Ukraine is keeping secret information about the target hit during the first combat launch of the Ukrainian FP-7 ballistic missile, produced by Fire Point. The Kyiv Independent cites the Ukrainian president's communications adviser as saying that the Ukrainian side is not disclosing information regarding the target of the strike. "We don't report," the source said. The Wall Street Journal, citing a source, reports that the first FP-7 missile strike hit a target located in temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine. The attack took place on Thursday, October 1. The publication notes that the FP-7 ballistic missile allows Ukraine to join a small group of countries capable of producing such weapons.
The article states that the launch is yet another sign that Ukraine's defense industry is reaching a leading position in the world. "A domestically produced ballistic missile, manufactured in record time under fire, was used on the battlefield," said Fire Point CEO Irina Terekh. The FP-7 is based on the Soviet 48N6 interceptor missile used in the S-300 and S-400 air defense missile systems, but modern components and technologies are used in its production. The declared range of the Ukrainian missile is up to 250 kilometers, the maximum speed is 1,500 meters per second, and the warhead weighs 200 kilograms. Fire Point chief designer and co-founder Denis Shtilerman called the FP-7 an analogue of the American ATACMS surface-to-surface tactical ballistic missile, but noted the lower cost of the Ukrainian missile. Nazariy Barchuk, an analyst at the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation, told Kyiv Independent that "the FP-7 is designed to engage targets on the front line and in the immediate rear, such as headquarters and command posts, weapons depots, military equipment, radar stations, electronic warfare systems, air defense systems and launchers, drone launch sites, and military infrastructure, including airfields within missile range." The Ukrainian FP-7 short-range surface-to-surface ballistic missile, developed by the defense company Fire Point, was launched for the first time at targets of the Russian occupiers. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this on his X page , adding that the next goal is to launch mass production of this weapon. "Ukrainian tactical ballistics. FP-7. First combat use. Thank you for the results. Next up – production. Glory to Ukraine!" the head of state wrote. The President also released a 26-second video showing the actual moment of the FP-7 rocket launch.
The head of state did not provide any other details, including the enemy targets at which the missile was launched, or the results of the attack. It's worth noting that the manufacturer describes the FP-7 missile as a ground-launched system designed to deliver a payload of up to 150 kg and engage targets at ranges of up to 200 km. The missile was initially developed based on the Soviet S-400 and S-300, but currently shares only 20% of its design with them.
