Vom Metallherrscher
by Josef Wenzig
There was a widow
and she had a very beautiful daughter.
The mother was a humble woman.
The daughter alone was a proud girl.
There were many bridesmaids, but none were her right.
And the more the bridesmaids tried to get around her,
the more the bridegroom guarded her.
Once, in a bright night, the mother woke up.
And since she could not sleep again right away,
she took the rose wreath from the wall
and began to pray for the healing of her daughter,
who was worrying her.
The daughter lay next to her and slept.
The mother looked with pleasure at her beautiful child.
The daughter smiled in her sleep.
What might the girl's beautiful dream
that she smiles so sweetly?
The mother thinks.
Prays that father will end ours,
hangs up the rose wreath again,
puts her head next to the daughter's
and falls asleep.
In the morning she asks the daughter,
But daughter,
tell me what beautiful dream did you have tonight
that you smiled in your sleep?
What dream did I have, mother?
Ay, I dreamed that a gentleman was coming around me
in a carriage,
and he gave me a ring with little stones
that twinkled like the stars in the sky.
And when I came to church,
the people only looked at the mother of God
and at me.
Oh, child,
what lofty dreams you have!
said the old mother and shook her head.
But the daughter went to her work singing.
The same day a farmer's carriage drove into the yard,
and a village boy, standing in good spirits,
came to ask her to be his wife.
The mother liked the young farmer's carriage very much.
Only the proud daughter finished him off
by saying,
And if you came around me in a carriage
and gave me a ring
with little stones that twinkled like the stars in the sky,
I would not go with you.
The farmer's wife took notice of these lofty words
and was saddened by then.
But the mother comforted the daughter.
On the second night the mother woke up again,
took the rosary
and prayed for the healing of her daughter even more intimately.
Suddenly she laughed aloud in her sleep.
What does the girl dream of?
thought the mother.
Is a father of ours still praying
and hanging the rosary again on the wall?
But can not fall asleep for a long time.
In the morning she asked the daughter while dressing up,
But daughter,
what did you dream of again?
You laughed aloud in your sleep.
What did I dream of, mother?
Ay,
I dreamed that a man came around me in a silver carriage
and gave me a golden headband.
And when I came to church,
people did not look as much at the mother of God
as they looked at me.
Oh, what are you talking about, child?
What lofty dreams!
Pray, daughter, pray
that you do not fall into temptation.
So she told the mother.
The daughter alone knocked on the door and went out
not to have to listen to the mother's sermon.
The same day a caravan of lords drove into the yard
and noble people came to offer her as a wife to Lord Brod.
The mother appreciated this for an honor.
But the daughter made her proud by saying,
And if you came around me in a silver carriage
and brought me a golden headband,
I would not marry you anyway.
The bridesmaids recommended themselves.
Only the mother cried out to the daughter and complained,
Oh, daughter,
let go of pride.
Pride tastes like hell.
The daughter laughed at her, however.
In the third night the daughter slept next to the mother.
The mother alone could not fall asleep before worries
and did not give the rosary out of her hand.
Then the daughter opened a bright smile in her sleep.
God!
the mother called angrily.
What is dreaming the unhappy child again?
And pray,
pray until the light of day for the healing of her daughter.
But daughter, what did you dream again tonight?
You had a bright smile in your sleep,
she asked the daughter as she awoke.
Do you want to get me out again?
the daughter said.
Tell me, tell me,
the mother rushed into her.
Well, I dreamed she came around me in a golden carriage
and brought me a garment of loud gold.
And when I came to church,
people were looking only at me.
The mother wrung her hands,
but the daughter jumped out of bed,
took her clothes and ran to dress herself outside,
so that she would not have to listen to the mother's warning.
The same day three carriages drove into the courtyard.
A copper one, a silver one and a golden one.
In front of the first there were two,
in front of the second four,
in front of the third even eight proud horses.
From the copper and silver carriage
noble boys jumped with red trousers and green caps and dolmens.
But from the golden carriage a handsome gentleman jumped
in a garment of loud gold.
Everyone went straight into the house
and the young gentleman asked the mother for the daughter.
Oh, if only we were worthy of such luck!
the mother apologized.
But the daughter thought to herself when she saw the gentleman,
This is the same one I dreamed of!
and hurried into the room to tie the bouquet.
When she had tied the bouquet and handed it to the bridegroom as a gift,
she received a ring of stones from him
that twinkled like the stars in the sky,
a golden headband and a garment of loud gold.
She hurried into the room to dress herself
and the mother, worried, asked the bridegroom,
And what kind of bread will you offer my daughter?
We have the bread of copper, of silver and of gold.
She can choose what she likes.
replied the bridegroom.
The mother was surprised by all this,
but the daughter had no worries and asked for nothing.
When she had put on the golden garment,
she was very beautiful.
The bridegroom held her by the hand and they immediately went to the wedding,
without the daughter asking for the blessing of the mother,
without her saying goodbye to the girl according to old custom.
The mother, tormented by fear,
stood at the threshold and prayed for the couple.
When the wedding was over,
the bride and the bridegroom sat in the golden carriage,
the bride and groom in the silver and the copper,
and so they drove on,
without the daughter saying goodbye to the mother.
They drove and drove,
until they reached a rock,
in which there was a big hole,
as big as a city gate.
Suddenly the horses were steering into this gate.
When they were inside,
a terrible earthquake came,
so that the rock collapsed behind them.
They were in the dark.
The bride was shaking violently and was afraid.
But the groom said to her,
Don't be afraid and just wait.
It will be bright.
It will be beautiful.
And now mountain men came running from all sides,
with red trousers and green caps,
burning torches in their hands,
and they all greeted their lord,
the metal ruler,
and shone for him.
Only then did the bride-to-be see
whom she was following,
whom she had as her husband.
But this did not bother her.
From the dark rock they reached
enormous forests and mountains,
which reached high up into the sky.
But all the spruce, fir, beech,
all the mountains were made of lead.
When they had the mountains behind them,
an earthquake came again,
so that everything behind them collapsed.
From the leaden mountains they reached
a beautiful plain,
where everything shone splendidly,
and in the middle of the plain stood a golden castle,
lined with silver and precious stones.
The metal ruler led his bride into the castle
and told her that all this was hers too.
With joy and admiration,
the young woman looked at all the wealth.
When she had looked around,
she was tired,
and she liked to see the mountain men
putting up a golden table.
She felt hungry.
So she sat down at the table.
They served food made of copper,
silver and gold.
Everyone ate,
but the bride could not enjoy it.
So she asked the bridegroom for a piece of bread.
With pleasure, my lord,
said the metal ruler,
and immediately he ordered the mountain man
to bring a piece of copper bread.
One thing went well,
and he brought a piece of copper bread.
Only the bride could not eat of it.
The metal ruler ordered to bring a piece of silver bread.
They brought a piece of silver bread.
Only the bride could not eat of it.
He ordered to bring a piece of golden bread.
Only the bride could not eat of it.
With pleasure, my lord,
but we have no other bread,
said the metal ruler.
Then the bride saw that it was bad with her,
and tears broke.
Only the metal ruler said to her,
It does not help that you cry and complain.
You knew what kind of bread you were eating.
As you chose,
so you have it now.
And so it was, and not otherwise.
What happened
could not be undone.
The bride had to stay under the earth
and was tormented by hunger
because she only asked for gold.
Only three days a year are you allowed
to go out into the sunlight,
because the metal ruler
opens the gates to the treasures of the earth.
That is on the three days of fasting.
There he goes out
and begs for bread.
