The treacherous servant
by Joseph Wenzig
He was a very rich,
and at the same time a very kind man.
A true benefactor of the people.
Those who sought help from him were never rejected.
His joy consisted in helping the needy and the unhappy.
He had no inheritance,
for which he could have gathered wealth,
and so he used all his money for good works.
Such a good work,
and not the last one,
was also that he had a strong bridge built
over the wide and flowing river,
which flowed not far from his castle
and prevented human traffic.
He was happy about the construction
and often went to see it
and to encourage the workers to work hard.
When the bridge was finished,
he sent one of his servants
so that he would hear
what the travellers would judge of him
and report to him.
The servant stood on the bridge
and listened to the speeches of the passers-by.
Some gave his lord a tour,
that he had spent so much money on a thing
that it was of no use to him.
But most appreciated him
that through the construction of the bridge
such a great good deed had been achieved
for the whole area.
Finally, two nobles came there
with long white beards in pilgrim's clothes.
One of them said,
What kind of noble man must that be,
who sacrifices such an important part of his wealth
to do a service for his fellow men?
For what? said the other.
The builder of this bridge
deserves a great reward for his work.
How could we reward him according to merit?
asked the first.
His wife may give birth to a son
to whom all powers are given
and whose wishes should be fulfilled by all.
said the second,
and with these words they proceeded.
The servant who heard the speech
was not surprised.
And since he had a bad heart,
he immediately thought
how he could take advantage of it
to harm his lord.
When he came home,
he told his lord
the various judgments of the travelers.
In terms of the pilgrim, however,
he allowed himself an abominable lie.
He told how the two nobles
would have regretted
that such a noble benefactor of the people
should experience such an unheard misfortune.
For his wife will give birth to a son
whom she will soon kill after birth
and eat up.
The good lord was extremely saddened by this
and showed no joy
when his holy wife revealed to him
that she hoped to God
that her bilateral wish would come true,
that they would have a heir.
The holy wife really gave birth to a son,
and although the father cheered,
the unhappy prophecy
still clouded his joy.
For as a part of the same,
namely that a heir had been born to him,
had fulfilled,
so he certainly had to wait
for the fulfillment of the other part.
In doing so, the treacherous servant
took the opportunity
to carry out his miserable prophecy.
One day,
the favorable time he longed for,
he stood up in the evening
in the presence of his wife,
knowing that she would already be fast asleep.
Here he took the child
that lay next to the mother in a cradle
and carried it to his wife,
whom he ordered
to harness on the street.
Then he returned,
caught a rooster in the yard,
cut off his head with the kitchen knife
and smeared the empty cradle
and the mother's bed with his blood.
He put the knife in the cradle.
After he had done this,
he hurried to his wife,
and both went with the stolen child
into the wide world.
The next morning,
when the master had carried out
the task of his mistress,
who was still asleep,
he saw the cradle empty
and saw a terrible horror.
He believed that the second part
of the unfortunate prophecy
had come true.
Angry with pain,
and as he held his mistress
for the guilty one,
he pierced the sleeping one
with his sword,
so that she died on the spot.
But as soon as he had completed the task,
his blood cooled down.
He began to think about everything
and felt remorse.
For he had loved his mistress very much,
and without her,
no happiness on earth would bloom for him.
Then he began to mourn his fate.
Suddenly, however,
despair seized him.
He fell like a madman
out of the castle,
and there was nothing left to hear from him.
When the servants found the master dead,
and the master
showed himself nowhere,
they all clashed together
in the castle and scattered.
The castle stood empty
and was gradually
in ruins.
Meanwhile, the unfaithful servant
had carried the stolen child
to distant lands with his wife.
And as it grew,
and gradually came to his senses,
he knew how to
instruct the boy as his supposed father.
He forced him violently
to wish this and that,
which was always fulfilled.
So the traitor
became a great rich man
and lived in abundance
and splendor.
His wife, however,
who knew nothing of the secret,
could not wonder enough
whereher her husband took all this
and often dared
to discover it in him.
He refused for a long time
until he finally could not resist
her request and
entrusted everything to her.
This was heard by the boy
who was already twelve years old
and he found out
what origin he was
and what miracle gift
he possessed.
His pleasure was great
that another was his father
than the one who often
tortured him so mercilessly
and he decided to punish him
according to merit.
By means of his gift,
he made every of his wishes
come true,
took his servant
to a black dog
and went with him
to look for his father's castle.
He wandered around the world
for a long time
without being able
to find his birthplace.
It did not occur to him
that he only needed
to wish to be at his destination,
because where does a boy
in his age have enough sense?
But he made use of this
to order his dog
to give spanish
instead of food.
And when the people of the village
wondered that the dog
should eat spanish,
he replied,
if the mother could feed her child,
the dog can also eat spanish.
After a long wandering
he finally reached a wide
and winding stream
over which a magnificent bridge led.
At the end of the bridge
there was a newly built inn
where the boy,
exhausted from the journey,
rested.
There he had a rich meal prepared.
However, he ordered his dog
to throw spanish.
And when the servant wondered
that the dog should eat spanish,
he replied as usual,
if the mother could feed her child,
the dog can also eat spanish.
Ay!
said the servant.
This happened twelve years ago,
not far from here in a castle
where a mother
ate her child,
on which her husband
murdered her in anger
and then disappeared
without anyone knowing where.
I served in the castle
and everything was astonished
about the incident.
The mother was buried
in a remote place
because of her actions.
This was prophesied
at the birth of the child.
The boy happily heard these words
because they discovered
that this was his paternal seat.
He led himself to the grave of the mother,
knelt down there
and shed bitter tears.
Oh, you would be unhappy in life,
mother,
who I did not know
and who suffered so innocently!
he cried with overwhelming emotion.
And look!
The mother fell to the ground
and a holy woman
rose out of the grave,
pressed the boy on her chest
and called him son.
The boy had,
without knowing it,
by the spoken wish
brought his mother to life
and was now like of senses
and could not understand
what I was doing.
But soon he came to his senses,
hugged the mother tenderly
and sank into his bliss.
If only the father were here
and shared our joy with us!
he cried out.
And soon
a man stood there
of city-like appearance
and friendly appearance,
only the heavy courage
like a cloud shadowed his face.
It was the boy's father,
who held his child for dead
and, out of pain over the
practiced murder,
wandered around the world
without finding rest.
Now everything
was clear to him
and the desire of the
overjoyed was unspeakable.
They returned to their castle,
which quickly put the wishes
of the son into his previous state
and began
to live a new life.
The son transformed
the treacherous servant
into a human,
who had been torn
alive by horses
by the fateful judgment.
The father became
again a benefactor
of his fellow man,
until after many years
he died a natural death.
But the son used
after the example
of the noble father
the power given to him
only for the benefit of others
and left behind
the rest of the world.
