The Dish: Walking taco recipe from Secondhand Ranch in Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood
For the dish, grab your hats and boots and spurs because we're going country.
We are. A Slash in Nashville Life has set up shop in Fishtown,
making a cowboy and cowgirl out of us city kids. It's called Second Hand Ranch and today
we are making their walking taco for a honky tonk adventure.
Here we go. Second Hand Ranch.
Second Hand Ranch is a honky tonk dive bar and thrift shop that just opened its
saloon doors on Frankfort Avenue in Fishtown.
Are you sure you didn't just walk into Nashville?
I'm little Nashville in Philadelphia. We're here for it.
Are the Philly cowboys and cowgirls ready for this?
Always. Every weekend.
You walk straight into the bar.
It's huge. This is massive.
Massive.
There's a stage for live music, a DJ booth, and yes, a secondhand store.
You can shop and drink.
Very encouraged.
We have a bar back here.
There's clothing, jewelry, records, magazines.
Shoes lining the place. Hats galore.
Do you find people at like, say, midnight on a Friday night walking around saying,
you know what? I need a hat.
Yes.
And I need boots.
Yep. And they'll throw their other stuff into their bag and continue drinking and shopping.
You're making a cowboy out of everybody, right?
Here's proof.
It's like a glove.
And since you can walk and shop and eat, I got in the kitchen with founder Josh Sampson.
What was Philly missing?
Western outlaw.
Yes. Western outlaw.
We're whipping up a quick menu staple.
We're making our signature walking taco.
It's a burnt end brisket chili, corn salsa, pickled red onion, the Philly Cooper Sharp.
Thank you.
Cheese.
We must.
Jalapeno and a chipotle crema.
Just tear open a bag of Fritos.
The cheese goes down first, then pickled red onion, corn salsa, some sliced jalapenos.
The chili on top.
Oh, it feels nice and warm. Yeah.
And let that melt and just kind of crunch it.
Yeah, crunch it.
One final touch.
That chipotle crema adds a little spice and flavor.
Cute.
That's the walking taco.
So we take a stroll to the game area where there are pool tables, a photo boot.
Who's better than us right now?
Ready?
Time for a rubber ducky.
My claw game is strong.
Yeah, it is strong.
Good job, ducky.
This former national bank was built in 1878 by legendary architect Frank Furness.
We used the vault as our keg room and walking cooler.
There's still treasure in that vault.
And the Lone Star beers and cocktails are flowing.
I think people had a little inner country in them,
and now that we got this place, they're letting it loose.
Just wait for the line dancing.
Yeah.
Grab a partner and grab some of their upscale honky-tonk
eats from dressed up wagyu hot dogs to nachos to a Cooper Sharp grilled cheesesteak.
Now dip it in the brisket burnt end chili.
Whoa.
It's good.
Yeehaw.
Yeah, yeehaw.
Yeehaw.
That was like the one country expression I knew.
So two questions.
Did you keep the hat and where's the ducky?
Okay, so I did not keep the hat because somebody else wanted to buy it.
Okay.
And I have proudly displayed the ducky at home because I got it on my first clock try,
and I'm usually not that good at the clock.
Now we know.
Yeah, you gotta go.
It's so fun.
The live music, line dancing.
No, thank you.
But walking tacos for everybody.
