AI GeneratedPolice in Paulsboro, New Jersey, have charged a mother and stepfather with first-degree murder after their nine-year-old daughter was beaten to death. Despite initial claims that the child was hit by a car, forensic evidence and an autopsy revealed a history of severe abuse and blunt force trauma.
And now to a heartbreaking story in Gloucester County.
Police are investigating after they say
a nine-year-old girl was beaten to death.
Her mother and stepfather are now charged with murder.
Our Brittany Weir is live there tonight.
We've just been all over these awful stories
for the last few days here, Brittany.
Yes, Sheba, it is absolutely awful.
You said it's heartbreaking, but we do want to warn our viewers also
that the details of this story could be disturbing to hear.
We are on Swedesboro Avenue in Paulsboro,
New Jersey, where the shed here behind us,
that is where a stepfather says he found his nine-year-old daughter
after he claimed she had been hit by a car while walking her dog.
Well, investigators, they went inside that home,
and the evidence they found tells a completely different story.
Now, that girl's mother, India Miller, and that stepfather,
Sean Scott, are charged with her murder.
A caller is advising my partner that the nine-year-old may have
been hit by a car and is now in cardiac arrest.
That was a dispatch call
that Paulsboro Police received on October 13th.
Parents telling officers their nine-year-old daughter had
been hit by a car while walking the dog around 1 a.m.
The nine-year-old may or may not have been hit by a car,
has several injuries. We're really not sure what's going on.
For people who live on Swedesboro Avenue,
like Anthony Culpepper, that story is hard to believe.
It's usually really quiet, and you don't really see
that many cars coming up here, at least at that time of the night.
But investigators say they found no evidence of a crash.
Surveillance videos showed no cars in the area at the time.
But what they found inside the home changed everything.
Wet children's clothes filled with blood on them
and an upstairs bathtub,
along with blood around that tub,
on a Swiffer wet jet, and other cleaning supplies.
To me, it's just horrifying.
An autopsy revealed the 9-year-old had multiple blunt force injuries,
including broken ribs, a ruptured colon,
and her left eye was swollen shut.
Some of those injuries were in different stages of healing,
Suggesting to investigators
that the 9-year-old had been abused over time.
Prosecutors also say the girl's 4-year-old sibling told police
their father hit them in the face.
It makes me feel very sad
because I've been in this neighborhood for about 3 years
and you don't really see no type of incidents like that.
27-year-old India Miller, the girl's mother,
and 45-year-old Sean Scott, her stepfather,
stepfather are both now charged with first-degree murder.
Both appeared before a judge for the first
time on Thursday. So you were charged with two first-degree offenses.
The first is murder. The
second is accomplice liability for each to murder.
And both Scott and Miller are currently
at the Salem County Jail. They are due back in court next week.
