The Devil's Help
by Josef Haltrich
Once, a poor farmer brought wood from the forest
and got stuck in a puddle,
so that he could not get out of the spot.
An unknown man came up to him and said,
I would like to help you out of trouble,
if you promise to give me the newest thing,
which is now in your house.
After twenty years you should deliver it to me.
The farmer thought about the nine wooden spoons,
which he had recently bought,
and promised without further ado what he asked for.
And immediately a written contract was set up.
Then the stranger pulled out the cart and the cows,
and left.
When the farmer arrived at home,
he was frightened,
as if a son had been born to him at that time.
He immediately realized that he had written his child to the evil man.
Immediately he went to his lord priest
and confessed his sins to him.
He comforted him and said,
He only draws your son in all virtue and humility,
so the evil one will not be able to do anything to him.
The farmer promised this and did it conscientiously.
But he could not hide his grief from the little one for long.
He prayed and always asked,
Father, why are you so sad?
And one day the old man told him everything.
Don't worry, father,
said the boy.
The devil will not be able to do anything to me.
The lord priest will already tell me how to keep myself.
When the boy was twenty years old,
he went to the priest and asked him for advice
on how to start with the devil.
The priest said he should always pray,
because the devil could not stand that.
Then the boy set out for hell,
because he did not want to wait for the devil to pick him up.
When he had gone far,
he saw only once a big tree with golden fruits
and below it a horny and heavily armed man.
At first he was frightened.
But when he saw that he did not move,
he dared to go closer.
Then the man told him his life story.
He was a great robber.
But now he was bound under this tree.
Each of the golden fruits was one of his sins.
But under the tree were the great treasures
that he had acquired through robbery and murder.
Now he had to stand guard for so long
and could not die for so long,
until a pure and innocent young man
of twenty years had prayed for his soul.
Are you the one, so pray for me,
and if I am no longer,
then lift from this place the great treasures
that are then free from the curse.
The young farmer promised to do all this with a willing heart
and walked on and finally reached hell.
There he began to pray
and went so praying into the devil's workshop.
When the devil heard the prayer,
everyone fled.
And as the young man came closer to them,
they withdrew to the farthest corner of hell.
But here, too, they did not feel safe.
So they made a deal and asked each other
who the dangerous man could be
and what they should do next.
An old devil of the contract,
who he had made a deal with the farmer twenty years ago,
said,
The stranger is none other than his stupid young farmer
whom I had betrayed to his father twenty years ago.
Unfortunately, I have not thought about it since then,
and so he has grown up in the power of God.
Wait alone, I will get him out of our necks right away.
So the old devil took a heart
and went to the young man,
threw the contract to him and said,
You can go home with it right away.
I'll give it to your father.
The young man did not say that twice,
because he had had a fit
when he saw the many masonry tools,
the tongs and pots full of seething oil
and the hellish fire
and heard the groaning and clattering of teeth of the damned.
He quickly took the contract and returned.
But the devils rejoiced when they were rid of him.
When the young man returned to the big tree praying,
he fell down only once,
and the damned man fell to the ground,
and he saw two piles of ashes at their place.
He groaned now, as the man had told him,
and found the great treasures.
So he went home.
His parents were very happy to see him again.
He gave one part of the treasures to the priest
to thank him for the good teachings,
and he gave the other part to the church.
He kept only the third part for himself and his parents.
But he was a wealthy man,
and his wealth grew more and more
and he continued to inherit children and grandchildren.
Because they, too, were all wise and god-fearing people.
