Hello friends, welcome back. We've got a brand new episode of The Drop. It's coming to you from
Cactus Music World headquarters in steamy Houston, Texas. I'm Ruben Dominguez.
I'm Quinn Bishop.
All right, so here's the deal, guys. We want to say thanks as always. You can catch us here
every Friday at 9 on My20. If you want the same episode in the digital world,
it drops Saturdays at 6 p.m. Download the Fox Local app. That way you'll never miss an episode.
We've got some segments throughout this show. We've got did you know, we've got drop karaoke,
we've got drop facts, and then we'll wind it all up with what's going on. But stay with us
till the very end of this episode because you get a chance to win some swag. Sir, do you have
today's list? Oh yeah, fantastic list, Ruben. Let's get into it. Now let's do it. Let's talk
first up. Let's talk about the Rolling Stones' brand new album, Foreign Tongues. This is their
27th album in the U.S. produced by Andrew Watt, who did their previous record, Hackney Diamonds.
And this is, you know, really kind of an amazing twilight of their career, artistic
resurgence from this band that had been inactive as far, I mean, always touring, but inactive as
far as creating new music. And I think the death of Charlie Watt's kind of kicked that into high
gear. Really, really strong record. I will tell you if you're spending a weekend with it, it is a
Mick Jagger record. I would agree. The majority of the songs you can tell are predominantly written
and demoed by Mick. Helped out, Steve Winwood, Bruno Mars, Paul McCartney makes an appearance
again. And the one you wouldn't expect, Robert Smith of The Cure. Wow. Yeah, yeah. And the artwork,
you got to talk about the artwork. Is this Ron Wood? Is it by Ron Wood? Because he does a lot of...
No, it's a Chicago portraiture artist that does, that works in this style. Okay. Named Nathaniel
Mary Quinn. Nice. And I think the artwork is spectacular. I love it. I thought it was Woody
when I saw it. It does. He's in there. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's in there. I love that. All right,
Rolling Stones, there you go. Guys, our first segment of the day, this is called Did You Know?
Quinn's going to ask a trivia question today pertaining to the Stones. And the first correct
answer, you guys got to jump on that QR code or send it on the email to us. First correct
answer is going to win prizes. Ask the question, my friend. Did you know? The first single from
Foreign Tongues, rough and twisted, was a surprise release under a name other than the Rolling
Stones. What was the name of the band? And I don't. The interwebs know. I know, who knows.
All right, guys, so there you go. We're going to take the first correct answer,
and you're wondering what are the prizes. Well, you get a Cactus commemorative t-shirt,
and whether you want it or not, you're going to get the Ruben Dominguez commemorative bottle
head. So send in your answers, people. And if you get the answer right, we want you to come
into the store. We want you to come up to the counter. We're going to take some video of you
guys getting your stuff, and then we're going to put it on the next episode of The Drop. Oh,
yeah, we are. Let's go, man. Okay, next up, Gracie Abrams. This is her brand new record,
Daughter From Hell. This is her third LP. You know, pop singer, songwriter, and indie pop,
really kind of a contemporary of Olivia Rodrigo and even Phoebe Bridgers. Great singer. There is
some interesting hubbub about this new record in that there's a lot of complicated criticism
going on with regards to nepotism. Her father is J.J. Abrams, the director who's made Star Wars
films, among other films. And I read this really interesting piece where they made a parallel,
it's kind of a comparison with her and Carly Simon. Carly Simon, her father is Simon & Schuster,
big in the publishing industry and afforded her an opportunity. And same with Gracie. I will tell
you, I think Gracie is very talented and has a terrific voice. Totally agree. Listen for yourselves
and you make the call. And we got some great gifts for you when you purchase the record. Look at this
cool slip mat. You're getting Gracie Abrams slip mat and a lyric card only if you shop at Cactus
Music. Come on now, get the swag. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. You got colored vinyl
there. Yes, we do have colored vinyl. And this is limited edition. They're calling this Cobalt.
Cobalt? Yeah, they're calling it Cobalt. There it is. I'm gonna go with blue. I'm gonna go with
blue. It's funny that these two records are next picker or packaged together. This is Jack White.
This is his brand new record. This is Frozen Charlotte. And of course, he likes to go with
the blue motif for his records. And I love it when artists do this. He came straight off the
road with his band from an acclaimed tour and went straight into the studio while they were still hot
and recorded this new record. And, you know, the last record, No Name, was very well received after
some kind of got experimental on a couple of records and I think some lost some fans.
This is really a return to form of what people want to hear him do. I was going to say the exact
same thing. But also, and not that any of his albums have been super overproduced, because he
likes to keep kind of like that rawness to his recordings. This sounded to me as like a band in
one room with one mic in the middle of the room, just going for it. So yeah.
And more colored vinyl. This is called Ice Blue. Or Cobalt, or just blue.
They're so similar, right? Yeah, it's the same pressing. And he does not have a Houston date.
He's got tour dates in Texas, but not one in Houston. And I know this because I looked it up.
Yeah, I did too. So you're gonna have to travel. Okay, our next record is a really interesting one.
We love Charlie Crockett. This is his brand new record Clovis. After three albums for the Island
label, he very unceremoniously broke up online with them and said, I'm done. And I got a brand
new record. He's partnered with Atlantic Records for the release of this. What was problematic is
I don't think he exercised or communicated his declining his option to keep making records for
Islands. They're like, whoa, hey, wait a minute. And so they had to actually pull this from the
stores. Cactus is one of the only stores that you can buy this CD as well as from him online.
Now this was recorded at Norman Petty's studio that was responsible for all the great Buddy Holly
records back in the day with Shooter Jennings Producing. The funny thing is they made this and
all got COVID while they were making the record. So they call it Clovis. Clovis. Clovis. Clovidless.
But if you love Charlie, pick that one up. Yeah, it's a good one.
All right, guys, we're jumping in to Drop Carry Oki. Take a look at your screens right now. You're
probably telling yourself or asking yourself, what in the world am I looking at? This is probably one
of the most famous internet drummers. He is a YouTube sensation. I cannot pronounce his name.
And basically he does versions of popular songs, leans mostly to a hard rock metal prog kind of
thing. But whatever he plays, he can basically play it with one hand. He'll be doing the whole
thing and then he'll just start doing rolls and stuff. He'll drink a cup of coffee while he's
a freak of nature. He's wildly popular. But we're sharing this with you because we want you to send
us video. We want to see you guys doing whatever you're super talented at or something you have no
talent for. You can be singing, juggling, dancing. You know, I don't know. If you're great at washing
dishes, send us a little video and YouTube will be immortalized on Drop Carry Oki. A lot of new
music to talk about here. And what do you got there, sir? Oh, we have the Heated Rivalry soundtrack,
the sensation, the limited series, a huge... I mean, people are just going nuts. I haven't seen
it yet. And this features... This is a cool soundtrack because the score is a big part of the
show. Score by Peter Peter. So you get all those tracks, plus songs that people know from the
film, like all the things she said by Tattoo and a Wet Leg track. Okay. But the funny thing
about this, this is so great. This really appeals to fans as they've done. There's a double LP,
and it's done in the color scheme of the two teams. There's the Montreal versus...
This is the Montreal versus Boston edition. So you get two distinctly different color vinyl.
There's the... There's, I guess, the Montreal. Red, white, and blue, I guess. Yeah, red, white,
and blue. And this, it also comes with a fold-out poster and cards. Oh, I like that one. Yeah,
that's great, right? And each vinyl, because it's like hand-poured vinyl, each one is different.
Wow. Okay, cool. Comes with a fold-out poster and collector cards. We did an event for this.
Fans were going crazy. It's a wildly popular program, which I still have not seen. I have not
seen it either. All right. Let's talk about Beth Orton. She's a staff favorite artist. This is her
brand new record, The Ground Above. And what you need to know about her is her music is really
rooted in traditional British folk music, along with Nick Drake, Sandy Denny, and all that. But
then there's a contemporary feel of it sounding more spacey and ethereal. It's really her own
thing. She's always reminded me a lot of Peter Gabriel, but she's got this fantastic kind of
crackly voice. It's the 30th anniversary of her brilliant debut record, Trailer Park. And I hope
we get a tour date. We saw her last time she was through, and it was fantastic. But if you're
looking for something different, this is it. This is really a terrific record for her. It's wonderful.
She's making recordings that are this compelling this far down the road. Love it. And then another
female artist, this is Alison Russell. This is In the Hour of Chaos. And Alison Russell, this is her
third album. Her last album, Return, was Grammy nominated. And what you need to know about her,
she's Canadian singer-songwriter, activist. She does a lot of stuff. And she's a veteran of
several groups, including Poe Girl with Rihanna Giddens, and Birds of Canada, a great folk group
that played in Houston. You've got a lot of guests on here. You've got Nora Jones and Devon Gufillion,
who maybe you saw him perform at Cactus Music. I missed that one. Oh, it was super good. Great
modern soul stuff. This is really, really a cool record. Oh, Sarah Watkins is almost on.
She's... we love Sarah. Very, very strong record. And if you like your folk Americana,
the soulful, socially conscious tip, this is for you.
Cool. Alison Russell.
And let's talk about one of my favorites. This is Swamp Dog. This is Jerry Williams Jr.
And Jerry is approaching 84 years old, and this is his album. Swamp Dog contemplates the afterlife,
where he is thinking about his life, everything he's done, and what's going to mean for him in
the great beyond. And it says, I love this sticker, The Sunday Times says it's the missing
link between Otis Redding and Frank Zappa. I think that's absolutely true. If you're not
familiar with Swamp Dog, he is probably one of the most essential soul artists that is not a
household name. He was a producer, entrepreneur, record label owner, amazing, amazing musician,
and wrote a bunch of hits for other people. There's a great documentary on his life called
Swamp Dog Gets His Pool Painted, if you want to know anything. We talked about that, because they
released the music, like a soundtrack to the documentary. We talked about it. You got to check
this guy out. Just go to a playlist and listen to like five songs by him, and you will get it.
Swamp Dog is cool. Yeah, and buy the album so you can read his quote on the back for yourself,
which is amazing. Can't say it on TV. Their families are watching. Okay, so drop facts,
guys. We have been talking about the art of the album for so long. Take a look at this photograph
here. We have a Cactus customer and someone who's connected to our show, Amina Pearson,
doing some shopping here, the daughter of our great executive producer, Rodney Pearson. She
came in, bought herself a classic hip-hop album by Outkast, and she's also rocking the t-shirt
that goes with it. I thought that was really, really cool. And Outkast is as creative as
they've always been with their beats and their lyrics and their grooves. Always incredible
artwork on their albums. Yes, and Amina says, I've gained a new appreciation for Ekamini and
its use of Zodiac themes. I did not know this. The name is a mix of Andre 3000 signed Aquarius
and Big Boy signed Gemini. I did not, you see? Yeah, she says it. This is the knowledge that
you gain on the drop. Hey, I got it. I got it from a customer. It's a teaching moment. I got
it from a customer. And that it brings, and she loves the artwork because it brings their two
different personalities together, balancing their flashy, cool energy and authentic Southern soul.
Love it, man. Yeah, man. Love it. Love it. Love it. All right. Shout out to Amina. This week's Drop Facts.
All right. More music, sir. More music. More new releases. Let's talk about Giveon. Now, this is a
deluxe edition. Occasionally, you get about a year down the road or two years down the road.
What happens is a lot of the tracks that drop that are big don't end up being on the original
album. So that's what you have here. This is Giveon. This is Beloved.
This is the deluxe edition. You get five extra tracks on here. And what you need to know,
this is a sophomore album, eight times Grammy nominated, and really one of the
greatest modern soul singers that's emerged in recent years. He's a very distinctive voice,
which you need to hear if that's your thing. And I think he does a fantastic job of balancing
classic soul stylings with what is contemporary. And he's really hitting on something because
just picking up new things. I've talked to so many people that love this guy. And some heavy
hitters on this album with him. Teddy Swims, Sasha Keeble, Leon Thomas. We keep seeing him
turning up. Yeah. Yeah. So this is Kalani, too. Yeah. Kalani. This is a good one, guys.
Put this in your collection. All right. We're going to get rocking here. Number 10. This is
The Menzingers. This is a Philly punk band. This is their eighth album. And I always think it's
interesting when bands get to a certain point in their career and they really got to kind of
double down or find some new inspiration. And they worked with Will Yip to produce this record.
And they really claim that he became, of course, he's produced a ton of great records, but
claim that he really inspired them and got a better performance out of them. And they think
this is maybe their best thing that they've ever done. So if you followed this band, you haven't
heard this record yet. This is one to check out. How do you say it? The Menzingers. Menzingers.
Everything I ever saw is the name of the record. It's beautiful. All right. And now we've got
Turnover, staff favorite. And this is a really interesting band. And I think, you know,
Turnstall kind of did the same thing. They started out as like a punk rock band. These guys started
at Turnover, started as a punk rock band. But now they're like a dreamy pop thing. This is their first
truly independent record after a kind of a long run with Run For Cover. It's their sixth album.
And the staff here just loves them. They're really excited about this record coming out.
And I just always think it's interesting. You know, you evolve. Your sound should evolve as an
act. You shouldn't. Not everybody can be ACDC or the Ramones. You know, you got to keep growing.
And it's always interesting to see what the punk bands do with that and which direction they go.
And they've really got an interesting one. And their music is compelling. And you should check
it out. And something that always makes me happy. It's embossed. Oh, it is embossed. We love. Oh,
that's a lot of embossment. Yeah. Just love the feel of it. We still have more music to get to.
Yeah, we do. The very popular reissue part of our program. We're gonna kick it off with
probably maybe the most important reissue in Houston, Texas of the year for certainly this
is the reissue of the Ghetto Boys. We Can't Be Stopped with its iconic cover. Now, this is the
relaunch for the Rap-A-Lot label. You're gonna see all their recordings come available again
on vinyl as well as a CD. And this is available nationwide, but for Houston, Texas record stores.
There's 713 copies, which were released on 713 day. And you can get this one of the area codes
for Houston. Yes, it is. We had a customer that wanted to buy the 281. The 281 version. Yeah,
yeah. Do you have that one? Yeah. 832 version. And the colored vinyl is really super cool.
And we have Astro's Burst or Astro Burst, I guess, you know. I love it. Very H-Town. Yeah,
yeah, yeah. Very Astro centric. And these are going quick. So you want to get to stores your
favorite Houston record store and pick one of those up. We all are carrying it and all have
it. So shout out to our colleagues out there that sling quality records and great to have
this one back in the racks again. Really one of the most iconic album covers from
out of Houston. Easily. Okay, let's talk Selena. This is the reissue. And I don't know why this
has not been on vinyl before. This is Selena Live 1993. And this was a huge record. This was
all of the singles from this. There were three singles from it. They all
went top five, which was huge for a Latin record back then. It was a Grammy winning record. And
this reissue features the unreleased cover of Missing My Baby. And you will notice when looking
at the cover, that the reason it may be that this has not been available is because they don't have
the album art anymore. So they recreated an alternate album art for that. I think fans agree
that they would rather have the music on vinyl. Yeah, of course. Then have a record company keep
looking for the album art. Sure. I think this is good. This is a win win, recorded 1993,
homecoming concert in her hometown. We love Selena. We do. Next up AFI. This is the 20th
anniversary of their seventh album. December Underground, a big band. They have
they this this was a number one debut on the Billboard chart. I remember when this record
came out, I was like, well, they really they really blew up. You get the big single Miss
Murder. And this is part of the R.S.D. Essentials series where you get unique pressings that are
only available in indie record stores that are manufactured to meet the orders. And then they're
gone. There'll be a regular black vinyl version of this at some point. But this is this is the
one you want to hunt for in the record store. Good to have it. Love it. And all right, guys,
now it is time to swing open the doors to the classics vault. Well, I got a good classics
vault one. You always have a good one. Yeah. Mine are highly suspect. I don't think that's the case.
This is the tourists. This is their third album, Luminous Basement. And tourists really they had
two UK top 10 hits. They were kind of bubbling under did pretty OK in the late 70s. They broke
up in 1980. And there are two members of this band, which you'll recognize from looking at the
album cover. And it's Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox, who went on to form the Eurythmics,
famously working with Connie Plank on their debut album in the garden, which was really an
experimental electronic record. And then they ended up just it was all hits after that. Sweet
dreams were made of that. And they just kept right on going. And if you're a fan of the year on this,
that is like, I believe, 1979 or 80. I recorded 79, released 80. And there's only three studio
records by them. But there's some good comps out there. If you're a fan of the Eurythmics,
it's really enjoyable and noteworthy to work backwards and hear these early recordings.
The formative years. Yeah, because they weren't necessarily the artistic
members of the band. But, you know, her voice is out front and it's so great. It's terrific. Yeah.
So great. All righty, guys, it is time to wrap things up with what's going on. Quinn and I get
to do a little catch up, sir. Tell me. Oh, what's going on is we had Jim Ward from Sparta in here
to perform in the store. I saw the video. From their brand new album. The band has been on hiatus
and they're back with them with what people think is like maybe one of their absolute best records.
Of course, you know them from at the drive in. A lot of fans here, people really, really excited
to meet them. And I hear their show went off great. And also you can swing by Cactus and buy
an autographed copy of the record. We knew that, you know, it's summertime. People are traveling.
You can't always get by the record store for the performance, but you can buy an autographed copy
after the fact. And if I can plug it, you're going to want to come out on the 30th because
Waterparks is going to be here. Houston band from the Woodlands. They're going to be here
signing copies of their brand new record, Jinx. We have a long history with this band. We hosted
their first ever in-store event when they had a little too repeat when they were on the Warped
Tour. Yeah. And so they're going to be here signing autographs and meeting fans on the 30th at 530
p.m. Fantastic. We hope to see you here for that. What does it cost to attend? That'd be zero,
Ruben. What's going on with you? So I have been covering the World Cup all month long, all 39
days. And we got to sit down at J-Bar M and watch the final and do a little celebration when Spain
finally won. It was a not the prettiest match in the world and some controversy at the end,
but it was good. The first time a band has won the World Cup, it was also that a country
has won the World Cup, that they were the European champion and the women's European
champion. I think that's right. So history being made there. I mean, it was a lot of fun.
Worked a lot of long days. It's here. The games were on TV every day. You're seeing all this
social media of all these people invading these cities and just having this wonderful time. It's
going to be interesting to see if it takes in a big way with the American thing. Yeah. I've seen
a lot of people on social media now. They're like, help me pick my Premier League team that I'm going
to follow. Really? Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. Fans are like, my wife is like, who do we watch
now? Oh, wow. And that's saying something because, you know, she's not the biggest. I mean,
you know, she loves the Astros of Texas, but she's not, you know, one of these live by. Well,
the learning curve is so huge to jump in the deep end with soccer. It is. It is. Once you get the
basic mechanics of it, you know, then you can add like what certain weird penalties are that make
no sense. You know, even stoppage time is a little bit of a mystery. But, you know, once you
kind of get into it, you know, once you acclimate, I think it's a lot of fun. And of course,
you're watching some of the greatest athletes in the world. All right, guys, here is the deal.
You tune in next time and you're going to get another brand new episode of The Drop. We'll
have a lot of more cool music for you, and we hope to see you then. See you later.
