Go.
Good boy.
I don't know guys.
It's not much longer until you're going to fit in there.
Go ahead.
Get in there.
Zephyr.
Go.
Let's go.
Lincoln.
What do you think?
This is the big dog park.
I'm going to attack my sister.
So this is the reality that Zephyr is just too easy going with Lincoln and allows him
to get the upper hand too many times.
In reality, she needs to be a little more forceful and tell him no.
You need to tell him no, Zephyr.
Get some water.
All right, Zephyr.
Tell us what you really think about Lincoln.
Don't hold back.
You've had him around here for a month now.
Where are you going?
In the shade.
Do you want to be interviewed?
How about you, Diane?
What do you think of Lincoln?
He's a great dog.
Yeah, he's become a big part of our lives.
Puppies are a lot different.
We haven't had one in a very long time.
They have a lot of energy.
So we've had Lincoln for a month, and I think in that past month, we've made a big effort
to spend as much time with him as we can, especially the first couple of weeks.
I mean, we didn't really go anywhere or anything.
But we've been gradually getting him used to what's going to be his normal environment,
you know, traveling in the truck.
We've taken him for rides in the truck.
He goes to puppy classes.
We've taken him some places with us by himself.
And I don't know if we really haven't done the two of them yet in the truck.
No.
That would be next.
But he's really good at riding.
He usually just lays down and relaxes.
He doesn't even want to play with a toy.
Well, he is very inquisitive.
Yeah, yeah.
He'll get up on the center console and look around.
He wants to know, and he likes to keep an eye on us.
Right.
Make sure we're still there.
Plus, he's very smart.
He's picked up on things.
He knows his name.
He knows to go outside, to go potty.
And yeah, he's...
He's been pretty much housebroken since we brought him home.
Yeah, since we brought him home.
And yeah, so he likes the same treats that Zephyr likes,
so that's a good thing.
And they don't really argue about it.
No, about food they don't.
No.
And he likes to play with toys.
He likes to tear toys apart a little bit.
Which what puppy doesn't.
Right.
But we're kind of glad of that because pretty much all of our previous chows
have not liked to play with toys.
So this is kind of new for us, and he likes to do that.
Yeah, and it's fun to buy him toys.
Yeah.
But he had a second puppy class yesterday.
He did very well.
He has learned how to sit on command.
And yesterday we did a little bit of walking on the leash,
and he did that very well.
We're still working on it, and it's going to take some time to socialize him.
But he does well.
I mean, he really doesn't back away from people,
and he has let people pet him other than us.
So that's good.
Uh-oh.
Chows are not retrievers.
And like Diane said, we've been trying to socialize him,
so we get him out, we take him for a lot of walks, and gets to meet people.
He's still very, very shy, which is something I think we're going to work on.
It's actually this week's puppy class lesson was saying, they call it saying hello,
but getting him used to going up to things that he might not be comfortable with.
Don't know how that's going to work with a chow because chows are naturally,
what do I want to say, shy, aloof.
Yeah, they're aloof.
They're naturally aloof except for Zephyr here.
Except for Zephyr, who is extremely social.
But even her, she has to be told.
Yeah.
To go and say hello, and then she just loves it.
Right.
Actually, she'll sit down at the people's feet and let them pet her, pet her for as long as they want.
Right.
So we're hoping we can get Lincoln a little bit closer to that.
I don't expect him to be like Zephyr.
Every dog has their own personalities, but he's not as aloof as Monty was
because Monty would not go up to strangers at all.
He tends to go up and check them out, and then usually just backs away when someone tries to pet him.
Right.
So we're going to work on that and see if we can get him to be a little bit more comfortable.
I don't think we're going to get him perfect, but maybe a little bit more comfortable.
Right.
And in fact, today is Lincoln's four-month birthday.
He's been growing like a weed, and we know he'll get bigger.
We just don't know how much, but we suspect he'll be along the size that Monty was, probably about 50 to 55 pounds.
We really don't want him to be too big.
We hope he's not too big.
There's nothing we can do about it.
No.
Except not overfeed him.
Right.
And we are trying to get him used to being groomed.
He seems to be okay with us brushing him.
We have to work on his paws.
We have to work on his paws a little bit.
But he likes us, which is a good thing.
Except for a few instances, we think Zephyr likes him as well.
At least we hope she does.
He was about 20 pounds when we brought him home a month ago.
I don't know what he weighs now.
He goes to the vet on Tuesday or Wednesday this week?
Wednesday for his four-month checkup.
So I'm sure he'll...
I bet he's at least 10 pounds more.
I bet he's about 30.
Maybe.
I don't know.
We'll see.
He's growing like a weed, so he's probably more than double the size from when we picked him up.
I don't think he's 40 pounds.
No, but I mean size-wise.
Maybe not weight-wise, but he's more size-wise.
He's gotten quite a bit bigger from when he was little.
Let's put a couple pictures of him smaller here.
Right, the day we picked him up.
Yeah.
But one of the nice things is he allows us to pick him up.
And he's very comfortable with us like this and doing this and playing with him and touching his paws.
Turning him upside down.
Yep, he allows us to rub his belly and stuff like that.
He's a little...
I don't think he really wants to be in my lap at this point.
He wants to be in the dog park.
He wants to get down.
But we do this quite a bit with him to make sure he stays comfortable.
Yeah, get him used to being handled because he will need to be groomed.
Yes, and so that's important that we do that.
We're trying to learn from all our other dogs and the issues we had with them as they got to be adults.
A lot of it is what we dealt with with Monty.
I think we let him get away too much when he was a puppy, and we didn't do things that we should have.
And so we're trying to do that better.
We weren't able to spend as much time with him because we were still working, so that's why.
Yep, so we are definitely taking advantage of that.
We're taking advantage of the fact that we're in this park where there's a lot of people.
A lot of dogs.
A lot of dogs, yeah.
I think one thing we have to comment on is he's better known in this park than we are.
Yes.
People will see him and go, oh, there's Lincoln.
They all know his name.
Which is very common in the park.
People may know the dog's names, but they may not know the owner's names.
Yeah, I think to me the one that sticks in my mind is when we walk by this one campsite
and the lady says, oh, look at the little fuzzy puppy.
And the husband goes, that's Lincoln.
We don't even know these people, and they know Lincoln.
I think that's kind of cool.
Come on.
Look, follow Zephyr.
Come on, follow Zephyr.
She's got this figured out.
A little bit afraid of the gate.
Lincoln, here, you want something in your mouth?
