Kamala Harris to get security protection from California troopers.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris will receive security protection from the California Highway Patrol after her Secret Service detail was revoked by President Donald Trump last week. Before leaving office, former President Joe Biden signed an order to extend Harris' protection beyond the usual six months typically allotted to former vice presidents. California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have reportedly arranged to provide dignitary protection for Harris. A former Vice President Kamala Harris is reportedly set to receive security protection from the
California Highway Patrol.
It comes as President Trump abruptly revoked her Secret Service protection last week.
Some call the move politically motivated amid this ongoing feud between the White House
and California state leaders.
News Nation's Nancy Liu is live outside the former VP's home in the Brentwood neighborhood
of L.A.
And Nancy reports of security protection from state troopers.
That's right, Nicole.
The Secret Service protection, it ended last night.
So here outside the former Vice President's home, we're seeing no sign of CHP right now,
but we are told that this is LAPD guarding the home and the former VP.
They are here in a number of unmarked vehicles.
Under federal protocol, former Vice Presidents and their families, they are granted Secret
Service protection for six months after leaving office.
But before leaving office himself, then-President Biden signed an order to extend the VP's protection
through July of 2026, reportedly at her request.
Well, late last week, President Trump revoked the extension starting today.
And upon hearing that, Governor Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass spoke to immediately
arrange dignitary protection for Harris.
Now, according to AP, a recent threat intelligence assessment by the Secret Service found no
red flags or evidence of a threat to the former Vice President.
It's unclear how long LAPD and or CHP will be providing this special protection or if
California taxpayers will be footing this bill.
The security change comes just weeks before Harris embarks on a lengthy book tour to promote
her new memoir, 107 Days.
The book comes out September 23rd and details her historically short presidential campaign.
Harris has 15 scheduled stops for the book tour, including in London and Toronto.
Now, in a statement, Mayor Bass called the change an act of revenge, putting the former's
VP life in danger.
Governor Newsom's office tells News Nation they do not comment on security arrangements.
And Nicole, we can tell you the Secret Service, they are back.
Agents are actively removing surveillance cameras as we speak.
All right.
And Nancy, the former VP's home has been targeted before, correct?
Yeah.
Nearly nine months ago, during the Palisades fire, when Harris was still in office as a
VP, this was an evacuation zone and under curfew.
Well, LAPD responded to a burglary call at the VP's home at around 430 in the morning.
Two men dressed in all black.
They were detained and they were questioned.
And the response also included the Secret Service.
The men were later released.
And it's not known whether they knew this home was the residence of Kamala Harris and
the former second gentleman, Doug Emhoff, who is now a visiting law professor at USC,
something that keeps them in L.A.
Nicole.
All right.
Nancy Liu live there in Brentwood.
Thank you.
