Soldiers from the 57th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade landed Russia's latest Sokol reconnaissance drone. This enemy drone remains a rare target for Ukrainian forces. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the expensive-looking device was actually quite primitive in design.
This was reported by ArmyInform . After examining the captured drone, it was discovered that its body was made of cheap materials, its propeller was Chinese-made, and it contained a compartment for a warhead. In fact, the device turned out to be a grenade with foam wings, despite being considered the occupiers' latest development. Following this downing, the same type of drone reappeared near the 57th Brigade's area of responsibility, where Ukrainian troops continue to monitor the skies.
The Sokol belongs to a new class of Russian interceptor drones, designed specifically to counter Ukrainian drones. According to data previously reported by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, this type of aircraft can reach speeds of up to 150 km/h , operate at altitudes of up to 5,000 meters, and remain in flight for up to 150 minutes. Its payload weight reaches 0.8 kg, and to engage targets, the drone can carry a remote-detonating warhead or perform a kinetic interception—that is, shoot down a target with a direct strike. Serial production of the Sokol-I was established in Taganrog, Rostov Oblast, at the Engineering and Technical Center LLC. According to intelligence estimates, the estimated production capacity allows for up to 60,000 units per month, and the approximate cost of each drone is approximately $4,000.
The Sokol-I was unveiled around May 2026 as a specialized countermeasure against Ukrainian drones. However, the Ukrainian military is already demonstrating its ability to effectively neutralize this latest threat, despite the scale of potential production in Russia.
