What's up guys? Welcome to Off the Great Wall. I'm Dan.
I'm Yi.
Mike.
Alright guys, growing up in the US,
we had a lot of different experiences with our parents
in contrast to our Western friends.
That's right.
Yeah, when we hang out with our Western friends,
we kind of get a glimpse of what their parents are like
and from the stories that they tell us.
Exactly.
So we put together some scenarios
and this video is not trying to say that
Asian parents are not as good as Western parents
because that's not the case.
That's different.
They're different.
And this is all drawn from real life experience.
Check it out guys.
Here are the differences between Asian and Western parents.
Honey, your daddy and I just wanted you to know
that you can be anything when you grow up.
You can be the president.
You can be Bill Gates.
Anything.
But you can count on whatever you become,
we will be proud of you.
Isn't that right, dear?
That's right.
Son, you can be so many things.
You can be engineer, doctor, lawyer.
Yeah.
If you want a risky fun job, try dentist.
You think you're in love?
Oh, honey, I'm so happy for you.
What's he like?
Is he cute?
You think you're in love?
You're crazy.
You're too young.
You don't know what love is.
Stay in school, study hard, get a good job,
then marry somebody.
You want to sleep over at Mike's?
Of course, son.
Have a good time.
Sleep over?
What?
Why you want to make trouble for other people?
You have very good bed here.
Why go somewhere else?
What if there's earthquake?
You die under falling bookshelf.
No one help you.
You made the football team, son?
That's great.
Hey, you know your old man used to play football.
Why don't I go show you how to throw a spiral like Tom Brady?
You want to play football?
So violent.
What a waste of time.
Stay in school, study hard,
get into good college.
You want to join club?
Join math club.
Yeah.
Yeah, those kids are cool.
Your dad was in math club.
You got a B plus on your math test?
Great job, honey.
I'm going to put this on the fridge so your father can see.
You got B plus on test?
I have BF.
What's the difference?
B, you know what?
B is bad.
Oh, honey, is it prom already?
I'm going to take you to the mall this afternoon
so you can pick out a beautiful dress.
I'm so excited for you.
You're going to have such a great time.
Prom?
What is prom?
Prom is dancing boogie-woogie with boys.
What?
Too young.
No.
Go study.
No prom, no prom.
Go study.
Where do babies come from?
Well, let's see.
When a mommy and a daddy loves each other very much...
We found you on garbage can.
Now go away.
Oh, hey, son.
How are you?
Yeah, your mother and I were wondering if you were free this weekend.
We happen to be in the area and we'd love to take you out for brunch.
Excellent.
Well, we'll see you then.
We love you.
Bye.
Son, we're here.
Drop by, say hello.
So messy.
Your wife don't know how to clean.
Aw, he's so cute.
He's our first grandchild.
Son, you're going to be a great father.
You probably want us to get out of your hair now, so we'll be doing that.
But just so you know, you can call us anytime and we will be there to help you take care of the little guy.
And son, look, very smart.
Probably get into good school.
By the way, mom and dad move in with you to help take care of kid, okay?
Honey, your father and I just wanted to let you know that we love you very much.
No reason, we just wanted to let you know.
Hey, mom and dad, I was just on YouTube watching Off the Great Wall
and there was a video talking about how Asians don't say I love you to each other.
So I just want to say I love you both.
Why you say strange things like that?
Are you ill?
Well, I'm going to make you full right now.
Son, a part-time job?
Well, that's a great idea.
You can save some money and finally get that baseball glove you wanted.
I'll even teach you how to throw a curve.
You got part-time job?
Waste of time.
Go study.
You want something?
We buy for you.
We can't afford.
Son, I almost forgot.
This is your allowance for the week.
Allowance?
Why are you so young?
What you need money for?
You want something?
Tell mom.
Mom buy for you.
Hey, son.
Hey, dad.
Did you buy an Xbox?
Sure did.
Sweet.
You got one for me?
Yeah.
Here, join in.
Awesome.
What are we playing here?
We're going to kill this alien.
Alright.
What is this?
Did you buy a video game?
Yeah, but with my own money.
I want my new game so bad for you.
Yesterday, I read in paper, boy play video game, drop out of school.
Do you want to drop out of school?
Huh?
No, no, no more.
Son, we're so proud of you that you're going off to college now.
And you know, college is expensive.
So make sure you fill out that financial aid form and maybe even get a part-time job.
Builds character.
Come here, son.
You're about to go off to college.
We don't say this often, but we're very proud of you.
Study hard.
Don't worry about tuition.
That's right.
College very hard.
You study hard, but make sure to eat a lot.
Okay?
If you don't have money, ask mom.
Don't starve yourself.
Okay.
I love you, girl.
What are you doing?
He's sick again.
Go mix him some food.
Don't get me sick.
So there you go, guys.
Again, we're not trying to say Asian parents are not as good.
They're just a lot more strict.
Yeah.
And they have their reasons to be a lot more strict, right?
And also they express less emotions.
But that's just the way that things go.
You know, it's not that they love us less.
We know they love us.
But you know.
They show it in different ways.
Exactly.
And we all know how hard our parents were to provide basically anything we wanted and
really take care of us.
Definitely.
But it would have been nice if they let me go like sleep over at Timmy's house once in
a while.
But you know what?
No college loan debt for us.
Yeah.
So it's cool.
We're not trying to generalize.
There are exceptions to every case.
Anyways, guys.
Thank you.
Thanks for watching.
We hope you liked that.
