately what ends up happening is that starts compounding
on itself. And then you lack actual true volume. You just get big hair basically around the bottom.
You don't get root lift, which is part of where actual volume comes from.
So with this model, you can see that I just gave her some curl at the very ends. Now you can see
that it does give her a little bit of fluff at the bottom, a little bit of width, but it's not
creating true shape or volume. It's just creating larger hair at the bottom and it's creating a bit
of a kind of triangular shape. Okay, so the next mistake people make is not getting enough bend in
their hair. At the end of the day, bend is what creates actual true volume. Now there's a
difference and I've talked about this before. Actually, if you want to check out a video that
talks all about how to create bend in your hair, look right up here. But at the end of the day,
bend creates volume. Root lift just creates root lift. And a lot of people mistake the two.
They mistake root lift for being what creates volume, when in reality, you have to have bend
from the roots all the way down to the end. If you get true bend, you're creating true volume.
So one of the biggest mistakes I see when people are trying to get volume, but their hair is laying
flat, is simply not adding enough bend. Oh, and by the way, how cool is that tree right there?
Just one little random tree hanging out all by itself in some rocks. Kind of dope.
So does that mean you can't use strip and shampoo? Absolutely, you can use strip and shampoo. I would
say once a week or once every week and a half or so is fine because that's going to help strip out
some of the natural flow. Day-to-day shampoos aren't going to take out. So that's fine,
just don't use them every day. Okay, and that brings me to one of the biggest things that I
see when it comes to lack of volume, and that's lack of layers. Now I know that many people are
very scared to do layers. Maybe you feel like it's going to thin your hair out too much. It's
going to make it look too shattered. It's going to make it look flat to your head because it's
going to take all your hair away. I get it, but what we have to understand is layers create volume.
So here's the thing. Volume is an optical illusion in hair, okay? The more volume you have on the
sides of your hair, the flatter the top is going to appear. The more volume you have on the top,
the flatter the sides are going to appear. So many times if your hair is one length,
it'll create this kind of triangular shape. And when it does that, it creates the illusion that
there's no volume in the crown. And many times because the hair is heavy, when it's not layered,
there is no volume in the crown. But having that extra volume through the sides is going to make
the top look even more flat. Simply taking some of that length out of the sides so there's a little
bit less hair there to be full, that's going to allow it to lighten up that top layer and it's
going to give that layer more volume by itself, which is also going to take some of that volume
out of the sides and therefore create the illusion that there's even more volume and
shape in the top. So this is the perfect example. I've got volume in this mannequin's hair, but it's
mainly on the sides. Now, the second I actually pin her hair back on the sides, it actually makes
it look like there's a lot more volume on the top. It's taking the emphasis off the side and
creating the illusion there's more volume on top. Now, I promise you there is a way that you can do
layering even on fine hair and not make it look thinner. So don't think just because you have fine
hair or just because you have thin hair that you can't have layers. You absolutely can. You just
want to make sure that it's done right. I know, that's reassuring, isn't it? But right now, what
I need you to do is watch this video right here where I'm going to walk through how you go through
the process of drying your hair at home, how you create volume, how you create the bend that we're
talking about, and share some other tips that are going to be really cool and you're going to want
to hear them. And again, guess what? Puppies. Feed them. Hungry hippos. These guys. That was gross.
We'll do that again. Okay. See you in the next video. Thanks for hanging out. Subscribe.
You're still around. Cool. Okay. So at the very beginning of this video, I told you that this
place was very special to me. Well, let me tell you why. I actually proposed to my wife right
about in here, in this area, right over here. Yeah. I actually came out here and thought this
would be the perfect place to propose to her. So what I did was I brought her out here, said we
are going to do a day hike, and we came out here. I actually had her two kids. So when I met Deanna,
she had two kids. We still have two kids, but she had a nine-year-old and a seven-year-old,
Maddox and Tatum. And so I had their grandma bring them out. They hid in the bushes
right over there. They stood right here. And what they did was they took photos. So I blindfolded
her. I brought her out here. And then I said, okay. And I got down on one knee and I did the
whole thing. And she didn't know that her kids, because I knew it was very special for her to
have her kids involved in this wedding. So she didn't know that they were actually hiding in
the bushes, taking photos of us so that when we got home, we could have them have the little
photos put around so that she could see our proposal through their eyes. I thought that was
kind of cool. She liked it. It worked. Oddly enough, she said yes. Still trying to figure
that one out. But yeah, this is where we propose. This is where it happened. That's why I love this
place. I think it's really cool. So I wanted to share that with you. Thanks for hanging out.
And by the way, I'm going to be doing more of these. And I'm also going to be doing a little
special stuff for these after show events, giving away free stuff, checking out cool stuff,
you know, special stuff that only the real, true, true community rock stars are going to be part of
like you. Okay. Thanks a lot. We'll talk to you soon. Catch you in the next video. Bye.
