Officer shoots gunman holding mother, child hostage

The GBI has launched an investigation after DeKalb County police shot an armed man this morning. It happened on Central Drive near North Hairston Road. Fox 5's Hernan Gutierrez is there. He's been following the story all day. Hernan, what do we know? Well, police tell us they've responded to what they're calling a domestic incident along the side of the road. This is Central Drive here. And just over my right shoulder is where it seemed like they were focusing a big portion of that investigation earlier this morning. I saw a lot of evidence Markers kind of scattered throughout this side of the road there. I got a chance to speak with some neighbors who say this was a very traumatic way to start their morning. Well, all morning long, helicopters spinning. My house, I come out the house, helicopters spinning. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man holding a woman and child at gunpoint. They tried to get the suspect to drop the gun. He refused. That's when a DeKalb County police officer shot him. Deontay Brown heard those gunshots. Five minutes after, I instantly heard sirens around, coming from a distance. And then all of a sudden, they started getting closer and closer. I was like, oh yeah, there was definitely a shooting. According to DeKalb County Police, the woman and child got away from the scene safely. Nobody else was hurt in the shooting. I know the mom and the kid are actually safe. They just walked back down the street after everything got set up and situated with them. Tuesday's police shooting happened about half a block away from the Nissan Gate Apartments. that's where brothers Jamari On Roll and Jakai Clark were shot and killed last month, Chelsea Brown says he was devastated to hear another child was put in harm's way they did what they had to do at the end of the day a baby's life is precious you gotta listen hopefully the man is okay GBI has taken over the investigation and has not released any additional details on the shooting the neighbor says he thinks the area needs more resources to stop violence before it happens. It's too much going on in our neighborhood. There's too many kids around here and it's a lot of domestic stuff going on in these neighborhoods and we got to fix the problem. I don't know if we need help over here but it's a problem. Now last we heard that suspect is still in the hospital in critical condition. Authorities have not said any more information about his identities or even if he knows the woman and the child he held at gunpoint. In DeKalb County, Hernando Fox 5 news here now.
