The Ukrainian counteroffensive in the Liman sector has destroyed the northern flank of the Russian offensive, which was intended to encircle the Ukrainian-controlled part of Donetsk Oblast, Euronews reports, citing analysts' assessments.

Thus, the American Institute for the Study of War believes that Russia's strategic plan envisioned an offensive in two directions: from Liman in the north and from the Pokrovsk and Dobropillya region in the southwest. Russian forces were to unite near Barvinkove in the Kharkiv region to encircle the so-called "belt of fortresses" in Donbas—a system of Ukrainian defensive positions and logistical routes.

However, the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the Liman sector thwarted the northern part of this plan. Defense forces advanced along several sections of the front, eliminating the Russian bulge that had threatened Slovyansk from the northeast. "The defeat of the northern flank forced Russia to abandon plans to attack Slavyansk from the northeast," Euronews noted.

Maintaining control over the Liman area allowed Ukraine to secure vital supply routes and deprived Russian troops of positions necessary to pressure the northern approaches to the Ukrainian defensive belt. Now, the Russian force in the southwest will have to independently carry out a much more complex task.

The ISW emphasizes that the advance of Russian infantry, supported by drones and artillery strikes, does not provide the rapid mechanized breakthroughs necessary for the large-scale destruction of Ukrainian defenses.

"Ukraine now appears to have halted its offensive," the analysts conclude, while warning that the situation on the front remains fluid.

Russia is negotiating sanctions relief with the US in exchange for its agreement to an energy and maritime ceasefire in the war with Ukraine , according to the Kyiv Independent , citing American and Ukrainian officials familiar with the negotiations.

According to an unnamed senior Ukrainian official, Russia is now trying to inflict as much damage on Ukraine as possible in order to gain an advantage in potential negotiations.

As the publication notes, Moscow has publicly shown little interest in a mutual cessation of energy strikes. However, as two Ukrainian officials and one US official told the Kyiv Independent, the Russians have privately indicated their willingness to consider the idea. However, Russia links the possibility of such agreements to other demands, including the lifting of sanctions, the publication's sources say.
