The trial is underway for a woman accused
of intentionally killing her boyfriend in a car crash.
Fox 35's Chris Lindsay is joining us live now.
So, Chris, this case is moving rather quickly.
Yes, it's moving incredibly fast.
Yesterday, the jury was selected.
Today, the defense team rested their case,
meaning tomorrow we could have a verdict.
A Flagler County courtroom is now the stage for a deadly
and dramatic crash investigation.
Prosecutors say Leah Mumby intentionally crashed
her car into a tree on I-95 in February of last year,
killing her boyfriend, Daniel Waterman.
The state told jurors today it all started with a heated argument over
a text message just minutes before the crash.
She was screaming that Daniel Waterman was cheating
on her and that she had seen a text from another woman.
Florida Highway Patrol investigators say Mumby accelerated
to more than 90 miles an hour
before plowing off the highway, but Waterman didn't die in that crash.
He slipped into a coma and woke up months later.
Investigators say that's when he told them just before impact,
Mumby told him, quote, I don't care what happens.
You'll get what you deserve.
Waterman tragically died from his injuries last October.
Adding to the heartbreak, Mumby was pregnant at the time of the crash,
giving birth just days after Waterman passed away.
Now on trial for vehicular homicide,
Mumby's defense team is painting a very different picture.
They argue she simply lost control of the car
and never meant to hurt anyone.
Does it make more sense that something happened within
that vehicle that she did not expect,
she did not anticipate, and she did not control?
Mumby is facing charges of reckless driving and vehicular homicide.
Tomorrow, both legal teams will deliver their closing arguments.
From there, it will be handed off to the jury.
If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in prison.
