Philadelphia has been stuck [music] in a
snow drought. Four straight winters of
below average snowfall, but there is
some hope for snow lovers.
>> All right, this winter will likely
produce more snow than we've seen five
of the past six winters.
>> All right, so let's start with the
setup. Water temperatures in the
Ecuadorial Pacific are running below
average. That means a weak leninia has
formed and there's a good chance it'll
continue right through the winter. Now
historically leninia and snow have an
adverse relationship especially weak
leninas. 80% of winters past with weak
leninas have produced below average
snowfall in the mid-Atlantic. The
strength of this year's leninia matches
very closely the winter with the winter
of 201617
when 15 inches of snow fell in
Philadelphia. And that's really not that
much.
>> No. And that's a big driver even this
year as well as the main jetream is
going to lock the core of the cold air
up in the northern plains and over the
Great Lakes with mild and dry conditions
in the deep south. That puts us in
between a battle zone here between those
two air masses. Now, at times the
jetream is going to dip across the
eastern US, giving us glancing blows of
cold air, kind of similar to what we saw
earlier this month. This winter is going
to favor two particular storm tracks.
The first is those fastmoving clipper
systems that drive most of the moisture
to our north and pull up a burst of mild
air into our region. The second will
bring some bigger storms coming in from
the Tennessee Valley, then up through
the coastal plains of the Mid-Atlantic.
These often start as snow, but they
transition mostly to a wintry mix or
even just that cold plain old rain. Now,
one or two of these can turn into
norers, but likely too late for those
blockbuster snows storms for our region.
However, it could mean some really good
news for those ski resorts up in New
England with images like this.
>> Yeah, you know what we have to do? We
have to wax up our skis and we need to
take a road trip to New England. Let's
do it.
>> Do some skiing. So, putting this all
together gives us the key points for
this winter. Now, in the end,
temperatures should be pretty close to
average with several cold shots,
including early December, yielding to
milder breaks in between.
>> All right, expect a fairly active storm
track with these big temperature swings.
But most of the storms tracking over us
or to the north and west means the
threat of a big snowstorm with over foot
is very low.
>> It's kind of a bummer. But here's what
everyone cares about. How much snow will
we see? Well, with many mixed storms
predicted this year, it'll keep snowfall
amounts somewhat limited. So, we are
forecasting another below average winter
snowfall. 22 to 26 in the Lehigh Valley,
Philadelphia, 14 to 18 in and 8 to 12 in
at the Jersey Shore.
>> All right, Cesaly, even though this is a
below average snowfall prediction, many
will still consider this an active
winter season since we'll be dealing
with many winter storms, which means
we're going to be really busy.
[laughter] Although very few will be
pure snow stories, [music]
>> an active season, it's even more
important that you tune in to the ACU
weather forecast every night so you know
what's heading your way before it gets
here.
>> All right. So, if you're an avid skier
like the two of us, [laughter]
>> like I am,
>> then uh we might be disappointed.
>> Well, locally, but I think um New
England could get some really big
snowstorms. So, just head up to the
north if you want to get some skiing in.
And I need to get video if you go
skiing. [laughter]
>> I didn't say what I ski. I just said,
"All right, thank you so much."
