Are you eating healthy… exercising… and still feeling stuck?
If you feel inflamed, puffy, fatigued, or resistant to weight loss, the issue may not be calories — it may be metabolic inflexibility.
In this video, Kristina Hess, MS, CNS, LDN explains:
• What metabolic flexibility really means • How insulin resistance and hormone resistance develop • The 3 primary pathways into ketosis (fasting, exercise, and low-carb nutrition) • How mitochondrial health impacts fat loss and energy • Why sustainable weight loss requires metabolic retraining — not restriction
Ketosis is not a diet trend. It is a metabolic state that signals fat adaptation. The goal is not permanent ketosis — it is the ability to move in and out of fuel sources efficiently.
If you are experiencing weight loss resistance, stubborn inflammation, or hormonal imbalance, this video will help you understand the root cause.

So have you ever felt puffy, inflamed, tired,
or weight loss resistant even when you are eating healthy?
This is often a metabolic issue, not a willpower issue.
So today I'm gonna explain metabolic flexibility,
how ketosis works, and why restoring fat adaptation
improves hormones and your cellular health.
So what is metabolic flexibility?
Basically, it's the ability to switch
between using glucose and fat for fuel.
Now, what does that look like when you're inflexible?
Like you have constant carb cravings,
you have energy crashes, right?
You have difficulty losing weight,
you have an elevated fasting insulin on your blood work,
you have increased inflammation,
and potentially you have that chronically high insulin
is blocking your fat burning.
So your mitochondria are now inefficient,
your cells, they lose that flexibility to toggle
between these two fat and glucose fuel sources.
So they're probably experiencing insulin resistance,
leptin resistance, and potentially
thyroid hormone conversion issues.
You might be experiencing PCOS, endometriosis,
or some kind of patterns of metabolic syndrome, right?
So how do we induce ketosis?
Where are the three main metabolic pathways into ketosis?
So creating ketones is not a diet trend,
they are a backup fuel system, okay?
So the first pathway in is fasting.
And what happens when you're not putting fuel
into your body?
Well, your insulin is gonna drop.
Number one, your glycogen stores are gonna deplete,
and the body's gonna start to create these ketone bodies,
which increases your fat utilization.
It's gonna actually tap into your fat storage.
And what's also gonna happen over several hours,
potentially beyond 24 hours of not eating,
is this process of autophagy,
or self-eating and cleansing, right?
Where so damaged cells get cleaned,
and it's really like a deep cleaning,
spring cleaning kind of process.
So second pathway in is exercise.
And a lot of folks don't realize that
after a night of technically fasting,
because you're sleeping,
and then maybe getting up and doing a workout can also,
if you're very flexible, can induce ketone production.
So you're burning fat for fuel.
So one of the things that resistance training does
is it increases something called GLUT4 activity.
And so it's helping you be more insulin sensitive
and use sugar more efficiently.
Also, exercise is gonna be another way
to deplete glycogen stores,
also improving insulin sensitivity.
Then we also experience something
called mitochondrial biogenesis.
So the creation of new mitochondria
can occur during exercise.
So if you're not strength training,
please start a regular strength training program
because more muscle is gonna make you
more insulin sensitive and able to handle
your glucose better.
So it's worth taking the time
two or three times a week to strength train.
It's not gonna burn a lot of calories,
but having more muscle on your body
is going to be making you more metabolically flexible.
Okay, so number three, third pathway into ketosis
is a low carb diet.
I prefer carb cycling,
which I will talk to you about in a sec.
But what does a low carb diet do?
When you lower your carbohydrates low enough,
you will induce the metabolic state of ketosis.
So again, your insulin is gonna come down, right?
So that's gonna help reset your insulin levels.
And if you stay in that metabolic state
for a little while and get fat adapted,
your body will get used to using fat for fuel.
Very, very worthwhile endeavor.
And it will improve this ability
for metabolic switching between fuel sources.
So the goal is metabolic flexibility,
not permanent ketosis.
So once you have this metabolic flexibility,
you're now more insulin sensitive.
You have better leptin signaling.
So leptin is a hormone that it's our satiety hormone.
It tells us to stop eating.
And this is where the GLPs have helped reset leptin.
It's going to upregulate AMPK,
which is gonna help your mitochondria
be more efficient making energy.
It's gonna reduce inflammatory cytokines.
So, oh, let's not forget visceral fat.
Yeah, like it will tap into
and reduce dangerous visceral fat
around all your organs, not just belly fat.
So when mitochondrial function is better,
your cellular energy improves,
you're gonna be in a better mood.
You're gonna have better cognitive clarity.
You're gonna have more balanced hormones.
You will just have like better functioning immunity.
Like literally everything gets better.
And if you are feeling hormonally stuck
or weight loss resistant,
you may not need just another diet plan
where you're tracking your macros.
You might need this sort of metabolic retraining.
So inside my personalized program,
we do assess your insulin dynamics,
your micronutrient status,
and also just check your DNA to make sure
that if you are gonna do a low carb diet,
there's different types of low carb strategies.
Maybe yours is more Mediterranean.
Maybe yours is super, super high fat.
It really, really depends, honestly, on your genetics.
Like what direction would be best for you?
So one other thing, and this is not necessarily
to do with how to get into ketosis,
but sustainable fat loss isn't about long-term restriction.
It is about restoring metabolic intelligence.
So if you are seeking a very customized,
tailored strategy for getting beyond
your weight loss resistance,

or at the very least schedule a free 15-minute call
so we can chat and see if it's a good fit for you.
