Minneapolis Superintendent recommends no school closures

And thanks for joining us here at six. I'm Randy Meyer and I'm Kelsey Carlson. We're following some developing news just coming into the newsroom. The Minneapolis school board's proposal to close more than a dozen schools may not be happening. So we want to get straight to Karen Scullin with the very latest on this. Karen. Yeah, the superintendent, the school superintendent started off tonight's school board meeting by saying she was recommending that no schools close at this time. Now the meeting is continuing at this point. I'm sure there's more discussion. It's unclear what happens now or if that's a done deal, but in any case, it does seem like the trajectory of this is changing because of community concerns over this transformation plan. Now, this also was a big issue today in today's city council meeting. Council members were very passionate about the issue, and they had planned to ask school board members to delay the vote on school closures. We had a heads up earlier that something was cooking with the school board. The author of the resolution Council member Patricia Vita had this to say. I've had conversations with school board members this morning talking about tonight's meeting and that they might be making a big announcement around the resolution that we're bringing forward today. So I wanted to continue moving it forward but also with the possibility that I also may be withdrawing it at a later date if things go a certain way tonight at the meeting. I'm really happy to hear that. I hadn't had that update, so I'm really happy to hear that. I wanted to co-author this because a lot of parents and families and educators in my area in South Minneapolis are really upset about this plan, particularly the closing of Field Elementary. So it sounds like they did go ahead and pass this resolution through to full council for a vote, but it sounds like it may not be necessary.
