During September and early October, the Defense Forces destroyed eight launch sites used by the Russians to launch ballistic missiles. Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara announced this during a meeting with journalists , according to Ukrayinska Pravda .
Three missile launchers were destroyed and five were damaged. According to him, Russia used them to launch ballistic strikes against Ukraine. Meanwhile, Ukrainian retaliatory strikes "have already forced the enemy to cancel or modify planned ballistic attacks."
Khmara noted that current and potential supplies of anti-ballistic missiles are insufficient to fully counter this threat, which he called critical. Therefore, Ukraine continues to work with its partners in this area.
"The goal is not to wait for large, long-term contracts, but to quickly find available stockpiles from partners and expedite their transfer to Ukraine. We need dozens and hundreds of missiles, not isolated deliveries," he said, adding that Ukraine will continue its asymmetric response, including the destruction of Russian launchers.
As a reminder, the destruction of one of the first Iskander missile launchers near the Ukrainian border was announced in August by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He stated that such tactics, although complex, would help Ukraine amid a shortage of interceptor missiles.
According to media reports, early warning radars belonging to Ukraine's NATO partners are being used to detect the launchers . Satellite imagery and open-source data are also being analyzed.
Ukraine is also working to weaken the Russian military industry, which is currently capable of producing up to 100 ballistic missiles per month. Specifically, on September 25, three important Russian facilities involved in missile production were struck.
Khmara said that one of the most effective ways to counter Russian jet drones is aviation. He noted that the effectiveness of aviation continues to improve thanks to pilot skill and better coordination.
"And thanks to this, our aircraft are now using fewer munitions per aerial target. We plan to further improve this figure," the minister said.
At the same time, he said , Ukraine is developing a multi-layered air defense system to counter various types of enemy targets, including jet-powered drones.
"Counteracting air threats is built on the principle of a multi-tiered system. A single type of air defense system is insufficient. Such defense consists of several layers. These include air defense systems, man-portable air defense systems, turrets, electronic warfare systems, drone interceptor crews, and small air defense systems. These assets are complemented by an aviation component, including Mirage and F-16 aircraft," the Defense Minister emphasized.
At the same time, according to Khmara, the ministry is working to provide the army with interceptor drones, aircraft and ammunition, anti-aircraft missile and artillery systems, turrets, electronic warfare systems, and more. He emphasized that it is important to plan several steps ahead and maintain a sufficient supply of the necessary weapons. "We also know what solutions Russia is developing, including jet-powered drones with a speed of 800 km/h. We are also working on finding ways to counter the next generation of threats. Manufacturers and the defense industry have been tasked with providing proposals and prototypes," Khmara emphasized.
