Edward Sheriff Curtis - Photographs.

Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868 to 1952) was an American photographer whose career was devoted largely to photographing Indigenous peoples of North America. Beginning in the late nineteenth century, he travelled extensively throughout the United States and Alaska, producing more than 40,000 photographic negatives and making thousands of ethnographic notes and sound recordings. Between 1907 and 1930 he published The North American Indian, a twenty volume work accompanied by twenty portfolios containing large format photogravures. The project documented more than eighty Indigenous nations and remains one of the largest photographic publishing projects undertaken by a single photographer.

This collection features photographs Curtis made of members of the Havasupai, Mohave, Maricopa or Piipaash, Pima, Papago, Qahatika, Tewa, Tesuque, Acoma, Navajo, Oglala, Apache and other Indigenous communities. Most of the photographs were produced between 1900 and the late 1920s during Curtis's field expeditions across the American West and Southwest. Using large format cameras and glass plate negatives, he recorded formal portraits, group photographs, architecture, landscapes, transport, domestic life and ceremonial subjects. These photographs were later reproduced as photogravures in The North American Indian as well as in exhibitions and other publications.

Curtis's photographs have become an important part of the historical record and are held in museum, archive and library collections throughout North America. They continue to be used by historians, researchers and Indigenous communities as primary source material for the study of photography, history and visual culture. The images are also widely discussed within photographic scholarship because they represent one of the most comprehensive visual surveys of Indigenous peoples produced during the early twentieth century and remain central to the study of documentary photography and the history of the photographic medium.
