Thank you for watching and for choosing to learn Italian with me!
Hello everyone and welcome back, or welcome to my channel, if this is the first lesson you watch here on Learn Italian with Gretia.
In today's video we see together some daily uses of the word then.
It is one of the most used words in the Italian language and if you have seen some of my videos,
you will also have noticed that I say this word very often.
So we will see together five uses of the word then in everyday conversation, in everyday life.
The first use we see together is that of then to start a speech.
It is a very common way to start a speech in informal and sometimes even formal conversation,
it depends on the situations and it depends on the context.
For example, when I say, then, today we see together this topic.
The second use is instead a filling use, that is,
the word then is used to fill empty spaces and therefore to better collect thoughts.
I'll give you an example, we're talking about a book and I want to quote a sentence or refer to a sentence from the book.
So while I look for the page I say, then, then, then, let's see a little.
And at that moment, while I say the word then, I'm also collecting thoughts to continue the speech started.
Let's say these two uses are quite similar,
but they are also different at the same time and so I thought they deserved two distinct points in this list.
The third use is very informal and is synonymous with then, if I ask someone,
then, what did you decide? I'm asking, then, what did you decide?
It is a fairly informal use to get the interlocutor to make a decision, to answer a question, etc.
The fourth use, on the other hand, is much more grammatical and is the use of then as an adverb of time in the past.
In this case, then means at that time.
If I say, then things were different, I'm saying, at that time things were different from today.
It is an adverb of time that refers to the past and means at that time.
Let's see now the last use of then.
We can also use then with the meaning of consequence for this reason and also in this case.
I'll give you an example.
Someone tells me, Stefania will come to the party.
And I answer, well, then I don't come.
In this my answer, then, can mean, consequently I don't come.
Because Stefania is coming, I don't come.
For this reason, precisely because Stefania is coming to the party, I don't come.
Evidently we quarreled.
In this case, since Stefania is coming to the party, I don't come.
So, these meanings are contained in a single word, which is then.
Stefania is coming to the party, so I don't come.
So, let's recap the five uses of then that we saw together today.
Then as an empty word to start a speech.
Then as a filler to take time or collect ideas to continue talking.
Then in a question as a synonym of then, to kick someone to answer, to give us an answer, to make a decision.
Then as an adverb of time in the past with the meaning of at that time.
And finally, then with the meaning of, consequently, for this reason, in this case.
I hope this lesson is useful to you.
Today we saw the five most common uses in everyday conversation of the word then,
which, as I told you at the beginning of this lesson, is a very used word.
I don't think there is an Italian who doesn't use this word.
If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.
I greet you for the moment and see you in the next lesson.
See you soon, bye!
