Highlighting VOLO DC in the Area
Jul 6, 2026
Back out to our Zip Trip in D.C.'s Navy Yard, Annie Mae is hanging out with the folks from
Volo, dedicated to bringing people together through sports. Hi Annie Mae.
Of course the World Cup, all the fun sporting events we have in the D.C. area over the summer,
even IndyCar has people excited about the sports, but we're talking about Volo today
and the things that you guys have and provide for the D.C. area. Tell us about it. Yeah,
so I'm Shane, I'm the Managing Director for Volo D.C. Volo is a company that was started
basically to help people build communities. So we offer adult social sports all around D.C. and the
DMV. So we're talking Arlington, Alexandria, and Bethesda, Silver Spring, but not just in D.C.,
but focus in D.C. And then, so we help people get out, get active, meet people, stay in shape
on the adult side, but then we also have a kids foundation. So when adults play with Volo,
the money that they pay helps for kids ages 5 to 13 to play for free. And a lot of our programs
for kids and adults, but for kids happen to be in the Navy Yard as well. So this is kind of a
perfect location for adults and for kiddos. One thing I really do love about, it's not only about
getting up, getting active, getting physical, it's also about the relationships that you have
and that you meet people just going out and playing those sports. So let's talk about that too. Yeah,
totally. So the top reasons why people play Volo are to meet people. We're talking friends,
we're talking romantic relationships. We've got a number of Volo couples happen because they met
Volo and now are engaged and married. But so that's the primary reason why people play Volo.
It's not to get outside and be active. That's part of it, but that's not the main reason.
And the other thing I'll say to that is that we offer a number of sports. So soccer and basketball
and flag football, very more intense. But then we also offer cornhole and bocce and kickball
with flip cup. And so very social sports as well. So you don't have to be a turbo athlete in order
to play Volo. It's really all about community. I didn't even know that you offer flip cup. That's
a good way to meet people as well. When it comes to, of course, the sports that you guys have,
what do you find that is the most popular that people want to sign up for? Yeah. Soccer,
volleyball and soccer, volleyball, kickball are our most popular. It's so funny that you say that
because my brother literally plays on a Volo kickball team with his fiance. They didn't
meet that way. What a cute story it would be. When it comes to kickball, walk us through maybe
a game. Like how long is it? What days do they meet up? How many games a week? Things like that.
Yeah. So our biggest day is Thursdays for kickball for all of our sports actually. And then our
biggest location for kickball is on the National Mall. So we have thousands of people out there
for kickball and other sports every Thursday for the majority of the year. And then kickball games
are around 45 minutes. And the best part of kickball is that there's flip cup attached to it.
And so people don't have to drink if they don't want to drink, but they go, they play their sport.
They then all walk together to the bar and then they hang out at the bar. So talk about building
community and having fun. It's like a whole all-inclusive experience. So how long typically
does the season last really for anything? Is it a couple of months? Is it one month? Yeah,
about two months, eight weeks. Okay, there you go. So when you're playing a game, we have fun
absolutely on the National Mall. Where can we find more information? Do you have a website,
social media if we want to get involved? Yes, volosports.com. You can find everything there.
And then volokids.org is where the Kids Foundation is for anybody who wants to
either sign their kid up to play sports or to volunteer and be a coach. All right,
thank you so much for joining us.
