We turn now to the latest developments in that deadly hospital shooting in
Wilmington, Delaware. A 23 year old suspect has been taken into custody now
in Philadelphia's Alney neighborhood last night after that manhunt
investigators say he opened fire at the Wilmington Hospital at around three
yesterday afternoon. Law enforcement say the suspect is a hospital employee who
shot two other employees. One of them has died. We have team coverage. Brianna
Gallagher will have more from patients about the terrifying moments inside the
hospital. But we're going to begin with Catherine scott with more on the
arrest and investigation from all need Catherine.
Well, we've been speaking with neighbors this morning and they said
that there was a heavy police presence here last night. This remains an active
investigation. So far, the name of the suspect has not been released.
The investigation into yesterday's double shooting at Wilmington Hospital
that claimed one life stretched to the only section of Philadelphia where 23
year old suspect was taken into custody around 9 30 last night. Officers were
called to Wilmington Hospital around 3 30 p.m. For what authorities are
calling a targeted, isolated incident during which two people were shot. The
hospital was placed on lockdown. Hours later, law enforcement agencies
converged in only at several addresses, including ninth and Lindley. A Toyota
RAV four was towed a few blocks away. Law enforcement sources say license
plate readers were an important resource as they tracked movements
related to the person taken into custody. For perspective, Action News
spoke with safety and security consultant Maureen Rush, who discussed
what comes next in an investigation like this. I think the first thing
they're going to do is the why, right? So they're gonna they're gonna go to
H. R. And say, has there been any issues with this employee? If he's a
temp employee, go to the temp services. There have been any issues with this
person. Obviously, they know where he lives. Hopefully they can then track
down a family member, a parent. Investigators were speaking with the
suspect to try to learn more about him. At this point, we're still awaiting
information on his extradition to Delaware. We're live and only this
morning. Catherine Scott Channel six Action News. All right, Catherine,
thank you. Now let's turn to the scary, intense moments that unfolded inside
Wilmington Hospital yesterday afternoon as SWAT teams stormed in and
placed everyone on lockdown. Action News reporter Brianna Gallagher is live in
Wilmington with reaction from patients there, Brianna.
Yes, sir. And the hospital is back open this morning. We've been seeing hospital
employees coming and going. It's an entirely different scene here compared
to yesterday afternoon when they were on lockdown and the entire surrounding
area was flooded with police.
All these cops were coming in and they said, Get out of here. Get in the
bathroom. And they put all of us in the bathroom, including all the medical
workers. Law enforcement swarmed Wilmington Hospital in Delaware
yesterday afternoon for an active shooter. I was in the emergency room
and you could hear the shots go off. Video from a patient inside shows what
she saw from her hospital bed. Law enforcement with long guns and tactical
gear canvassing the hallway. People living nearby at first didn't know what
was going on, but they knew it was serious. SWAT vehicle, several police
or a bunch of police officers, all three different counties. For nearly
four hours, the hospital was on lockdown as SWAT searched for the suspect. All
patients and visitors were told to shelter in place in the nearest room.
Sources tell ABC News that it was an employee that shot two other hospital
employees, killing one of them. It's just heartbreaking, right? I mean, it
was very scary. Chopper six was overhead as authorities brought people out from
the hospital. We started to see the hospital employees sort of flooding out
on that was concerning. Also, many reuniting with loved ones after a
traumatic few hours, not knowing how things would turn out. Violence or loss
of life in our city is unacceptable.
It's particularly distressing
when an incident like this occurs in a hospital whose fundamental purpose
is to treat injuries and save lives. Now, there's still a lot of questions
here. Most importantly, how did someone get in the hospital with a gun off
camera? We spoke with some visitors. They say when you enter the hospital,
you have to go through a metal detector and you're also greeted with security
guards. Of course, all this remains under investigation. We're live here in
Wilmington. Brianna Gallagher, Channel six Action News, Sarah. Yes. So a lot
of questions about all of this. Brianna, thank you.
