In Coweta County, the community has rallied
to help provide financial assistance to a nurse
fighting stage four breast cancer.
And as Fox 5's Doug Evans reports tonight,
the family also faces some other health challenges.
April Fowler is an oncology nurse who's
locked in her own battle with stage four breast cancer.
And as if that wasn't enough for any young
family, there are health challenges
for her six-year-old daughter as well. Her Coweta County
Church, Providence Baptist is organizing
a fundraiser for April's family on October 17th
at Unity Baptist Church, also in Coweta County.
They'll host a big car show. At the age of 41,
it's been a year of highs and lows for April.
She just graduated and is a brand new registered nurse
on the oncology floor at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton.
Then her own diagnosis, breast cancer,
Stage four. I get tired of lying and saying I'm good,
I'm good, I'm not good. I just now to the
point I say I'm here because not everybody can say
that because I was asked if I needed to transfer
units because they thought maybe it would
be too difficult for me to work on a unit and go through
treatment myself and I told them no I
was exactly where I needed to be because I actually understand
what my patients are going through.
April's husband, Matthew, is a police officer.
They are a family of faith anchored
in the safe harbor of a small country church.
I think people realize how huge of a help that is,
especially this car show,
because it's, like I said,
the medical bills pile up and you'll get phone calls. Where's my money?
And it's like, I can't get, it feels like you can't catch a break.
Her daughter, six-year-old
Ivy has been battling a congenital heart
defects ever since she was an infant.
She's had three surgeries now,
with the last being in 2025, is when April became sick.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
A message from April, oncology nurse, cancer patient.
Any little ache or pain or anything that is off,
tell your doctor, because I try to explain
it away, like, oh, I'm too young, oh, it's fine,
it's probably this, it's probably that.
It's like, don't explain it away,
because it'll get to a point where it is too late.
Again, that fundraiser, a car show,
is scheduled at Unity Baptist Church in Coweta County for
this Saturday.
There's also a GoFundMe page.
It's called Trusting God, Supporting April.
