Russian occupiers are clearing the remains of a Su-33 carrier-based fighter jet destroyed on September 9 at the Vytyazevo airfield in Russia's Krasnodar Krai. Satellite images were published by the OSINT project "CyberBoroshno," showing an excavator and the aircraft's wing.
They also added that the fighter was destroyed using an FP-2 medium-range attack drone.
Interestingly, the commander of the Unmanned Systems Force, Robert "Madyar" Brovdi, reported the downing of the Su-33 on September 9. "On the night of September 9, the Novorossiysk naval base lost a number of naval vessels, including missile carriers, as a result of a complex strike by a self-propelled howitzer with the participation of the SBU. In Anapa, SBU "Birds" destroyed a Su-33 carrier-based fighter, an Mi-8 helicopter, and two radar systems, namely a Kasta 2E2 and a 92N6 radar from the S-300/400 air defense system near Gelendzhik," he wrote. The Su-33 is a Soviet and Russian carrier-based fighter jet developed from the Su-27. The aircraft is designed for operation from aircraft carriers and is classified as a fourth-generation fighter. Russia uses the Su-33 as part of its naval aviation. Due to the aircraft’s specific characteristics and the limited number of such aircraft, every loss has a significant impact on Russian military capabilities. In this instance, the aircraft was not on board a ship but at a land-based facility near Anapa. It was there that it was successfully struck during a nighttime attack. The Ukrainian side stated that the Su-33 was destroyed specifically by unmanned aerial systems. This information was publicly announced by SBS Commander Robert “Madyar.” According to the same information, during the strike in Anapa, Ukrainian drones also destroyed a Russian Mi-8 helicopter. The Mi-8 is one of the most common Russian military helicopters. These helicopters are used to transport personnel and cargo, for evacuation, and—depending on the model—to carry out other military missions.
The strike on two aerial targets was part of a broader attack. Ukrainian forces simultaneously targeted military facilities in several districts of the Krasnodar Krai. According to the Ukrainian command, the target in Anapa was specifically Russian military equipment. Ukrainian forces have repeatedly struck facilities used by Russia to wage war against Ukraine. This time, the strikes targeted not only aircraft and helicopters. In Novorossiysk, Ukrainian forces attacked a naval base, and in the Gelendzhik area, they struck Russian radar systems.
New satellite images provide additional visual confirmation of the aftermath of the strike on the Su-33. They allow one to assess the condition of the aircraft after the attack and see that only scattered fragments remain of the fighter jet. At the same time, the Ukrainian side has not disclosed specific details regarding how the aircraft was hit or the circumstances of its destruction.
