AI GeneratedThe Detroit Lions are facing a critical shortage at the running back position as they approach the regular season opener. With Jameer Gibbs established as the primary \"bell cow,\" the team is struggling to find a reliable second option following injuries and roster changes, leading to a potential pursuit of free agent Kareem Hunt.
Well week three of the preseason is upon us with a game against Indianapolis on
Saturday and right around the corner the dress rehearsals are over because it's
going to be game one of the regular season for the Lions as the New Orleans
Saints come to town for the season opener. A lot of questions for the Lions
that they have yet to have answered including who's going to be our new
Knuckles, who's going to be the running back to share the load, take some of the
heat off our Belcal, our number one running back, probably the number one
running back in all the NFL, that being Jameer Gibbs. Well an NFL insider
reported yesterday that a major move could be imminent for the Lions as
another free agent running back has paid a visit to Allen Park and the training
camp facility for a workout. We're going to dive into that and a whole lot more
on this edition of Lions Digest. Hey everybody, yours truly Captain Lou here.

professional sports, if not in the NFL. So again welcome to the Lions Digest family.
All right, we all know who the Belcal is right? It's Jameer Gibbs, there's no
question. He's our stud, he's our number one guy, he got his extension, he's in
trench, he's locked in, but we have no knuckles. As you know David Montgomery
was traded in the offseason to the Houston Texans so that competition is
wide open. Well it was reported yesterday again by Adam Schefter that we've got a
new visitor to training camp, potentially looking for that number two
spot. How about free agent running back Kareem Hunt? What an interesting choice
for the Lions, kind of ironic with him coming to pay a visit to Allen Park for
that opportunity. Now he's he's got some he's got some tread left in the tire,
let's face it. We had 600, I think 670 yards last year in the 2025 for the
Kansas City Chiefs as he was his second stint with the Chiefs. You know he
sandwiched that in with a couple of years with the Cleveland Browns. He took
over last year as the number one back for Isaiah Pacheco, broke his fibula.
Now he's got that, that's all cleared, that's ready to go. So what does this
mean for the Lions? You know does it raise some red flags? Let's talk about it.
Isaiah Pacheco, ironically enough, was the back that the Lions signed in the
offseason. He was going to be that number two back, one to maybe take some of the
load off of Jameer Gibbs, the new Knuckles if you will. But he injured, he
has got an MCL sprain that he injured right at the beginning of training camp.
He hasn't played in any preseason games, he hasn't done anything for the Lions
yet really. So Dan Campbell claims that it's not that serious, he'll be ready to
go. But when you're bringing in a guy of the caliber of Kareem Hunt in, it kind of
worries me a little bit. That kind of tells me maybe Pacheco isn't ready. I'm
not sure, so who knows. And with some of the other news at training camp, Dave
Burkett of the Detroit Free Press reported yesterday, or on Monday rather,
that Raheem Blackshear was put on the injured reserve list. So that means he's
not going to be available. He was one of the backs that the Lions used in the
preseason game, the first two preseason games. So where do the Lions go from here?
Seriously, what are they going to do now with that roster coming into
the last game of the preseason, let alone the regular season opener? Let's take a
look at some of the other backs that the Lions have used. How about Josh Shalers?
He looked pretty good, or Jacob Salers rather, he looked pretty good in the
preseason games for the Lions, I mean for what they used out of him.
He's gotten about 90 yards. Travion Williams, he's a sleeper. I think that he
could potentially have a spot, maybe a lineup spot, if not he's a practice
squad player. But that's just it, that's the key word right there, practice squad.
Then of course you got Shion Bakke. Now Bakke, he's been with the Lions for
three years now. He's a fourth round pick out of Utah in 2024. He's played mostly
special teams for the Lions. I think he's got 14 solo tackles for the Lions in
preseason. But that's just it, that's all they've got right now. They've got no,
they've got no number two, no number two running back. So there is concern, and
there's got to be concern in Allen Park. But I ask you, what's your concern level
if you're a Lions fan? Do you think it's panic time in the Detroit running back
room? Yes? No? Or maybe I should relax. It's only preseason. Is this just another
subplot that happens every year in training camp for all these NFL
teams? What's your say on it? I'd love to see your comments. I'd love to see what you
have to say on it. So again, a little bit going on with the Lions training
camp room as far as the running backs are concerned. Now I want to go back
really to Kareem Hunt. Now again, we mentioned it. He's coming off a year where
he had 670 yards for the Chiefs in 2025. He was their number one guy over the
last half a year. But with him comes baggage. The only reason I bring this up
is because of, he's got some domestic violence issues off the field. He's been
in trouble. Now the Lions, we all saw what they had to deal with earlier in
the year with Terrion Arnold. Now they cut him once they found out the
seriousness of his accusations. Now they haven't been proven yet, but they were
also told that he was going to be on the commissioner's list, which meant he was
going to be on the exempt list. He wouldn't play probably for the first six
to eight weeks. So they did that with him. Now would they bring in somebody who's
got that off-the-field baggage like Kareem Hunt, or does that matter? Now I
know it might be a long shot that Hunt comes in and becomes one of the
running backs, one of the focus running backs for the Lions. But again it goes
back to, brings up the question, you know, is Isaiah Pacheco, is he ready to go? How
can he be trusted? He hasn't played a preseason game. He hasn't taken a snap
for the Lions. Now obviously he's not going to play this coming Saturday. A lot
of the starters aren't going to play. You're going to see, again, most of the
bubble guys may play in this game against Indianapolis. You might see a
spot starter, maybe on defense for example, they might get a play or two. But
one worries about Isaiah Pacheco and his reliability. Is it even going to be
available? And it questions why Brad Holmes picked him up to begin with. You
know, he's had injury history with Kansas City. When he's on, he's good. He was
hurt last year and that's not the first time. So again, is it panic time? And will
they go to the Kansas City connection with Kareem Hunt? Heck, they even tried
out Clyde Edwards Hilaire in the preseason. So I don't know. Is it panic
time for the Lions? I'm a little bit worried about that. We don't have a solid
number two running back in tow behind our bell cow, behind Jameer Gibbs. And we
all know in this day and age in the NFL, you need two solid running backs to get
you through an NFL season. You know, when the Lions were at their best, they had
Dave, you know, they they had David and they had Jameer Gibbs and they had David
Montgomery, Sonic and Knuckle, that duo. I don't know who's going to be your
choice for a running back, the second running back. So again, they're still
looking for them. And what about Roydell Williams? We forgot about him. They
signed him, as I mentioned, an undrafted free agent just out of college, undrafted
free agent rookie who played at Alabama and played at Florida State. He played
with Jameer Gibbs and with Jameo at Alabama, but he hasn't played anything at
the professional level yet. At best, he will be a practice squad player as well.
So, so many questions coming in to this preseason finale than the
regular season, and it was made more interesting again with Kareem Hunt
coming in for a workout for the Detroit Lions. Is a major move imminent? That's
going to be the question. All right, that's going to do it for this edition of
Lions Digest. Again, a reminder for those of you that haven't done it yet, we
invite you to subscribe, be a part of the Lions Digest family. It's free. Again,
let's prove to everybody that we are one of the most passionate fan bases in all
