It's a new year, the weather is getting better, the water is warming up so a new diving season is
upon us and this means new gear. We went to Boe Dusseldorf to check out all the new gear for
this season. Let's dive in. If we had to point out one winner of the show it definitely would have
been Maris. They had a great stand, a lot of new gear and a lot of staff running around explaining
everything to divers. It was just really impressive. A few years ago Maris acquired Revo which is a key
player in the rebreather market but more on a technical side. Together with them they hope to
bring the rebreather to the recreational diver. Maris is planning to ship out the Horizon around May
and you need special training to dive with it. This training can only be obtained through SSI for the
time being but they plan to circle it out to all agencies. A non-decompression model will set you
back around $5,000 and a decompression model $5,500. This is without the training needed.
New on the computer front from Maris is the Genius and this is set to replace the Icon.
It has Bluetooth connectivity, it has a new algorithm and one of the biggest downsides of
the Icon was the low or weak battery and they said to improve that and you should be able to
dive with it for 40 dives now. Another thing which caught our eye is a new Flexa Z-Term suit
and it has a very special zipper which runs all over your body and they designed it this way so
you can take off and put on the suit without any help. We couldn't try the suit on the show so no
final verdict on that. As one of the very few manufacturers Maris also announced a new regulator.
It's the 82 Epic. This regulator is certified to 600 feet and can even go to 1200 feet. You don't
see that many Maris regulators used by the technical community and maybe this can be the
turning point. Moving on to Aqualung which has a bit of a quieter year this year. Last year they
introduced new fins, new regulators, new computers. So this year it's quite impossible to do this two
years in a row. So it's definitely a bit quieter on the Aqualung side. All things new with Aqualung
are computer related. They brought a necessary update to the E750 which is the E770R. The E750
was quite a disaster and the new one should salvage this reputation. It looks a bit better but
not quite on the level of other computers we have seen so far. But we have to do a full review before
we can do a verdict. Also the E200 got an update. It is named the E200C now. The C stands for
connectivity and they added bluetooth onto it so you can set settings and get your dives onto
your smartphone. And this is a welcome update for the computer. Much like Aqualung, Scubapro is
taking a gap year. Not much new exciting stuff except for one thing. The big thing on the
Scubapro stand was the Galileo HUD and this is the heads-up display version of the Galileo computer.
We reviewed it before and it had a glare problem. Well they did fix it. The heads-up display goes
onto your mask and you can look through the glass into the computer. We had just a little bit of
time with it because it was hugely popular. But what we have seen it looked quite good and it was
easy readable. But there are still some question marks about how you can operate it and if it
actually works in real life. Last year Suunto introduced the Aeon Core and they are still
building on that software. Because now they are releasing the Suunto D5 and this is actually the
watch size of the Aeon Core. It looks quite good. Color display quite big. Maybe in the future they
get smartwatch functionalities. And then we found another thing on the on the show which caused a
bit of a debate. It's kind of a casing for your mobile phone. You can take it underwater. You can
still operate the phone and there are even an outlet for headsets so you can listen to music
on the water. For me it sounds awesome because I would love to listen to some music but
other people will say oh we go on the water to get rid of all this and I don't want my phone
with me when I'm diving. So what's your take on it? Let us know in the comments.
