Have you ever heard of Oshiya? Those guys help to push people inside of the train
cars. And today I will be Oshiya.
This puzzle is called Zen and the art of fitting too many people in a train.
It is absolutely well-made and beautifully presented.
It comes in this beautiful Japanese style wrap.
And then we have this train car.
You can open the door and the goal will be to fit all these little guys
inside of the train. There are 11 small guys like this one,
but each of them have a different face expression. Some of them are happy.
Some of them are a little bit sad and some of them are a little bit
angry. And there is one guy with a briefcase.
The name of the puzzle is Zen and the art of fitting too many people in a train.
You are an Oshiya, now do your job.
So I am the Oshiya and I will be putting all the guys inside.
The puzzle came to me with a letter from Jody Galland, the puzzle designer.
He told me that the wrap for the puzzle,
this one was made by his wife and his daughters made the
face expressions for each and every one of the passengers.
So it's like a small family business.

And now let's try to figure out how to fit all the 11 passengers inside of the
train. There is a pole here and it blocks the way.
I can actually fit one guy. No,
I can't fit even one guy.
So I guess we have to remove the pole first and then deal with the packing
problem. So it moves a little bit. You can move this part.
The wheels are moving,
but I don't think they have anything to do with the puzzle. Oh,
I can see through these cutouts and I can see
that the compartment inside has like pockets inside.
There is one pocket here. There is another one here.
So I'll deal with that when I remove the pole. Let's see.
This part looks kind of interesting. I think that it doesn't belong here.
Okay. I can remove this thing and it doesn't belong,
since it was fit inside like that, but with a little bit of gap.
There are two magnets and they repel each other.
So that's why it gives you a clue that you can remove this part.
Now I have to find a magnet where I can put this thing so that...
Oh, there is a magnet here. Oh,
there is actually a cutout here that looks like a hint that you have to put this
part in here. And it unlocks something. Oh, it unlocks something here on top.
Let's see again. Oh, it closes something and then it unlocks it.
And now I believe I can remove the pole. Yeah.
And now I have a lot of space here. Oh,
probably I can use this pole to move the parts inside.
That's why there are cutouts here.
You can just put it and move the passengers inside of the train. Okay.
So we have 10 exactly the same guys and one that is a little bit bigger.
Let's start with this one. This one, since it is different,
it feels like there is a spring there, or maybe there is a magnet.
What if other guys have magnets? Let's try. No,
I don't think there are magnets in other passengers, only in this one. Okay.
So if I try to put him inside,
I believe that this will be the last guy to put inside,
since there is no way to put him inside of the train, except for like this.
So it will be the last one. And then I close the door.
Even if I put him like that, I won't be able to close the door.
Let's see what we have inside. There is a big pocket right here.
Something is moving inside and I see there is a metal pin.
I don't know if you see it. It is right there. And when I tilt the train,
it moves from this side to this side. Okay.
So probably it will interfere with some of the parts,
but I'll deal with that when I hit it.
For now, I have to figure out how to put the parts inside. Let's see.
There is a pocket here.
Let's try to stick this guy inside and move him to the left
like that. Okay.
That's actually not easy to put him where I want him to go,
since now it is on the right side. I wanted to put it here,
but it went to this side. One wrong move and everything falls apart.
So now I have to figure out how to remove the guy. Okay.
So the first guy is in and it looks like the pocket on the left
has an extra pocket. So when I tilt it, it goes a little bit further.
I think that you don't see anything what I'm doing there.
So I'll try to show you like that. So there are,
there is space for two guys on the bottom.
And then I believe there is space for three more guys on top,
like that. And those five will be sitting on the left side.
Then on the right side,
there is a pocket and probably another pocket inside.
So it will be like one goes here, another one goes in here.
And then probably one more will be here,
one here and another one, it's already inside, will be right here.
And then I will have just enough space to fit the last guy. Looks pretty easy.
So let's try to figure out if it is even possible.
Maybe it is not possible to do, as I think of it.
Okay. The other guy is inside.
So now I put three more guys on the left.
That's one. This one will be two.
And now I think that I have enough space to fit the third one.
There are five guys on the left.
And it turns out that putting the... figuring out the way where the
guys will be inside, isn't that hard as putting them inside,
since it is like a huge dexterity challenge. Okay.
Now this guy goes inside. Oh, finally,
it took me like five minutes to figure out the way,
how to place this guy all the way down, like that, flat.
Since when you put him there, there is a cutout and it goes straight
with the head down or the legs down. It depends on how you put him inside.
Okay. The second one went inside much easier.
That's a relief. I didn't have to spend so much time playing with it.
Okay. So now some more guys go inside.
Five and two. There's another one. It goes to the
right. Then there is one more that goes to the right. Let's see.
Yeah, there is one more and it goes to the right. Perfect. Okay.
So there are 10 little guys inside.
Now I have to fit this guy with a briefcase in,
but it doesn't want to go all the way in because of the magnet.
It pops out. So it likes pushing people inside of the
train car in Tokyo. Okay.
And now I can close the door and the puzzle is solved. Oh, that is fun.
I love the presentation of the puzzle. The solution isn't really difficult.
There is a pin inside that kind of supposed to interfere with pieces,
but I haven't noticed that. And yeah,
all the guys are inside. You can see their bellies with the Japanese flag.
The puzzle is solved. Absolutely beautiful design, a great puzzle,
a little bit of dexterity challenge.
