old Zoo nature trail so what's this so
today
we're going to the zoo nice now this Zoo
there's a lot of history about this suit
was opened in 1923 and closed in
mysterious circumstances in the late
1930s early 1940s and has been abandoned
ever since
1930s 1940s Zoo love it so let's take a
look so a zoo now am I right in saying
that this was a uh animal zoo an animal
zoo had bear deer well that was kind of
a joke because what other Zoo is there
well I don't know we've been going to
the cities today
and the one thing about because I know
we did also did the abandoned zoo in
Griffith Park in LA uh-huh the trees
I just just something about the trees
that always kind of seemed to be similar
I just I love the look of them
so I believe we are supposed to be on
the lookout for
there's the medallions right yeah 10 of
them okay and they'll show what we're in
what enclosure but they're not all easy
to find you have to look for them okay A
little treasure hunt
it is
I think this is a really cool idea
because I mean
still make it an old trail because it
was people love to walk this anyways and
keep it open as a trail for people to
still enjoy nature
and get a glimpse into what this used to
be yeah
and just up here you can see all the the
rock walls so that was also some of the
zoo enclosures up that side
which we'll look at let's go up to the
top first because I believe that there's
a lion enclosure up here
yeah so we'll go up there later
there's also something there but I don't
know whether or not that's a trail but
it's definitely oh actually yes it is
bread oh yeah
well
the steps going down oh yeah and then
you can see a little Trail Meandering
off the side now it is snake season and
there are copperheads
there's also scorpions
and other creepy crawlies that we don't
want to get bit by yeah so stick to the
trails
and keep your eyes open
so what's this okay there's a little LT
Loop trial
oh okay sorry guys down here oh I see
and then it Loops up and comes back down
all right
this is where the Lion's meant to be so
we've got to look for the lion Medallion
okay
this is really cute isn't it it is I
like this
it's uh it is starting to warm up I'm
gonna have to take my jacket off here in
a minute
so
I wonder if this was just a natural
Creak back then
well I must admit I wasn't expecting
this no I am getting a little bit of
flashbacks to like seek a hollow
I think also a little bit because I'm
sweating so much right now
it's a bit humid yeah
that's just windy Trail
so keep your eye open for The Medallion
yeah
mind your step
all right I'm getting a bit turned hang
on
this is the bridge I yeah I do recognize
this part now okay and it goes
straight up that way
so this has got to be I would say that's
gotta be the enclosure up here
so now we gotta see if we can find The
Medallion
there's like little Trails leading all
over them I know they just zigzag all
over but it's beautiful the Moss all
over the rocks and let's face it this is
a great place to bring your kids and
have a you know family of
fun you know trying to find the
medallions going through all the trails
right it's a it's a little treasure hunt
okay left or right
uh left
and I am absolutely determined to find
this medallion
well we don't even know whether or not
we're in the right place to find The
Medallion
and this is meant to be the Lions
according to that map but he did say
that that was old and uh a new map is on
order yeah but I would think if it's a
mountain lion enclosure of these rocks
seems to simulate more of a mountain
lion environment and if they use the
natural
lay of the land this would be perfect
you showed an app
in Africa oh
not a mountain lion you know one with a
big Mane yeah okay well then we're on
the wrong continent
oh
see because I was thinking this they've
got little shelves and perches
but
I've had enough I gotta take my jacket
off then it's time to get serious about
this
Stephen
[Music]
Stephen let's go there's lots and more
to see come on
no I'm not leaving until I find it
[Music]
gotta be here I know it's here
why are you just sitting there
we're not finding it we're in the wrong
place
so we'll try this Trail now
listen
I don't know what happened back there
but I do know this
I think that'll be the last time
I can't can't keep sorry I can't take
that so seriously
so what's up here
I have no idea of big steps
oh it goes
right left or straight straight up uh
more of these
walk around up to it
because there's a sign up there it's
another that looks like an enclosure
that is an inclusion okay up uh up first
yeah
all right well there's an enclosure with
a little hole Yeah but
no Medallion no and it's not gonna
bother me
it's fine I'm sure I wonder what this is
because it's kind of I mean
you've got poles poles
yeah and there was fencing so this
wall here I think that used to be
another oh yeah there's some steps you
can just barely make out so that would
have been the sidewalk
there originally
so this would have been an enclosure
that would have been an enclosure and
you would have walked along there
yeah
huh all right but I want to get up to
those top ones for sure so I guess we'll
carry on see if it leads up there
yeah I'm just gonna check up here what
are you doing
[Music]
oh oh no we've got to go this way
foreign
we've got a better view of this as well
okay so what's up here this is oh oh all
right so steps going off to the right is
kind of overload here
I've just seen something
okay so we were over there looking for
the
where those two people are climbing on
the Rocks just below that there's two
caves
oh really uh-huh
here's the enclosures
with some of the fencing still left
tiny enclosures aren't they I wonder
what they were for
I don't know
[Music]
somebody's built a fire pit up here
[Music]
yeah they're just ah
found a medallion okay
this was cat a lion mountain lion so
this was the mountain this is the
mountain lion enclosure
so we were just climbing all over rocks
for nothing
well
Shame about the coffee graffiti
it is
see so for a mountain lion not very big
is it no because this would have been
that's the one fenced up part this is
the other side here so
that's one thing I don't like about zoos
I'm not a great Zoo person I'd prefer
wildlife parks as opposed to zoos
because I find that the enclosures are
just so small yeah
that's just my personal opinion right
and don't get me wrong I think Sam zoos
are fantastic especially when they do um
you know like Rehabilitation or breed
and then put them back in the wild yeah
so
if there was a medallion in there there
might be a medallion in this one I
wonder if I wonder if this was the all
the mountain lion enclosure well why
would it be separated
[Music]
well that's this is definitely the same
enclosure because uh
their home goes from side to side
okay see a medallion anywhere though no
there wasn't one in there
and then this one you can kind of that
doesn't really
go back anywhere
it just is it is a big area but let's
see
look
wild flowers
they'll bite you that's what you come to
the zoo to see
I'm gonna have a little look in here
so pretty amazing so this was built in
1923
yeah
and again they used the natural
landscape and built around it which is
there might be a medallion I know how
excited you'll get
I'm Italian like I said I don't uh
I could just imagine I mean I'm enjoying
this now but like as a kid
oh you just stepped in the wild flower
oh my
did you hear them scream at me yeah I
did
terrifying
oh
[Applause]
I don't know whether or not there's a
medallion in there should I go in just
mine that no spiders jump on my head
yeah I got well I got a better view from
up here I don't see anything in there at
all
like I said this must be around the same
kind of enclosures would be
I'm a dying in each you know how zoos
they separate everything by animal
see now if this was also mountain lion
and this was still part of the other
cage then this is actually a pretty
decent size enclosure
cool spot to hang out
but though this looks like a
a trail path
because they're steps
or if this is for the behind the scenes
zookeepers when they come to feed them
and
and whatnot
yeah because we're back out
[Music]
[Music]
in all stairs so I think there's going
to be medallions up here well there was
ten one has been stolen so there's nine
left
we found two
will they bother you not to find all of
them
I'd like to find all of them I'm just
intrigued
he wouldn't bother me at all
[Music]
[Applause]
so this is not a cage no
this is a house
and it looks like it's caught fire well
it has caught fire
oh wow
kitchen sink
yes simply hot cold water hmm drain
I like the tile work
fireplace
it's a nice size another doorway here
yeah
oh what a shame that sir caught fire I
wonder if that was arson
now
old school insulator in there no trip
would be complete
without a trip to the low well there's a
shower in there
how that's pretty neat
it looks like there's several more so
maybe
one of the zookeepers or the owner
lived here could be
there's another one up there
[Music]
and there's another one over there as
well so two more three more that I can
see oh wow it's like exploring Little
Ghost Town yeah it's another three four
there's one back there too a little shed
these are these ones are in good shape
here
it's very cool in here oh very nice
this is really cute so this must have
been
um workers cabins yeah that's what I
would think again nice fireplace little
kitchen
Diddy but I mean what more do you need
it's bigger than the one we've got yeah
and you see the lead paint
oh yeah so these would have been
abandoned then in the 40s I would
imagine after the
the zoo is abandoned and there was back
here it's got to be no trip yeah so
closet
shower
and you guessed it no trip would be
complete
and it's still intact that's nice to see
look at this is uh
all concrete cement
oh wow
that's really cool yeah
so go to the next one then yeah
now I wasn't expecting this no
animal feeds
um possibly because there's not much in
there
except for the metal roof it's got the
can is kind of made like a zebra yeah
camouflage
but again this is a bigger one and a
nice front porch here
so
again I mean the roof is nice and intact
pretty much except for back there
and then again front room bedroom
bedroom bedroom this will be the front
room of the fireplaces little closet
water closet here pretty much identical
to the other this is an ensuite yeah
nice big windows
very cool
and a tiny little kitchen with a
back door
is there a medallion in there
[Music]
is that part of a piano
what it uh yeah singer piano oh it is
yeah from Chicago
it's cool
virtually identical I guess kitchen
one room smaller
and a toilet so this would be difficult
to that first one yeah well this would
be bedroom come living room yeah
yep hot water heater back there a hot
water heater water heater and for all
those car people out there
I know what this one is yeah it's a Ford
it's got to be I believe I believe
you're correct on that one
I'm sure I'll be told otherwise in the
comments
I don't want to go too far back because
of it's overgrown this side and I don't
want to yeah get caught by a snake there
are very that's very tall grass over
here too so I won't go and look at this
Old Wagon
I wonder if they did oh no I was going
to say I wonder if they did wagon rides
around the zoo but it's too uneven and
there's too many steps yeah so it's not
very good for strollers
push chairs as we call them
but how cool
and uh
just a couple more houses
this has got to be
part of the zoo still yeah well this
looks like the last one that we can
explore look at this old sofa
sofa or beta
get up and then the uh
barbecue outside and oh it's nice in
here oh look at the tiles
I yeah I like these kind of tiles
because the thing about these is they
keep the cool in the summer which it's
nice and cool in here but then also they
keep in the heat for the winter time
that's an old single sewing machine
yeah singer
look at that
it says office
okay so I wonder if this was the office
to the park then like the main head
office I don't know but there used to be
some sort of breakfast bar here
fireplace kitchen
but it's got bedroom furniture in here
closet and a loo
no
well this door yes
does that go through here's the here's
where the loo was okay they're the
Wall's gone yeah there was a wall here
yeah
I don't know what that is
because there's your shower
[Music]
hot water heater and then I guess this
room maybe this was the office
I don't know it's because you wouldn't
have yeah that mess that's the front
door I think that was the office and
then this was closed off bedroom kitchen
Lou
hmm strange
so we found it something else yep it's a
little pool so
obviously this is gonna be for fish
I mean there wouldn't be anything else
that would possibly
well because it's so tiny yeah
well
I was uh stairs
so
ah
flamingos
that's the Flamingo pool
so I don't like zoos because the
enclosures are too small
that'll make a lick of sense
huh
well
three so stairs going down there I would
say that goes back to the carpool yeah I
think that grows because that's what we
can see Tonto right there
okay so shall we continue
we'll go on the word cougar Trail I like
cougars
[Laughter]
okay so here's cougar Rock
scene on top 1968.
all right well that's kind of not
guess what guess who found another
Medallion
and you didn't I found the flamingo one
so this is it yeah
[Music]
no cage though no
what goes through here
thank you
a steep drop off and a road
oh and there's the dam
so here we are
the last piece
so this is the largest swimming pool
it's the largest or it was the largest
cement swimming pool in the world so
they say but definitely in America I
don't know how big it was or is
um and even though the Zoo closed in the
40s the swimming pool was still open
right through until the 1970s yeah and
then it closed down and now it's stocked
with fish so the kids can come here and
go fishing right now why did the zoo
actually close I don't think we said
that mysterious circumstances so one of
the Bears was poisoned oh
um
if you dear died mysteriously as well
boy it's windy on the water
get seasick
so that wraps it up for the zoo
and the swimming pool nice and the Bonus
Goes Down
cool so what's next on the the old
Horizon
campsite dinner seeing as we've been
here for six hours yeah and
yeah
that's it all right
[Music]
there you go that does it for the
abandoned Zoo
and that was a long day and the Ghost
Town
yeah it wasn't a bonus it wasn't really
a ghost town
um there is actually an abandoned
um golf course near here so we are
wondering whether or not those buildings
were part of the golf course but we
don't know yeah we have no idea and a
lot of this place is still overgrown in
some spots so the medallions were very
hard to spot I think we came across four
four out of there is ten the guy told me
that one's already been stolen
um let me think a few more have yeah we
found remnants of where we think they
should have been yeah but uh but it was
a fun day and definitely worth coming
here definitely if you're in Texas and
you're in this area then you definitely
need to come especially if you've got
kids great day for exploring oh yeah
just good to be outside in nature
walking around you're walking through
history again and the way they've done
it with the trail system is just
brilliant love it so on that note get
out there go and explore put another pin
in the atlas and we will see you on our
next adventure
bye
