During Ukraine's Operation Vivaldi in the northern Donetsk region, hundreds of drones crossed the front line, delivering ground robots 15 kilometers behind Russian lines. The small drones carried explosive charges, and some were mounted with a machine gun.
According to The Telegraph, they then, under the control of their operators, destroyed specific targets—without the use of a single infantryman. "This drone fears nothing, and unlike humans, we're not afraid of losing it. It makes war safer for our soldiers," said Darwin, commander of the 2nd Mechanized Battalion of the 3rd Army Corps.

The most difficult part was not controlling the drones, but rather providing electronic jamming so that the heavy drones could reach Russian positions.

At the same time, according to Darvin, three to four Russian drones circle over Ukrainian positions at any given time. Up to 100 such drones fly over his battalion alone per day. Some are shot down, but Russia immediately replaces them.
That's why it was crucial to ensure operational reconnaissance capabilities. According to Darwin, when the robots advanced behind enemy lines, Russian commanders found it hard to believe. In one intercepted conversation, a Russian officer dismissed the idea that a Ukrainian machine gun could have even reached his men. He thought they were being fired upon by their own people.
After the robots cleared the positions, Ukrainian infantry moved in. They took up position, dug in, and waited for artillery, drones, and other robots to clear the next section of the terrain.
