the cannibalistic Bandits an 18th century Chapel tells the chiling tale of Chovalley,
Clovelly being home to a tribe of fictional cannibalistic Bandits The Story Goes that
the notorious Greg and his extended family were eventually Tracked Down by blood hounds and met
fire end in the 11th century. Clovelly was owned by none other than William the Conqueror himself
the king later gifted The Village to his wife Matilda of Landers England's first crown queen
the literary and artistic influence Clovelly has left its mark on many famous literary and artistic
figures Charles Kingsley Charles Dickens, William Turner and Rex Whistler have all been influenced
by this charming Village. Charles Kingsley lived here, Dickens found inspiration here,
Turner immortalized it in his paintings and Whistler frequently featured it in his work. now
let's step into visit a silk shop that sells teils featuring Rex whistler's drawings from 1932 and
silk by Ann Jarvis, Lobster carves bags all hand designed and perfect for a souvenir we can hear
from the owner himself well my name's Bill Jarvis and we my wife and I Ann Jarvis run the silk shop.
We've been in Devon for 39 years and the main thing we do is print on silk and pure wool we
buy other lovely bits in so people might like them but we work in this little Haven and it's lovely
what does it feel like living here our daughter lives here she lives in the bottom in the harbour
in the oldest Cottage uh crazy Kates we live a little out to the lighthouse and that's remote
windy but very lovely we go to the church in Clovelly and there's we have an association
one with a village nearby where we lived .And now let's meet the posh Ann Jarvis definitely not we
lived in Brad before we used to just come across we only came here really to set up our Workshop
well we moved from London I was a freelance designer we needed somewhere really where we
could print like on the table here and have a bit of space and meet people and sell people and so we
came in here nearly 30 years. In the summer it's very busy in the winter we don't do a bit of work
in the winter as well for the summer season. Our daughter is involved too it's it's great fun. The
Summer's busy this building is cold and the winter is new but when we're printing we have the heaters
on you see Point Clovelly was for our business having decided to move from London to the country
just to bring our children up in those days just in the countryside would be good so I think in a
way moving in here was purely because we were so isolated where we were we were printing but we
were doing shows away and from here the distance was especially in those days there are no trains
and things so the journey was bad and the roads were bad coming in here was was an absolute Joy
really it is good because suddenly you're meeting the world well over the time we've been here we
produced different scarves and princess Anne took away one of our scarves down along and
later Princess then but now Queen Camilla took one of our dévore. these drawings of the village were
done by a famous artist called Rex Whistler and he was a friend of the Hamlin family that owned
the village and he did these drawings in 1932 we found them have permission to put them back
on screen and the wonderful thing is it's just the same it hasn't changed at all as we Meander
through the village we rest our tired feet on benches cut along the way each house has its own
Sledge The Village's unique mode of Transport. Clovelly is not just a tourist attraction it's
