A 14-year-old boy from Philadelphia is still missing this morning after he disappeared
into the waters off Wildwood during a school field trip yesterday.
Action News spoke exclusively with his family, who gave us this photo of Devoris Carter.
They say Devoris attended a school in Northeast Philadelphia for students with special needs
and had both a school chaperone and a family member with him on that trip.
But when the family member stepped away to get food, Carter went into the water with
some of the other students near Maury's Pier while staff was watching from the shore.
There were no lifeguards on duty, which is typical for a weekday this time of year.
His grandmother, Kenya Pippin, tells Action News she wants answers and accountability.
I think that's a disgrace.
He doesn't deserve this.
He's just a kid.
You know, he graduated, he was supposed to graduate on Wednesday.
If you're scared of water, you don't let children in the water unsupervised.
Three other students also had to be rescued and were aided out of the water by a Wildwood
police officer who arrived at the scene first, but the search for Carter was suspended after
several hours.
