It was a really frantic weekend
for people living along the coast in Long Beach.
Remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel really hammered the shoreline.
Those tides are still dangerous.
Reporter Mario Ramirez,
you're out in Long Beach right now to tell us and show us the latest.
Good morning, Mario.
Dave, good morning.
We've had several days.
This coastal event started Friday, and here we are Monday morning,
and we've had high tide every morning
and high tide every night that has caused some concern for residents,
and I'll show you why.
where along the Long Beach boardwalk, a century-old boardwalk
and just look at some of the damage here
that's been left behind over
the weekend we've got thick sand that wasn't here days ago
a lot of the windows here are boarded up
and there are evacuation orders that remain in place for the
next couple of blocks you can see all those sandbags in place
and all the wooden beams here
that were put in place as this part
of the coastline has been getting hit with wave after
wave now we have high tide which comes in around 10
o'clock this morning we've been watching the
waves really been been building here even
the residents are surprised that this this far out
from high tide the waves are already this intense
so the next couple of hours will definitely be
tense for the residents out here dozens
who evacuated we have nine red tag buildings 13
addresses where those families have been evacuated
and you can see some of them are on
the brink of collapse they're pretty seriously damaged here
a lot of them boarded up so i want
to show you the other side of the pier
because that's where a lot more activity is happening
as these waves continue to come up.
You can see those crews there. They're putting up a sand berm.
They're reinforcing a sand berm
that continuously gets washed away with these big waves. They've
been bringing in sand from other parts, other areas,
and that's a big challenge as well. They're
doing this work out here that's just getting washed away
with all these continuous days and
high tides that come in.
So we've got a beach hazard statement and a coastal flood advisory
in place through at least tomorrow.
So there's the high surf, the strong rip currents, and then
minor to moderate coastal flooding that's possible.
And I'll show you quickly just down the street
here. You can see all this thick sand that's been sent,
Dave, all the way down the street.
When we were here a few days ago,
public works crews moved in quickly. They brought in pumps
and started flooding out the street.
And we can see this morning they are on standby in case that
happens again again just a few hours away
from high tide this morning for now in Long Beach I'm
Mario Ramirez, we'll send it back to you now, no worries thank you
for that update Mario thank you it is
