Ukraine holds the front, but the war in the skies is raising concerns; another blow to the Russians

The war in Ukraine is not at a complete stalemate, although the map may give the impression that it is. Behind the front lines, a battle of technology, production capabilities, and adaptation to new conditions continues. The situation is becoming particularly challenging for Ukraine in long-range warfare, where, according to the British publication The Economist , Russia is entering the winter season with an advantage in production and technology.

The author of the publication points out that modern drones are increasingly blurring the line between the front and the rear. A so-called "ring zone" approximately 40–80 km wide is forming directly at the front lines. Military movement there has become extremely dangerous due to the constant use of FPV drones.

According to one Ukrainian military officer, Russian soldiers rarely use armored vehicles due to the threat of drone attacks. "Sometimes they travel up to 20 kilometers carrying everything on their backs, so if they hear a drone, it's easier for them to hide," he said. At the same time, drones aren't just used on the front lines. Both sides are using them to penetrate as deep into the enemy's rear as possible, attacking logistics routes. The publication describes the work of the Ukrainian unit Nemesis, whose operators hunt Russian transport and military targets in occupied territory.

The fight to isolate occupied Crimea is becoming a key focus. Robert "Magyar" Brovdy, Commander of the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces, notes that his units are attempting to weaken Russian logistics. "Crimea is the jewel in Russia's crown," he says, describing the peninsula's importance to Russian forces.

However, Russia is also adapting and developing its own long-range drone operations. As The Economist notes, rail transport has become a priority target: not only trains carrying military cargo but also civilian locomotives are being targeted.

The author cites the increasing range and scale of Russian missile attacks as an even greater problem for Ukraine. Older piston-engine Shahed missiles are gradually being replaced by faster jet-powered versions, likely powered by Chinese engines. Ukrainian ground-based air defenses are finding it increasingly difficult to intercept them. Meanwhile, Russia is ramping up production of ballistic missiles, while Ukraine has limited stockpiles of American Patriot missiles.

Ukraine is developing its own interception systems, including a project based on the Fire Point missile. However, as the author notes, creating a full-fledged missile defense system requires a complex combination of radars, data links, and guidance systems, so a quick solution is not expected.

Ultimately, The Economist characterizes Ukraine's prospects as ambiguous. On the front lines, Ukrainian troops declare their readiness to hold their positions. The publication's sources say the situation has changed under the command of the new, young commander-in-chief, Mykhailo Drapatiy.

"This is no longer a small Soviet army fighting against a large Soviet army," notes Oleksiy Goncharuk, a former prime minister who now heads the expert council of the organization Nemesis.

Ukrainian military personnel are also not afraid of another wave of mobilization in Russia. However, Ukrainian officers are concerned about the overall course of military operations throughout Ukraine.
