Massive sinkhole impacts residents in Conshohocken https://6abc.com/post/water-main-break-leads-sinkhole-conshohocken-montgomery-county/18590018/
Crews have been on the scene for much of the day in Conchahokan trying to fix a huge sinkhole caused by, yes, yet another water main break.
This is the enormous hole that started to open up last night along West 10th Avenue after water was seen shooting up from underground.
At the peak of this, dozens of residents were without gas and water and heat.
They're being told now it could be a while before it's fully restored.
Action News reporter Amanda Pitts live in the scene now.
Amanda, they're starting to make some significant progress there.
Yeah, some good news for the folks who live on this street.
All thanks to the hard men and women who are working hard here on this street.
You can see this sinkhole, still a massive hole, and the workers standing around the perimeter, many inside as well, working to make these repairs.
They've been working on both the water main and a gas line that was damaged because of it and filling in this hole with dirt.
Some good news tonight after a long day for these folks.
Both Pico and Aqua have restored gas and water to all but a few of these customers.
I heard it's like at least 12 feet deep.
Chopper 6 shows a bird's eye view of a massive sinkhole that opened up last night on West 10th Avenue in Conchahokan.
The hole nearly as wide as the street.
Somebody could have drove into that hole.
That's a pretty big hole.
I was laying in bed last night and I heard a loud bang.
Elizabeth Most recorded this video from her front porch around 10 o'clock Wednesday.
The broken water main sending water shooting up onto the street.
Moments after my neighbor across the street moved his car, the sinkhole opened up.
It grew and grew and for much of the day-to-day, crews were inside it, repairing the water main and underground gas equipment that was damaged.
We were pretty alarmed and we were like, oh, we smell gas.
When we went out, we could smell the gas. We had to keep the doors shut.
And then after a while, we turned the water on, no water, no gas, heat was off.
At one point, 80 Pico customers were without gas and 50 Aqua customers were without water.
It just says emergency gas shut off.
Some families left the neighborhood to seek warmer shelter.
Stay somewhere warm.
I know some neighbors have already gotten a hotel or they're staying with family.
For those who stuck around, workers delivered cases of water and even brought in a water truck for people to fill buckets.
And while it's an inconvenience, these residents are just glad this wasn't worse.
It probably could have been way worse.
I mean, no one's car fell in.
Luckily, nothing exploded.
It's scary stuff.
Now, Aqua says all but four customers have their water back.
As for Pico, a spokesman says of the 83 customers that were without gas today, all but six have been restored.
Those six people will be without gas until tomorrow morning, though they have been provided space heaters.
Live in Conshohocken tonight, Amanda Pitts, Channel 6 Action News.
Relief after a long day. Amanda, thank you.
